SummaryA simple and fast method for the quantitative determination of protein C activity in plasma is here described. The first step consists in the conversion of protein C in the test sample into activated protein C by means of an activator isolated from Southern Copperhead venom. Subsequently, the degradation of factor Va, in presence of protein C-deficient plasma, is measured by the prolongation of the prothrombin time which is proportional to the amount of protein C in the sample. The dose-response curve showed a linear relationship from 6 to 150% protein C activity and the inter- and intra-assay reproducibility was 3.5% and 5.6% respectively. In normal subjects, a mean of protein C level of 98 ± 15% of normal pooled plasma was found. Comparison with the anticoagulant assay in samples of patients with oral anticoagulant, liver cirrhosis, disseminated intravascular coagulation and severe preeclampsia revealed an excellent correlation (r = 0.94, p <0.001). Also, a similar correlation (r = 0.93, p <0.001) existed between amidolytic assay and the method here proposed for all the samples studied without including the oral anticoagulant group. These results allowed us to infer that this method evaluates the ability of protein C to interact with protein S, phospholipids, calcium ions and factor Va.

Objectives: Artificial insemination with sperm preparation and inseminate to the uterus is a common method of infertility treatment. Currently two methods used for sperm washing is “swim-up” and “gradient”. Materials and methods:cross-sectional description in 166 cycles of artificial insemination in Hue University Hospital from April, 2012 to March, 2013 in order to compare effectiveness between “swim-up” and “gradient” methods. Samples were collected randomly into two methods. Results:Results of sperm preparation in both methods are equivalent in terms of the following parameters total sperm count, total number of progressive sperm, total good morphology sperm. However, “gradient” method results in higher number of progressive sperm in case with slow motility (38.3% vs. 26.1%) or abnormal morphology (34.9% vs. 19.7 %) compared with “swim-up” method. Pregnancy rates after artificial insemination were similar between two preparation methods. Conclusion:In case of slow motility sperm and abnormal morphology, “gradient” method should be used to increase the number of progressive sperms. Pregnancy outcome depends on many factors other than preparation methods. Key words: Artificial insemination, sperm preparation, infertility treatment

The aim of this work was the development and validation of a fast analytical method to determine the residual solvents content in radiopharmaceuticals such as: 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (18F-FDG), 18F-Fluoroestradiol (18F-FES), 18F-Fluorothymidine (18F-FLT),18F-Fluoromisonidazole (18F-FMISO). Radiopharmaceuticals are radioactive preparations for medical purposes used in nuclear medicine as tracers in diagnostic imaging and treatment of certain diseases. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is a medical imaging technique that consists in introducing into the body of a small amount of a biologically active chemical compound labelled with a short lived positron-emitting radioisotope (18F, 11C, 68Ga). Residual solvents are critical impurities in radiopharmaceuticals that can affect labelling, stability and physicochemical properties of drugs. Therefore, the determination of these solvents is essential for quality control of radiopharmaceuticals. Validation of the control method for residual solvents by gas chromatography is referred by the European Pharmacopoeia using a special injection technique (head space). The parameters of the method, which comply with International Conference on Harmonization guidelines, are: accuracy, precision, linearity, limit of detection, limit of quantification and robustness. The proposed method (direct gas chromatography injection) proved to be linear, precise, accurate and robust. Good linearity was achieved for all the solvents and correlation coefficients (R2) for each residual solvent were found more than 0.99.

The paper presents a generalized mathematical model and numerical investigation of the problem of acoustic scattering from a single sound-permeable sphere during the passage of two types of waves - spherical from a monopole radiation source and a plane one. In solving the Helmholtz equation, a numerical technique based on the fast method of multipoles is used, which allows achieving high accuracy of the results obtained at the lowest cost of computer time. The calculations are compared with known experimental data and a good agreement is obtained. The formulas for calculating the main characteristic of the scattering field (the total scattering cross section) for a sound-permeable sphere are generalized. The effect on this characteristic of the physical parameters of media outside and inside the sphere, such as the density and speed of sound, is shown. A numerical parametric analysis of the pressure distribution around a single sound-permeable sphere for different values of the wave radius, density, and speed of sound of the outer and inner medium of the sphere is carried out. The obtained results will later be used for test verification calculations for the numerical solution of the generalized problem of acoustic scattering of a set of sound-permeable spheres (coaxial or arbitrarily located in space).

Images captured in severe atmospheric catastrophe especially in fog critically degrade the quality of an image and thereby reduces the visibility of an image which in turn affects several computer vision applications like visual surveillance detection, intelligent vehicles, remote sensing, etc. Thus acquiring clear vision is the prime requirement of any image. In the last few years, many approaches have been made towards solving this problem. In this article, a comparative analysis has been made on different existing image defogging algorithms and then a technique has been proposed for image defogging based on dark channel prior strategy. Experimental results show that the proposed method shows efficient results by significantly improving the visual effects of images in foggy weather. Also computational time of the existing techniques are much higher which has been overcame in this paper by using the proposed method. Qualitative assessment evaluation is performed on both benchmark and real time data sets for determining theefficacy of the technique used. Finally, the whole work is concluded with its relative advantages and shortcomings.
