In D = 3, 4, 6 and 10 space-time dimensions considered is a string model invariant under transformations of N = 1 space-time supersymmetry and n = D − 2 local worldsheet supersymmetry with both the Virasoro constraints solved in the twistor form. The twistor solution survives in a modified form even in the presence of the heterotic fermions.

We investigate the quantization of the bosonic string model which has a local U (1) V × U (1) A gauge invariance as well as the general coordinate and Weyl invariance on the world-sheet. The model is quantized by Lagrangian and Hamiltonian BRST formulations á la Batalin, Fradkin and Vilkovisky and noncovariant light-cone gauge formulation. Upon the quantization the model turns out to be formulated consistently in (26+2)-dimensional background space–time involving two time-like coordinates.

De Sitter space–time is considered to be represented by a D-dimensional hyperboloid embedded in (D+1)-dimensional Minkowski space–time. The string equation is derived from a string action which contains a Lagrange multiplier to restrict coordinates to de Sitter space–time. The string system of equations is equivalent to a type of generalized sinh–Gordon equation. The evolution equations for all the variables including the coordinates and their derivatives are obtained for D=2,3 and 4.

We present a covariant action describing chiral bosonic string theories in space-time dimensions d<26 and a covariant (1, 0) supersymmetric action describing heterotic string theories in space-time of dimension d<10. The anomaly cancellation conditions are found. In the four-dimensional case the supersymmetric action corresponds to the SO(44) heterotic string theory.

The heterotic string of the uncompactified dimensions less than ten, D<10, without space-time supersymmetry is considered. The states which have excitations only in the instanton sectors appear in the spectrum. These states become tachyonic below or above a certain scale of the compactified space and make the vacuum unstable. These phenomena are understood as phase transitions due to noncontractible loop on the compactified space. The investigation into the effective potential tells that the phase transition is of first order. The properties of the new phase are studied both in the field theoretic and the stringy manners. The heterotic string at finite temperature in D<10 is also discussed.

We calculate the one-loop amplitudes for the emission of four massless particles in the heterotic string model. In particular, we consider the amplitudes involving four gravitons and gauge bosons supermultiplets as well as those for the mixed processes. We also discuss their modular invariance and finiteness.
