Peak Oxygen Uptake and Physical Activity in 11- to 16-Year-Olds

The present study examined the relationship between peak V̇O2 and habitual physical activity in 11- to 16-year-old students. The peak V̇O2 of 111 girls and 85 boys was determined using treadmill or cycle ergometry. Habitual physical activity was estimated from minute-by-minute heart rate monitoring over three 12-hr periods during normal school days. Over half of the girls and one third of the boys failed to sustain a single 10-min period with their heart rate at or above 140 bpm. Only one boy sustained a daily 20-minute period with a heart rate at or above 160 bpm. During Saturday monitoring over 90% of the girls and 75% of the boys failed to sustain a single 10-min period with their heart rate at or above 140 bpm, and only one girl and four boys sustained a 20-min period with their heart rate at or above 160 bpm. No significant relationship was detected between peak V̇O2 and heart rate indicators of habitual physical activity. This study suggests that few children have periods of physical activity of sufficient intensity and duration to stress the cardiopulmonary system.

This study aimed to identify undertaken activities during Physical Education (PE) school classes, such as their content and intensity, and investigate the relationship between PE school classes and the level of physical activity of the students. Fifty school adolescents averagely aging 14.3 years, 1.63m, height and 57.4kg body mass were evaluated. Intensity of PE classes was measured by heart rate monitoring. A PE class content observation instrument was utilized in order to evaluate the sessions. Additionally, IPAQ was used to assess the level of physical activity of the participants. 20% of the students were found to be overweight considering their age. It was noticed that 78% underwent from moderate to high intensity sports activity throughout the classes, without signifi cant gender differences. 96% of the studied subjects were classifi ed as active or very active. Therefore, most of the analyzed adolescents performed satisfactory physical activity, ensuring a high level of physical activity.

In this article, we report on a multimethod qualitative study designed to explore the emotional experiences of students in the classroom setting. The purpose of the study was threefold: (1) to explore the correspondence among nonverbal expressions, subjective feelings, and physiological reactivity (heart rate changes) of students’ emotions in the classroom; (2) to examine the relationship between students’ emotions and their competence and value appraisals; and (3) to determine whether task difficulty matters in emotional experiences. We used multiple methods (nonverbal coding scheme, video stimulated recall interview, and heart rate monitoring) to acquire data on emotional experiences of six grade 7 students. Concurrent correspondence analyses of the emotional indices revealed that coherence between emotional response systems, although apparent, is not conclusive. The relationship between appraisals and emotions was evident, but the effect of task difficulty appears to be minimal.

The present study examined the relationship between maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max) and daily physical activity in a group of 7- to 12-year-old boys. V̇O2max was assessed through the incremental treadmill test using an open circuit system. Physical activity level was obtained from heart rate telemetry outside of school time for 8 hrs during weekdays and during 40 min of physical education classes. The findings indicated that the absolute value of V̇O2max increased with age, while relative to body weight it remained almost the same across age, with a mean of 48.4 ml · kg−1 · min−1. Moreover, heart rate telemetry showed that the boys spent a limited amount of time on activities that raise the heart rate to a level above 160 bpm (an average of 1.9%). In addition, V̇O2max was found to be significantly related to the percentage of time spent at activity levels at or above a heart rate of 140 bpm, but not with activity levels at or above a heart rate of 160 bpm.

In order to assess possible influences of socioeconomic status and gender on habitual physical activity (HPA) of prepubertal French children, daily heart rate was 24-hr-monitored in 65 normal subjects for 2 days in the same school week. HPA was evaluated as the mean daily time spent at heart rates greater than 140 bpm (tFC > 140), 160 bpm (tFC > 160), 50% (tFC > 50%), and 70% (tFC > 70%) of the heart rate reserve. An effect of socioeconomic status (determined by questionnaire) was found in boys, with HPA being greater in the underprivileged ones (tFC > 140: 51.8 ± 30.1 vs 33.0 ± 14.1 min, p < .05; tFC > 160: 22.7 ± 16.6 vs 11.1 ± 7.4 min, p < .05; tFC > 50%: 61.4 ± 33.5 vs 46.5 ± 17.1 min, p < .06; tFC > 70%: 20.1 ± 15.2 vs 10.6 ± 7.1, p < .05). Boys were more active than girls, but only in the underprivileged group (tFC > 140: 51.8 ± 30.1 vs 32.8 ± 26.0 min, tFC > 160: 22.7 ± 16.6 vs 9.9 ± 8.2 min, p < .05; tFC > 50%: 61.4 ± 33.5 vs 37.4 ± 23.8 min, p < .05; tFC > 70%: 20.1 ± 15.2 vs 8.1 ± 6.3, p < .05). Background:The International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) is commonly used in surveys, but reliability and validity has not been established in the Danish population.Methods:Among participants in the Danish Health Examination survey 2007–2008, 142 healthy participants (45% men) wore a unit that combined accelerometry and heart rate monitoring (Acc+HR) for 7 consecutive days and then completed the IPAQ. Background data were obtained from the survey. Physical activity energy expenditure (PAEE) and time in moderate, vigorous, and sedentary intensity levels were derived from the IPAQ and compared with estimates from Acc+HR using Spearman’s correlation coefficients and Bland-Altman plots. Repeatability of the IPAQ was also assessed.Results:PAEE from the 2 methods was significantly positively correlated (0.29 and 0.49; P = 0.02 and P < 0.001; for women and men, respectively). Men significantly overestimated PAEE by IPAQ (56.2 vs 45.3 kJ/kg/day, IPAQ: Acc+HR, P < .01), while the difference was nonsignificant for women (40.8 vs 44.4 kJ/kg/day). Bland-Altman plots showed that the IPAQ overestimated PAEE, moderate, and vigorous activity without systematic error. Reliability of the IPAQ was moderate to high for all domains and intensities (total PAEE intraclass correlation coefficient = 0.58).Conclusions:This Danish Internet-based version of the long IPAQ had modest validity and reliability when assessing PAEE at population level.
