It is shown that the hole in the centre of 3 H , 3 He and 4 He , the neutron halos in nuclei, the α- and other clustering effects in nuclei and the nuclear molecules all basically arise due to the same underlying effect. We shall show that all these ground state properties of nuclei are manifestations of quark effects. The role of triton clustering in very neutron rich nuclei is emphasized. All these require the concept of hidden colour states which arise from confinement ideas of QCD for the multi-quark systems. This provides a comprehensive understanding of diverse nuclear effects and makes unique predictions.

The three-body calculations on halo nuclei are reviewed and discussed. It is concluded that the ground state properties of halo nuclei 11 Li , 14 Be and 17 B are independent of the shape of two-body potentials and an explanation on it is given. It is also shown that an introduction of a three-body interaction may be useful for a good explanation of the properties of halo nuclei.

The ground state energies, sizes and deformations of 1897 even–even nuclei with 10≤Z ≤110 have been carried out by using the Relativistic Mean Field (RMF) model. In the present calculations, the nonlinear RMF force NL3* recent refitted version of the NL3 force has been used. The BCS (Bardeen–Cooper–Schrieffer) formalism with constant gap approximation has been taken into account for pairing correlations. The predictions of RMF model for the ground state properties of some nuclei have been discussed in detail.

We have developed a microscopic cluster model for two-neutron halo nuclei with special attention paid to long distance correlations between the core and the valence neutrons. The emphasis put on a good treatment of the asymptotic region is necessary for nuclear reaction calculations involving these nuclei. In this contribution, we present the first results of our model applied to the ground state of 6 He bound by an effective central Minnesota N-N interaction, and compare with experiment and other theoretical models.

Using a three-body model with density-dependent contact interaction, we discuss the role of dineutron correlation in the ground state properties as well as in the dipole excitation of typical weakly-bound Borromean nuclei, 11 Li and 6 He . We show that, while both the nuclei manifest themselves similar strong dineutron correlations to each other in the ground state, the energy distributions for the two emitted neutrons from the dipole excitation are considerably different. We also discuss briefly the diproton correlation in a proton-rich Borromean nucleus, 17 Ne .
