Glasses reflective in the spectral range of long-wave infrared radiation operate as heat mirrors. These glasses have found wide applications in architecture. Special thin film coatings on glass panes reflect long wave infrared radiation back to building interiors. The reflective thin films limit absorption of infrared radiation within the glass pane and reduce radiation heat losses of glazings. Heat losses of windows could be significantly limited with the coated glasses which are called low-emissivity glazings. The study of materials convenient for infrared reflective coatings, the optimal composition of thin films and their thicknesses is the main topic of the presented paper. The study is based on measurements of spectral characteristics of selected glasses and computer simulations of the thin film composition for applications of window infrared reflective coatings.

ABSTRACTPalladium germanide thin films were investigated for infrared plasmonic applications. Palladium thin films were deposited onto amorphous germanium thin films and subsequently annealed at a range of temperatures. X-ray diffraction was used to identify stoichiometry, and Scanning Electron Micrographs, along with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) was used to characterize composition and film quality. Resistivity was also measured for analysis. Complex permittivity spectra were measured from 0.3 to 15 µm using IR ellipsometry. From this, surface plasmon polariton (SPP) characteristics such as propagation length and mode confinement were calculated and used to determine appropriate spectral windows for plasmonic applications with respect to film characteristics. Films were evaluated for use with on-chip plasmonic components.

This study describes the development of a prototype bi-spectral microbolometer sensor system designed explicitly for radiometric measurement and characterization of wildfire mid- and long-wave infrared radiances. The system is tested experimentally over moderate-scale experimental burns coincident with FLIR reference imagery. Statistical comparison of the fire radiative power (FRP; W) retrievals suggest that this novel system is highly reliable for use in collecting radiometric measurements of biomass burning. As such, this study provides clear experimental evidence that mid-wave infrared microbolometers are capable of collecting FRP measurements. Furthermore, given the low resource nature of this detector type, it presents a suitable option for monitoring wildfire behaviour from low resource platforms such as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or nanosats.
