Detection of Propagating Cracks in Rotors Using Neural Networks

This paper presents the application of neural networks for rotor cracks detection. The basic working principles of neural networks are presented. Experimental vibration signals of rotors with and without a propagating crack were used to train the Multi-layer Feed-forward Neural Networks using back-propagation algorithm. The trained neural networks were tested with other set of vibration data. A simple two-layer feed-forward neural network with two neurons in the input layer and one neuron in the output layer trained with the signals of a cracked rotor and a normal rotor without a crack was found to be satisfactory in detecting a propagating crack. Trained three-layer networks were able to detect both the propagating and non-propagating cracks. The FFT of the vibration signals showing variation in amplitude of the harmonics as time progresses are also presented for comparison.

In this paper we describe several different training algorithms for feed forward neural networks(FFNN). In all of these algorithms we use the gradient of the performance function, energy function, to determine how to adjust the weights such that the performance function is minimized, where the back propagation algorithm has been used to increase the speed of training. The above algorithms have a variety of different computation and thus different type of form of search direction and storage requirements, however non of the above algorithms has a global properties which suited to all problems.

AbstractA feed-forward neural network which can account for nonlinear relationship was used to model total solar irradiance (TSI). A single layer feed-forward neural network with Levenberg-marquardt back-propagation algorithm have been implemented for modeling daily total solar irradiance from daily photometric sunspot index, and core-to-wing ratio of Mg II index data. In order to obtain the optimum neural network for TSI modeling, the root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) have been taken into account. The modeled and measured TSI have the correlation coefficient of about R=0.97. The neural networks (NNs) model output indicates that reconstructed TSI from solar proxies (photometric sunspot index and Mg II) can explain 94% of the variance of TSI. This modeled TSI using NNs further strengthens the view that surface magnetism indeed plays a dominant role in modulating solar irradiance.

The goal of this chapter is to enable a nonholonomic mobile robot to track a specified trajectory with minimum tracking error. Towards that end, an adaptive P controller is designed whose gain parameters are tuned by using two feed-forward neural networks. Back-propagation algorithm is chosen for online learning process and posture-tracking errors are considered as error values for adjusting weights of neural networks. The tracking performance of the controller is illustrated for different trajectories with computer simulation using Matlab/Simulink. In addition, open-loop response of an experimental mobile robot is investigated for these different trajectories. Finally, the performance of the proposed controller is compared to a standard PID controller. The simulation results show that “adaptive P controller using neural networks” has superior tracking performance at adapting large disturbances for the mobile robot.

In this chapter, a classifier technique that is based on a missing data estimation framework that uses autoassociative multi-layer perceptron neural networks and genetic algorithms is proposed. The proposed method is tested on a set of demographic properties of individuals obtained from the South African antenatal survey and compared to conventional feed-forward neural networks. The missing data approach based on the autoassociative network model proposed gives an accuracy of 92%, when compared to the accuracy of 84% obtained from the conventional feed-forward neural network models. The area under the receiver operating characteristics curve for the proposed autoassociative network model is 0.86 compared to 0.80 for the conventional feed-forward neural network model. The autoassociative network model proposed in this chapter, therefore, outperforms the conventional feed-forward neural network models and is an improved classifier. The reasons for this are: (1) the propagation of errors in the autoassociative network model is more distributed while for a conventional feed-forward network is more concentrated; and (2) there is no causality between the demographic properties and the HIV and, therefore, the HIV status does change the demographic properties and vice versa. Therefore, it is better to treat the problem as a missing data problem rather than a feed-forward problem.

Multilayer feed-forward neural networks are widely used based on minimization of an error function. Back propagation (BP) is a famous training method used in the multilayer networks but it often suffers from the drawback of slow convergence. To make the learning faster, we propose 'Fusion of Activation Functions' (FAF) in which different conventional activation functions (AFs) are combined to compute final activation. This has not been studied extensively yet. One of the sub goals of the paper is to check the role of linear AFs in combination. We investigate whether FAF can enable the learning to be faster. Validity of the proposed method is examined by performing simulations on challenging nine real benchmark classification and time series prediction problems. The FAF has been applied to 2-bit, 3-bit and 4-bit parity, the breast cancer, Diabetes, Heart disease, Iris, wine, Glass and Soybean classification problems. The algorithm is also tested with Mackey-Glass chaotic time series prediction problem. The algorithm is shown to work better than other AFs used independently in BP such as sigmoid (SIG), arctangent (ATAN), logarithmic (LOG).

It is well known that feed-forward neural networks can be used for approximation to functions based on an appropriate activation function. In this paper, employing a new sigmoidal function with a parameter for an activation function, we consider a constructive feed-forward neural network approximation on a closed interval. The developed approximation method takes a simple form of a superposition of the parametric sigmoidal function. It is shown that the proposed method is very effective in approximation of discontinuous functions as well as continuous ones. For some examples, the availability of the presented method is demonstrated by comparing its numerical results with those of an existing neural network approximation method. Furthermore, the efficiency of the method in extended application to the multivariate function is also illustrated.
