A method to simulate anomalous fermion–boson interactions in Wtb vertex is presented with a minimal set of simulated samples of single top quark events at the LHC energies. In the proposed method, additional subsidiary vector fields corresponding to the Standard Model gauge fields are implemented for each type of the anomalous vertex structure. The method allows to simulate a manifestation of anomalous gauge couplings in two approaches used in experimental analyses either keeping only the linear order contributions in the anomalous couplings or keeping all contributions in numerators and denominators as appeared in matrix elements. For the processes with several anomalous couplings contributing simultaneously to the production and to the decay as well as to various interference terms the method allows to model correctly the dependence of kinematic distributions on anomalous couplings. The method shows how to generate a minimum set of event samples needed for a concrete analysis. All the single top quark production mechanisms, t-, s- and associative tW-channels, are considered. The correctness of the proposed method is demonstrated.

The impact of anomalous Wtb couplings on tWb process of the single top quark production has been probed in different schemes of tWb modeling. A special attention devotes to influence of the particular schemes to the anomalous couplings sensitivity. The distributions of representative variables demonstrate different behaviour in different simulation schemes, therefore the correct probe for anomalous Wtb couplings require specific approach to simulate BSM contribution. Special approach to search for BSM contribution in the off-shell tWb process is proposed in this paper. The approach is based on the kinematic separation of the double and single resonant contributions by means of neural network. The specific BSM properties are considered separately for the double and single resonant events. Such approach allows to add information on the anomalous Wtb coupling from simultaneous consideration of the tt¯ (double resonant) and tWb (off-shell, single resonant) contribution of tWb processes and therefore can improve the sensitivity to the anomalous Wtb couplings.

An overview of recent results of single-top quark production at the LHC using data collected with the CMS detector is presented. The CMS experiment has measured the electroweak production of the top quark in three production modes, namely t-channel, tW-channel, and s-channel. Measurements of the rare processes involving a single-top quark with a Z boson and a single-top quark with a γ are also discussed. All measurements are in agreement with the standard model prediction, and no sign of physics beyond the standard model is observed.

On March 4, 2009, the DØ and CDF collaborations at Fermilab's Tevatron Collider submitted papers to Physical Review Letters announcing observation of single top quark production.1,2 This review paper describes the successful searches carried out independently by the two collaborations, allowing the reader to see the similarities and differences that led to the simultaneous discoveries. Both collaborations measured a cross section [Formula: see text] consistent with the standard model prediction at 5.0 standard deviation significance, and set a lower limit on the quark mixing matrix element |Vtb| without assuming matrix unitarity with three quark generations.

We search for Standrod Model single-top-quark production in the W -gluon fusion and W* channels using 106 pb-1 of data from [Formula: see text] collisions at [Formula: see text] collected with the Collider Detector at Fermilab. We set an upper limit at 95% C.L. on the combined Wg + W* single-top cross section of 13.5 pb, roughly five-and-a-half times larger larer than the standard model prediction. Separate 95% C.L. upper limits in the Wg-fusion and W* channels ae also determined and are found to be 13.5 and 12.9 pb respectively.

A review is presented of the current experimental status of the top quark sector of the Standard Model. The measurements summarized include searches for electroweak single top production, the latest results on the [Formula: see text] production cross-section, and searches for new physics in top quark production and decay. In addition, the recent measurement of the top quark mass to a precision of 0.7% is highlighted.
