Pre- and Post-season Dietary Intake, Body Composition, and Performance Indices of NCAA Division I Female Soccer Players

Little published data describe the dietary and physiological profiles of intercollegiate female soccer players; therefore, the purpose of this investigation was to report baseline dietary data, anthropometrics, and performance indices of soccer women during rigorous pre-season training (2 sessions/day) and then during the post-competitive season. Members of a NCAA Division I women’s soccer squad completed 3-day diet records, anthropometrics, and physical tests, including VO2peak. Average body mass was 62 kg with 16% body fat, and no significant pre to post differences were observed. Total energy, carbohydrate (CHO), protein, and fat intakes were significantly greater during the pre-sea-son. Pre-season energy intake met the DRI for females with an “active” lifestyle (37 kcal/kg). While CHO intake failed to meet minimum recommendations to promote glycogen repletion (7–10 g/kg), protein and fat intakes were above minimum recommendations. Pre- and post-season intakes of several micronu-trients were marginal (<75% of the DRI) including vitamin E, folate, copper, and magnesium. VO2peak significantly improved from pre- to post-season (42 and 50 ml/kg/min). In this study female soccer players appeared to meet caloric needs during periods of training but failed to meet minimum CHO and micronu-trient recommendations. Foods higher in protein and fat displaced more CHOrich and nutrient-dense foods within athletes’ energy requirements and satiety limits.

Purpose:During the competitive soccer season, women’s intercollegiate matches are typically played on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. The efficacy of a 42-h recovery period is not well understood. This investigation was conducted to determine performance differences between Friday and Sunday matches during a competitive season.Methods:Ten NCAA Division I female soccer players (20.5 ± 1.0 y, 166.6 ± 5.1 cm, 61.1 ± 5.8 kg) were monitored with 10-Hz GPS devices across 8 weekends with matches played on Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons. The players were outside backs, midfielders, and forwards. All players had to participate in a minimum of 45 min/match to be included in the study. Average minutes played, total distance covered, total distance of high-intensity running (HIR) (defined as running at a velocity equal to or exceeding 3.61 m/s for longer than 1 s), the number of HIR efforts, and the number of sprints were calculated for each match. Data for Friday vs Sunday matches were averaged and then compared using dependent t tests.Results:No differences were seen in minutes played, distance rate, or number of sprints between Friday and Sunday matches. A significant (P = .017) decrease in rate of HIR between Friday (25.37 ± 7.22 m/min) and Sunday matches (22.90 ± 5.70 m/min) was seen. In addition, there was a trend toward a difference (P = .073) in the number of efforts of HIR between Friday (138.41 ± 36.43) and Sunday (126.92 ± 31.31).Conclusions:NCAA Division I female soccer players cover less distance of HIR in games played less than 48 h after another game. This could be due to various factors such as dehydration, glycogen depletion, or muscle damage.

The management of playing time in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) soccer athletes may be a key factor affecting running performance during competition. This study compared playing time and running performance between regular-season and postseason competitions during a competitive women’s soccer season. Nine NCAA Division I women soccer players (age, 21.3 ± 0.9 years; height, 170.3 ± 5.7 cm; body mass, 64.0 ± 5.8 kg) were tracked using portable GPS devices across 21 games during a competitive season (regular season (n = 17); postseason (n = 4)). Movements on the field were divided into operationally distinct thresholds defined as standing/transient motion, walking, jogging, low-speed running, moderate-speed running, high-speed running, sprinting, low-intensity running, and high-intensity running. A significant increase in minutes played (+17%, p = 0.010) was observed at postseason compared with the regular season. Concomitant increases in time spent engaged in low-intensity running (LIR: +18%, p = 0.011), standing/transient motion (+35%, p = 0.004), walking (+17%, p = 0.022), distance covered while walking (+14%, p = 0.036), and at low intensity (+11%, p = 0.048) were observed. Performance comparisons between the first and second half within games revealed a significant decrease (p ≤ 0.05) in high-speed and high-intensity runs during the second half of the postseason compared with the regular season. Changes in minutes played correlated significantly with changes in absolute time spent engaged in LIR (r = 0.999, p < 0.001), standing/transient motion (r = 0.791, p = 0.011), walking (r = 0.975, p = 0.001), jogging (r = 0.733, p = 0.025), distance covered while walking (r = 0.898, p < 0.001) and low-intensity activity (r = 0.945, p < 0.001). Negative correlations were observed between minutes played and absolute time sprinting (r = −0.698, p = 0.037) and distance covered sprinting (r = −0.689, p = 0.040). Results indicate that additional minutes played during the postseason were primarily performed at lower intensity thresholds, suggesting running performance during postseason competitions may be compromised with greater playing time in intercollegiate women’s soccer.

Background: Chronic strain and/or tendinopathy of the adductor longus tendon can be a cause of long-standing groin pain in the elite athlete, resulting in significant time lost from competition. Accurate diagnosis and treatment can expedite return to play. Purpose/Hypothesis: To evaluate return to sport and performance in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I football players and National Football League (NFL) players following adductor longus release with or without sports hernia repair. We hypothesized that adductor release will be an effective method of treatment for recalcitrant groin/adductor pain in these athletes. Study Design: Case series; Level of evidence, 4. Methods: A cohort study was performed of all NFL players and NCAA Division I college athletes who had undergone an adductor longus tendon release with or without sports hernia repair by 1 of 2 fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons between May 1999 and January 2013. All patients reported groin pain below the inguinal ligament and localized to their adductor longus. Symptoms lasted longer than 10 weeks and limited their ability to effectively perform during sport, as assessed by their coach and self-assessment. Questionnaires were given to all 26 patients to assess long-term surgical outcomes. A subgroup analysis was performed for NFL players, in which “performance scores” were calculated according to individual player statistics while playing. Scores obtained before the diagnosis of chronic adductor longus tendinopathy or strain were compared with those after surgery. Patients with prior abdominal or pelvic surgery, radiographic evidence of degenerative joint disease of the hip, labral tears or femoral acetabular impingement, prostatic or urinary tract disease, or nerve entrapment of the ilioinguinal, genitofemoral, or lateral femoral cutaneous nerves were excluded from the study. Results: A total of 32 athletes underwent an adductor longus tenotomy during the study period. Of these patients, 28 were college- or professional-level athletes who underwent an adductor longus tenotomy, with a mean ± SD follow-up time of 6.2 ± 4.2 years (range, 12-178 months). Of the 32 patients, 20 had a concomitant sports hernia repair in addition to an adductor longus tenotomy. Thirty-one patients (97%) were able to return to their previous sport, and 30 (94%) were able to return at their previous level of play. Thirty patients (94%) reported that they were satisfied with their decision to have surgery. No player complained of weakness or a decrease in running speed or power. Mean return to play was 12 weeks from date of surgery. In the subgroup analysis of 16 NFL players, there were no statistically significant differences for the pre- versus postoperative comparisons of the athlete performance scores ( P = .74) and the percentage of the games started versus played ( P = .46). After separation of players who had a concomitant hernia repair from players who did not, there was no statistically significant difference in performance scores or percentages of games started. Conclusion: In this study of elite athletes, adductor longus tenotomy with or without a concomitant sports hernia repair provided overall acceptable and excellent results. Athletes were able to return to their previous level of athletic competition and performance with consistent relief of groin pain. Return to play in an NFL game averaged 12 weeks following surgery.
