Dynamic Performance Analysis of Large-Scale Packed Bed Truncated Conical Thermal Energy Storage

Abstract In the present paper, a high-temperature packed bed energy storage system of volume 175,000m3 is numerically investigated. The system is a underground packed bed of truncated conical shape, which comprises of rocks as a storage medium and air as a heat transfer fluid. A one-dimensional, two-phase model is developed to simulate the transient behavior of the storage. The developed model is used to conduct a parametric study with a wide range of design parameters to investigate the change in performance during both charging and discharging operation. Results show that the model satisfactorily predicts the dynamic behavior, and the truncated conical shaped storage with a rock diameter of 3cm, insulation thickness up to 0.6m and charging-discharging rate of 553kg/s leads to lower thermal losses and higher energy efficiencies. The paper provides useful insight into the transient performance and efficiency of a large-scale packed bed energy storage system within the range of parameters investigated.

This paper describes simulation-based results of a large-scale investigation of a commercial cooling plant including a thermal energy storage system. A cooling plant with an ice-on-coil system with external melt and a reciprocating compressor operating in a large office building was analyzed under four different control strategies. Optimal control as the strategy that minimizes the total operating cost (demand and energy charges) served as a benchmark to assess the performance of the three conventional controls. However, all control strategies depend on properly selected design parameters. The storage and chiller capacities as the primary design parameters were varied over a wide range and the dependence of the system’s cost saving performance on these parameters was evaluated.

This paper presents the experimental result of a small scale packed bed of random spheres with encapsulated PCM being charged and discharged. A vapor compression refrigerator and heated room with fan heater were used to supply constant heat transfer fluid at a minimum temperature of -28°C for charging and 16°C for discharging. Even though the temperature differences were not fixed in the experiments, the performance of the thermal energy storage is depicted in the form of effectiveness values. Different results were obtained for charging and discharging the thermal storage unit. The differences are expected to come from natural convection and super cooling. The super cooling during the charging process was as high as 6°C.

Thermal energy storage has been considered as an important solution to extend the operation of a concentrated solar power plant by meeting the peak demand of power in the time period from sunset to night, or providing power during cloudy days. Discussed in this work is a thermocline thermal energy storage system with a solid filler material. For this reason, a one-dimensional single-phase model is developed and validated with experimental data to investigate the thermal behavior of such thermal energy storage. The described model is further applied to design a 100-kWhth thermocline thermal energy storage system with a packed bed of quartzite rocks and oil as the heat transfer fluid. A synthetic oil (Therminol VP-1) and a vegetable oil (rapeseed oil) are the two candidates to be used as the heat transfer fluid. Their thermal and economic performances are calculated and compared. The results show that rapeseed oil is more cost-effective than Therminol VP-1 offering a lower energy cost (€18.3/kWhth vs €92.925/kWhth for Therminol VP-1).

The intermittence and uncertainty of wind power and photovoltaic power have hindered the large-scale development of both. Therefore, it is very necessary to properly configure energy storage devices in the wind-solar complementary power grid. For the hybrid energy storage system composed of storage battery and supercapacitor, the optimization model of hybrid energy storage capacity is established with the minimum comprehensive cost as the objective function and the energy saving and charging state as the constraints. A simulated annealing artificial fish school algorithm with memory function is proposed to solve the model. The results show that the hybrid energy storage system can greatly save costs and improve system economy.

The evolving global landscape for electrical distribution and use created a need area for energy storage systems (ESS), making them among the fastest growing electrical power system products. A key element in any energy storage system is the capability to monitor, control, and optimize performance of an individual or multiple battery modules in an energy storage system and the ability to control the disconnection of the module(s) from the system in the event of abnormal conditions. This management scheme is known as “battery management system (BMS)”, which is one of the essential units in electrical equipment. BMS reacts with external events, as well with as an internal event. It is used to improve the battery performance with proper safety measures within a system. Therefore, a safe BMS is the prerequisite for operating an electrical system. This report analyzes the details of BMS for electric transportation and large-scale (stationary) energy storage. The analysis includes different aspects of BMS covering testing, component, functionalities, topology, operation, architecture, and BMS safety aspects. Additionally, current related standards and codes related to BMS are also reviewed. The report investigates BMS safety aspects, battery technology, regulation needs, and offer recommendations. It further studies current gaps in respect to the safety requirements and performance requirements of BMS by focusing mainly on the electric transportation and stationary application. The report further provides a framework for developing a new standard on BMS, especially on BMS safety and operational risk. In conclusion, four main areas of (1) BMS construction, (2) Operation Parameters, (3) BMS Integration, and (4) Installation for improvement of BMS safety and performance are identified, and detailed recommendations were provided for each area. It is recommended that a technical review of the BMS be performed for transportation electrification and large-scale (stationary) applications. A comprehensive evaluation of the components, architectures, and safety risks applicable to BMS operation is also presented.
