Piromyces mae and Piromyces dumbonica, two new species of uniflagellate anaerobic chytridiomycete fungi from the hindgut of the horse and elephant

Vegetative thalli, developing sporangia, and zoospores of two new uniflagellate anaerobic chytridiomycete gut fungi, Piromyces mae sp. nov. and Piromyces dumbonica sp.nov., isolated from manure derived from the hindgut of the horse and elephant, respectively, were examined by light and electron microscopy. Piromyces mae differs from Piromyces communis by having papillae-like structures on the sporangium. Piromyces dumbonica differs from P. communis by its C-shaped elongated circumflagellar ring and characteristic organelle distribution in the zoospores. The circumflagellar rings in both new species are tilted at about 10° towards the spur in both prereleased and free zoospores. Three struts in both species connect the circumflagellar ring to the skirt and connective (a newly described perikinetosomal structure) surrounding the kinetosome opposite to the skirt. The connective interconnects the strut, skirt, scoop, kinetosome, and spur. A general model of the kinetosome and perikinetosomal apparatus is proposed for the gut fungi. This model attempts to unify and clarify previous descriptions of the apparatus in these fungi and shows the limited range of variations reported. Orpinomyces bovis, a polycentric gut fungus isolated from a steer, was examined with both light and electron microscopy and renamed Orpinomyces joyonii comb.nov. on the basis of its general morphology and zoospore ultrastructure. The multinucleate rhizomycelium is extensively branched, and sporangia form exogenously on branched or unbranched sporangiophores. The organelles in the zoospores have a distribution pattern typical of other gut fungi, i.e., anterior ribosomal aggregates, central nuclei, and posterior presumptive hydrogenosomes. The perikinetosomal apparatus in O. joyonii is comparable to that in monocentric gut fungi but with minor variations. New details of the posterior dome are described. It contains highly ordered specialized lamellae, peripheral granules, and megatubules. Microtubules intersect the dome predominantly at approximately right angles to its surface; this differs from monocentric gut fungi, in which microtubules form a posterior fan running parallel to the dome. We suggest that both monocentric and polycentric gut fungi are monophyletic, since both have a similar, distinctive perikinetosomal apparatus, posterior dome, and organelle distribution pattern. In the present study, two new species of Nitzschia Hassall, Nitzschia pusilluhasta sp. nov. and Nitzschia australodesertorum sp. nov. are described from reservoirs in the state of São Paulo southeast Brazil. The morphology of the new species was analysed using light and electron microscopy. Nitzschia pusilluhasta is distinguished from morphologically related species by its valve outline, the shape of apices and fibulae, the absence of a gap between central fibulae, and the density of striae and areolae. Nitzschia australodesertorum differs from morphologically similar species in its valve outline, the shape of apices and fibulae, the presence of a gap between the central fibulae, and the density of fibulae and striae. The morphology and ecology of the new species are discussed and compared with morphologically related taxa. Information on the co-occurrence of other diatom species in the samples is also provided.

Two new species of Phialocephala were isolated from the periderm of living branches of forest trees in Germany. In culture, Phialocephala compacta Kowalski & Kehr sp.nov., found on Alnus, is characterized by crowded conidiogenous heads that become deeply pigmented with age. Phialocephala scopiformis Kowalski & Kehr sp.nov., isolated from Picea and other conifers, develops elongated, complex conidiogenous heads with up to 15 series of branches in culture. The taxonomic placement of both new species and their role in endophytism and in natural pruning of branches is discussed. This is the first detailed taxonomic study of the genus Navicula in the Krasnodar Territory of the Caucasus region, Russia. During the study of the genus in waterbodies of the Adegoy River valley 15 taxa were recorded. Two species, N. adegoyensis sp. nov. and N. pseudocryptofallax sp. nov., are described as new to science. Their morphology is studied by light and scanning electron microscopy, and comparisons with morphologically similar species are provided. The use of the name N. avenacea for N. lanceolata sensu auct. is discussed. Navicula diversity was higher in the Adegoy River than in pools elsewhere in the river valley.

Platygerris White comprises true bugs that inhabit the surface of water in moderate to fast-flowing freshwater habitats. This genus differs from Cylindrostethus Mayr and Potamobates Champion (Gerridae: Cylindrostethinae) by having a short and flattened body; the mandibular and maxillary plates fused; and the omphalium, lateral groove, and lateral evaporatorium of the scent apparatus inconspicuous. In this paper, we redescribe Platygerris, describe two new species from Colombia, and redescribe P. asymmetricus Hungerford, P. caeruleus Champion and P. depressus White. In addition, we present an updated identification key to the species of the genus. For the first time, the cuticular structure is described for the genus based on electron microscopy.

In the present study, we analyzed the taxonomy and ecology of fourteen species of Luticola registered in oligo- to hypereutrophic reservoirs of southeastern Brazil. Two new species were described using light and scanning electron microscopy. Luticola bartolomeii sp. nov. and Luticola iporangensis sp. nov. are distinguished from morphologically similar species by a combination of valve outline and dimensions. In addition, L. bartolomeii showed occluded isolated areolae that have a different shape and location, hitherto not observed in other Luticola species. We also compared the morphology of the new species with similar taxa and provided information on their ecological preferences. Luticola panamaensis is first recorded in Brazil, and another eight species are recorded for the first time for the state of São Paulo. This study expanded the distribution of species and added new information to the ecology of Luticola, as well as provided the first SEM images for some already known species. Information on the co-occurrence of other diatom species in the samples is also included.

Two new species from northeastern Somalia, Dicoma paivae and Dicoma cinerea (Asteraceae), both of section Psilocoma Harv., are described. Dicoma paivae is most similar to Dicoma cana Balf. f. of Socotra Island, from which it can be distinguished by its wider, twisted branches, larger, aristate, conduplicate leaves, smaller capitula, and straw-coloured, coriaceus inner phyllaries. Dicoma cinerea is very closely related to Dicoma schimperi (DC.) O. Hoffm. of northeast tropical Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, from which it can be distinguished by the dense whitish tomentum covering the whole plant and by its broadly ovate to almost orbicular leaves with margins bearing bulbous teeth. Two new species of the unicellular genus Mallomonas, M. parvula sp. nov. and M. retifera sp. nov., were found in freshwater ponds in the vicinity of Valdivia, South Chile. Scales and bristles of the silica armour have been studied by means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy.

Two new species of aero-aquatic fungi, Helicodendron praetermissum sp.nov. and Spirosphaera carici-graminis sp.nov. are described and illustrated. They are compared with similar species. Because they were found exclusively on monocotyledonous plant remains submerged in small pools and ditches, their ecology and distribution is discussed. Key words: mitosporic fungi, hyphomycetes, aero-aquatic fungi, Helicodendron praetermissum, Spirosphaera carici-graminis.
