We have calculated the persistent currents and the density of states in an open metallic ring connected to an electron reservoir in the presence of a magnetic flux. As a special case, we have considered the situation wherein electrons enter and leave the ring in a sub-barrier regime characterised by evanescent modes throughout the circumference of the ring. In such a situation, the persistent current arises due to two non-classical effects, namely, Aharonov-Bohm effect and quantum tunnelling.

Quantum topological effects like Aharonov–Bohm and Aharonov–Casher effects in the metallic ring with a localized impurity are studied. The impurity couples with the conduction electrons by exchange and correlated hybridized interactions. It is shown that the impurity changes the charge and spin persistent current oscillations (the magnitudes and the periods) in contrast with the normal metal situation.

Microscopic spin and charge persistent currents in a metallic ring with the Anderson magnetic impurity are studied. It is shown that the impurity changes caused by the external magnetic and electric fluxes, the Aharonov-Bohm and Aharonov-Casher oscillations (magnitudes and periods), contrast with the normal metallic case. Spin-charge separation is the reason for the fractional Φ0/N (N is the number of electrons) period of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations and F0/(N−2M) (M is the number of paired electrons) period of the Aharonov-Casher oscillations.

We study the analogue of the Aharonov–Bohm effect for bound states for a neutral particle with a permanent magnetic dipole moment interacting with an external field. We consider a neutral particle confined to moving between two coaxial cylinders and show the dependence of the energy levels on the Aharonov-Casher quantum flux. Moreover, we show that the same flux dependence of the bound states can be found when the neutral particle is confined to a one-dimensional quantum ring and a quantum dot, and we also calculate the persistent currents in each case.
