Two new chromogenic sensors 1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)thiourea 1 and 1-(3-hydroxypyridin-2-yl)-3-(4-nitrophenyl)thiourea 2 bearing nitrophenyl and thiourea groups were designed and synthesized by one-step procedure and characterized through 1H NMR, 13C NMR, FTIR, and MS. The anion recognition property of the receptors was studied via naked-eye detection, UV–vis, and 1H NMR. Based on the existence of amino gen and hydroxyl moieties in receptors, receptors 1 and 2 exhibit obvious selectivity by the redshift of UV–vis signals, colour changes through naked-eye detection, and binding effects for F–, H2PO4–, and Ac–. Surprisingly, the detection limits of receptor 1 for F– and Ac– were calculated to be 5.45 × 10−7 and 2.11 × 10−7 (mol/L)−1, respectively, which indicated that F– and Ac– can be identified with high sensitivity by receptor 1. Besides, simple “test strips” were developed and were used as sensors for recognition of F–, H2PO4–, or Ac– in DMSO solution. Lastly, the mechanisms of the recognition process were studied through DFT calculation and 1H NMR titration.

In recent years, the wide application of fluoride materials has grown rapidly, therefore excessive discharge in the surrounding environment, especially in drinking water and organic effluent, has become a potential hazard to humans, and has even resulted in fluorosis disease. The development of a highly effective and convenient method to recognize fluoride anions in surrounding environments seems necessary and urgent. Among which, the development of a colorimetric and fluorescence fluoride chemosensor with obvious color changing allowing for naked-eye detection with high sensitivity and selectivity is more interesting and challenging. In this minireview, current novel colorimetric and fluorescence chemosensors for fluoride anions by hydrogen-bond interaction are introduced, including obvious color changing by naked-eye detection, high sensitivity and selectivity, non-pollution and fluoride extraction ability, aqueous detection, and other additional functions. Finally, the perspective of the fluoride chemosensor design concept and potential evolution trends are pointed out.

In this paper, a highly sensitive plasmonic enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (pELISA) was developed for the naked-eye detection of fumonisin B1 (FB1). Glucose oxidase (GOx) was used as an alternative to horseradish peroxidase as the carrier of the competing antigen. GOx catalyzed the oxidation of glucose to produce hydrogen peroxide, which acted as a reducing agent to reduce Au3+ to Au on the surface of gold seeds (5 nm), This reaction led to a color change in the solution from colorless to purple, which was observable to the naked eye. Various parameters that could influence the detection performance of pELISA were investigated. The developed method exhibited a considerably high sensitivity for FB1 qualitative naked-eye detection, with a visible cut-off limit of 1.25 ng/mL. Moreover, the proposed pELISA showed a good linear range of 0.31–10 ng/mL with a half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) of 1.86 ng/mL, which was approximately 13-fold lower than that of a horseradish peroxidase- (HRP)-based conventional ELISA. Meanwhile, the proposed method was highly specific and accurate. In summary, the new pELISA exhibited acceptable accuracy and precision for sensitive naked-eye detection of FB1 in maize samples and can be applied for the detection of other chemical contaminants.
