Electrophoretic separations followed by revelations of esterase, aminopeptidase, and phosphatase activities were performed on a population of Pleurotus eryngii (Tournus: Saône valley, France). Electrophoresis on controlled dicaryotic mycelia and their haploid components was used as a convenient means to study the genetic determination of some esterase and phosphatase isoenzymes. The electrophoretic patterns obtained from original isolates (wild dicaryons) show little variability, but internal variations are revealed. These variations allowed for a characterization of four genotypically different individual groups. This analytical method seems to give some interesting data, useful for taxonomic studies.

Proteins extracted from reduced and carboxymethylated feather keratins (SCM-keratins) have been studied by Harrap and Woods (1964a, 1964b, 1967). They have demonstrated the presence of electrophoretic heterogeneity amongst the proteins and have obtained a molecular weight of approximately 11,000 in agreement with earlier work of Woodin (1954). There was no indication of marked heterogeneity with respect to size. Using acid hydrolysis and determination of acetic acid produced they found an acetyl content of 1 30 molesj104 g in the rachis off owl feathers. These were thought to be attached to primary amino groups since there were no O-acetyl groups. In the present paper the isolation and characterization of the predominant, and probably sole, amino-terminal tripeptide from goose feather calamus is described. Goose feather calamus was chosen because its extracted proteins had one of the simplest electrophoretic patterns of proteins from the feathers of a number of species (Harrap and Woods 1967).

Abstract The heterodimeric complex glycoprotein (GP)IIb-IIIa, the fibrinogen receptor of platelets, carries numerous alloantigen systems. These polymorphisms are responsible for the immune response after transfusion or during pregnancy. In the latter case, the mother develops an antibody against an epitope present on fetal platelets, and this results in platelet destruction in the fetus. In this report, we describe the molecular characterization of a new alloantigen (Laa) on GPIIIa responsible for neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia (NAIT). Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)–singlestrand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) and DNA sequencing, we found a point mutation (G to A) in a heterozygous state on the GPIIIa gene leading to amino acid substitution Arg to Gln at position 62 of the mature protein. Transient expression of GPIIb-IIIa complexes in Cos-7 cells using wild-type or mutated GPIIIa cDNA allowed us to demonstrate that this mutation was responsible for expression of the Laa epitope.

Corrosion of reinforcement is an important durability concern for the structures exposed to coastal regions. Since corrosion of reinforcement involves long periods of time, impressed current technique is usually used to accelerate the corrosion of reinforcement in laboratories. Characterization of impressed current technique was the main focus of this research, which involved determination of optimum chloride content and minimum immersion time of specimens for which the application of Faraday’s law could be efficient. To obtain optimum chloride content, the electrolytes in the corrosion cell were prepared similar to that of concrete pore solutions. Concrete prisms of 200 mm by 200 mm by 300 mm were used to determine the minimum immersion time for saturation. It was found that the optimum chloride content was 35 gm/L and the minimum immersion time for saturation was 140 hours. Accounting the results, a modified expression based on Faraday’s law was proposed to calculate weight loss due to corrosion. Journal of Engineering Science 11(1), 2020, 93-99

Eternal return is the paradox that accounts for the interplay between difference and repetition, a dynamic at the heart of Deleuze's philosophy, and Blanchot's approach to this paradox, even and especially through what it elides, further illuminates it. Deleuze draws on Blanchot's characterisations of difference, forgetting, and the unlivable to depict the ‘sense’ produced via eternal return, which, for Blanchot, is where repetition implicates or ‘carries’ pure difference. However, for Deleuze, difference and the unlivable are also developed by the living repetition or ‘contraction’ of habit, which results in his distinctive characterization of ‘force’, ‘levity’, and sense in eternal return.

The photoluminescence of carbon quantum dots synthesized from natural honey and mixtures of honey and sugar has been studied. An increase in the sugar content leads to a decrease in the photoluminescence intensity without changing the shape of the luminescence spectrum of these quantum dots aqueous solutions, which is associated with a decrease in the yield of their synthesis in the sugar presence. The discovered effect can be used to detect sugar in honey. When examining five different market samples of flower honey using this method, two of them showed a significant decrease in the photoluminescence intensity. A laboratory test for compliance with GOST 19792-2017 Standard requirements established an excess of the sucrose content in these samples. Luminescent determination of sugar in honey does not require complicated equipment and can be used to develop a new analytical method for determining the sugar content in counterfeit natural honey.

Abstract Two case-studies on uncommon metals whiskers, performed at the Reliability Analysis Laboratory (RAL) of Northrop Grumman Innovation Systems, are presented. The components analyzed are an Oven Controlled Crystal Oscillator (OCXO) and an Electromechanical Relay. Investigative techniques were used to determine the chemical and physical makeup of the metal whiskers and develop an understanding of the underlying effects and mechanisms that caused the conditions conducive to whisker growth.
