This review provides a comprehensive compilation, from a digital image processing point of view of the most important techniques currently developed to characterize and quantify the vibration behaviour of the vocal folds, along with a detailed description of the laryngeal image modalities currently used in the clinic. The review presents an overview of the most significant glottal-gap segmentation and facilitative playbacks techniques used in the literature for the mentioned purpose, and shows the drawbacks and challenges that still remain unsolved to develop robust vocal folds vibration function analysis tools based on digital image processing.

The detection of damage in early stage of fatigue is important for a reliable evaluation of gear life and strength. From this point of view, the variation of strain distribution in a tooth due to cyclic load contains useful information because the fatigue crack will initiate as a result of the accumulation of plastic strain. Meanwhile, digital image equipments are widely used in our life and the performance is in progress. We took digital pictures of cyclic loaded tooth by the digital camera and compared with the picture of no load to find displacement. The strain distribution of tooth is calculated by the correlation method using those pictures. The initiation of a micro crack is observed by the method. It is also confirmed by the detection of acoustic emission wave with higher energy. The variation of stress-strain diagram in fatigue process is presented, and this illustrates the increase of strain in the final stage of fatigue.

We study the perceptual problem related to image quantization from an optimization point of view, using different metrics on the color space. A consequence of the results presented is that quantization using histogram equalization provides optimal perceptual results. This fact is well known and widely used but, to our knowledge, a proof has never appeared on the literature of image processing.

AbstractConnected operators based on hierarchical image models have been increasingly considered for the design of efficient image segmentation and filtering tools in various application fields. Among hierarchical image models, component-trees represent the structure of grey-level images by considering their nested binary level-sets obtained from successive thresholds. Recently, a new notion of component-graph was introduced to extend the component-tree to any grey-level or multivalued images. The notion of shaping was also introduced as a way to improve the anti-extensive filtering by considering a two-layer component-tree for grey-level image processing. In this article, we study how component-graphs (that extend the component-tree from a spectral point of view) and shapings (that extend the component-tree from a conceptual point of view) can be associated for the effective processing of multivalued images. We provide structural and algorithmic developments. Although the contributions of this article are theoretical and methodological, we also provide two illustration examples that qualitatively emphasize the potential use and usefulness of the proposed paradigms for image analysis purposes.

As the onshore wind resource is running shorter, wind power promoters are paying attention to the offshore resources. As in most cases there is no load offshore, wind power must be transmitted to the main land. To do so, two options are available: HVAC and HVDC transmission systems. In this paper, the two options are analysed from a power flow point of view. The influence in the voltage regulation of the onshore connection busbar is investigated in a 57 bus test power system. The simulation results obtained for each one of the above mentioned transmission system configurations allow the conclusion that HVAC solution is limited by the distance to shore and by the wind transmitted power. HVDC options do not show these limitations, but are more expensive and more delicate to deal with, because there is a lack of operational experience, so far.
