J. R. Amyot

Abstract A generic diagnostic framework, called GENDIAG, is described. It facilitates the development of diagnostic expert systems by providing a standard user interface and an application-independent diagnostic inference engine. It reduces the application development time by letting the knowledge engineer concentrate on domain knowledge acquisition and entry into the system.

Intelligent CAD system can be formed if integrating the expert system and mechanical CAD. Components of expert system were analyzed, including integrated databases, knowledge bases, knowledge acquisition, inference engine, explanation mechanism and human-computer interface. The model of design-evaluate-redesign was introduced and discussed. Current situation of research on design expert systems was summarized.

Abstract Decision-making processes, including the ones related to ill-structured problems, are of considerable significance in the area of construction projects. Computer-aided inference under such conditions requires the employment of specific methods and tools (non-algorithmic ones), the best recognized and successfully used in practice represented by expert systems. The knowledge indispensable for such systems to perform inference is most frequently acquired directly from experts (through a dialogue: a domain expert - a knowledge engineer) and from various source documents. Little is known, however, about the possibility of automating knowledge acquisition in this area and as a result, in practice it is scarcely ever used. It has to be noted that in numerous areas of management more and more attention is paid to the issue of acquiring knowledge from available data. What is known and successfully employed in the practice of aiding the decision-making is the different methods and tools. The paper attempts to select methods for knowledge discovery in data and presents possible ways of representing the acquired knowledge as well as sample tools (including programming ones), allowing for the use of this knowledge in the area under consideration.

The objective of this research is to develop a web-based expert system for early detection towards characters of investment of people who will invest immediately on their productive ages. The development of this application is encompassing four primary activities in developing an expert system, namely: knowledgeacquisition, knowledge representation, knowledge inferencing, and knowledge transfering. Knowledge acquisition is a process of acquisition or transfering knowledge or expertise of an expert through a knowledge engineer. Knowledge representation is a process of transfering knowledge into a computer based system. Knowledge inferencing is a reasoning process performed by an expert system to draw a conclusion or a final result. The reasoning process applies a forward-chaining method. Knowledge transfering is a process of transfering knowledge from an expert system to a user (non-expert one) through a user interface of the expert system. This expert system has been tested to about 300 users. This simple system generally runs quite well although there are still some weakness to refine in the further research.

AbstractExpert systems are being built despite the widely acknowledged problem of acquiring knowledge from experts. This study attempts to understand how knowledge acquisition is conducted in practice by investigating three expert system development projects. A CASE research methodology is adopted, and data is collected through unobtrusive observation, from taped protocols of knowledge acquisition sessions, retrospective interviews with the participants involved, and deliverables produced. The variables examined include the problem domain, the domain expert, the knowledge engineer, the knowledge acquisition process, the expert system construction process, potential users, organizational setting, and the expert system itself. The knowledge acquisition processes for three expert systems in the domains of law of negligence, telephone line fault diagnosis, and wastewater treatment have been examined. By juxtaposing the observations drawn with findings from the relevant literature, the study makes prescriptive suggestions on considerations and techniques for future acquisition efforts, and provides data for hypothesis generation in further research.

This paper describes the design and development of a component-based object oriented Expert System's Integrated Development Environment (ExSIDE).  It is integrated with (i) a user-friendly manual and automated knowledge acquisition and management tool (ExSIDE_KAMT);(ii) an independent and customizable runtime module (ExSIDE_RTM); (iii) an object-oriented in-process Component Object Model (COM)-based inference engine (ExSIDE_IE); (iv) an object-oriented out-of-process COM-based inference engine (ExSIDE_IESvr); (v) and a PHP based inference engine (ExSIDE_PHP). ExSIDE_RTM can function independently as an Expert System Shell (ESS) and helps user to develop Expert Systems rapidly.  ExSIDE_IE and ExSIDE_IES can be integrated with COM-supporting general purpose and scientific application development tools such as variants of C/C++/C#, BASIC (Visual BASIC®, REALbasic®), Java, MATLAB®, LabVIEW®, and Mathematica® to develop more advanced Expert Systems. Finally, ExSIDE_IE and ExSIDE_PHP can be used with Active Server Pages (ASP) and PHP technologies to generate web based Expert Systems. The unique framework of the ExSIDE enables rapid development of Expert Systems' on PC and web for technical and non-technical users. The overall system was developed successfully, and its usability was demonstrated via five unique Expert Systems case studies discussed in this paper.
