The establishment of [Formula: see text] mixing in 2007 generated a renaissance of interest in charm physics. The field gained even more strength with the commissioning of the LHC, which opened a new era of high sensitivity measurements. In this paper, we briefly review the basic formalism and experimental techniques related to charm mixing and to CP violation searches in D-meson decays and then report on recent experimental results obtained by the B-factories, CDF and LHCb.

We review current experimental results on charm mixing and CP violation. We survey experimental techniques, including time-dependent, time-independent, and quantum-correlated measurements. We review techniques that use a slow pion tag from D*+→π+D0+ c.c. decays and those that do not, and cover two-body and multi-body D0 decay modes. We provide a summary of D-mixing results to date and comment on future experimental prospects at the LHC and other new or planned facilities.

LHCb continues to expand its world-leading sample of charmed hadrons collected during LHCs Run 1 (2010-2012) and Run 2 (2015-present). This sample is yielding some of the most stringent tests of the Standard Model understanding of charm physics. This includes precise measurements of the neutral D-meson mixing parameters and some of the most sensitive searches for direct and indirect CP violation in charm interactions.

Charm physics has attracted increased attention after the first evidence for charm mixing was observed in 2007. The level of attention has risen sharply after LHCb reported first evidence for CP violation in the charm sector. Neither mixing nor CP violation have been established by a single unambiguous measurement to date. This review covers the status of mixing and CP violation measurements and comments on the challenges on the road ahead, both on the experimental and theoretical side, and on ways to tackle them.
