A five-dimensional Einstein spacetime with (non)vanishing cosmological constant is analyzed in detail. The metric is in close analogy with the four-dimensional massless uncharged C-metric in many aspects. The coordinate system, horizons and causal structures, relations to standard form of de Sitter, anti de Sitter and Minkowski vacua are investigated. After a boost and Kaluza–Klein reduction, we get an exact solution of four-dimensional Einstein–Maxwell–Liouville theory which reduces to a solution to Einstein–Liouville theory in the limit of zero boost velocity and to that of Einstein–Maxwell–dilaton theory in the case of zero cosmological constant.

The existence of a small and positive cosmological constant attributed to gravitational vacuum energy (or dark energy) in the present-day universe appears to be the most pressing obstacle as well as opportunity to significantly improving the models of four-dimensional cosmology from fundamental theories of gravity, including string theory and modern Kaluza-Klein theories. In seeking to resolve this problem, one naturally wonders if the real world can somehow be interpreted as an inflating de Sitter "brane" embedded in a five or even higher-dimensional space-time described by warped or non-factorizable geometry. In this scenario, the four-dimensional cosmological constant may well be determined in terms of two length scales: one is a scale associated with the size of extra dimensions and the other is a scale associated with the expansion rate of the universe, which is also related to the warping of extra spaces.Key words: CosmologyThe Himalayan Physics Vol.1, No.1, May, 2010Page: 18-24Uploaded Date: 28 July, 2011

Abstract We study de Sitter configurations in ten-dimensional string models where supersymmetry is either absent or broken at the string scale. To this end, we derive expressions for the cosmological constant in general warped flux compactifications with localized sources, which yield no-go theorems that extend previous works on supersymmetric cases. We frame our results within a dimensional reduction and connect them to a number of Swampland conjectures, corroborating them further in the absence of supersymmetry. Furthermore, we construct a top-down string embedding of de Sitter brane-world cosmologies within unstable anti-de Sitter landscapes, providing a concrete realization of a recently revisited proposal.

Gravitational radiation plays an important role in astrophysics. Based on the fact that our universe is expanding, the gravitational radiation when a positive cosmological constant is presented has been studied along with two different ways recently, one is the Bondi–Sachs (BS) framework in which the result is shown by BS quantities in the asymptotic null structure, the other is the perturbation approach in which the result is presented by the quadrupoles of source. Therefore, it is worth to interpret the quantities in asymptotic null structure in terms of the information of the source. In this paper, we investigate this problem and find the explicit expressions of BS quantities in terms of the quadrupoles of source in asymptotically de Sitter spacetime. We also estimate how far away the source is, the cosmological constant may affect the detection of the gravitational wave.

We consider the formulation and some elaboration of p-adic and adelic quantum cosmology. The adelic generalization of the Hartle–Hawking proposal does not work in models with matter fields. p-adic and adelic minisuperspace quantum cosmology is well defined as an ordinary application of p-adic and adelic quantum mechanics. It is illustrated by a few cosmological models in one, two and three minisuperspace dimensions. As a result of p-adic quantum effects and the adelic approach, these models exhibit some discreteness of the minisuperspace and cosmological constant. In particular, discreteness of the de Sitter space and its cosmological constant is emphasized.

In order to obtain the geometry of a global monopole without cosmological constant and electric charge in [Formula: see text] dimensions, we make use of the broken [Formula: see text] symmetry. In the absence of an exact solution, we determine the series solutions for both the metric and monopole functions in a consistent manner that satisfies all equations in appropriate powers. The new expansion elements are of the form [Formula: see text] for the radial distance [Formula: see text] and positive integers [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] constrained by [Formula: see text]. To the lowest order of expansion, we find that in analogy with the negative cosmological constant the geometry of the global monopole acts repulsively, i.e. in the absence of a cosmological constant the global monopole plays at large distances the role of a negative cosmological constant.
