This paper presents a new algorithm for detection and compensation of backlight images. The proposed technique attacks the weakness of the conventional backlight image processing methods such as over-saturation, losing contrast and so on. The proposed algorithm consists of two operation phases: detection and compensation phases. In the detection phase, we use the spatial position characteristic and histogram of backlight image to obtain two image indices, which can determine the backlight degree of an image. Fuzzy logic is then used to integrate these two indices into a final backlight index determining the final backlight degree of an image precisely. Second, in the compensation phase, to solve the over-saturation problem that exists usually in conventional image compensation methods, we propose the adaptive compensation-curve scheme to compensate and enhance the brightness of backlight images. The luminance of a backlight image is adjusted according to the compensation curve, which is adapted dynamically according to the backlight degree indicated by the backlight index estimated in the detection phase. The performance of the proposed technique is tested on 100 backlight images covering various kinds of backlight conditions and degrees. The experimental and comparison results clearly show the superiority of the proposed technique.

Agriculture is the backbone of human sustenance in this world. With growing population, there is need for increased productivity in agriculture to be able to meet the demands. Diseases can occur on any part of a plant, but in this paper only the symptoms in the fruits of a plant is considered using segmentation algorithm and edge/ sizing detectors. We also looked at image processing using fuzzy logic controller. The system was designed using object oriented analysis and design methodology. It was implemented using MySQL for the database, and PHP programming language. This system will be of great benefit to farmers and will encourage them in investing their resources since crop diseases can be detected and eliminated early.

One of the main causes of blindness is diabetic retinopathy (DR) and it may affect people of any ages. In these days, both young and old ages are affected by diabetes, and the di abetes is the main cause of DR. Hence, it is necessary to have an automated system with good accuracy and less computation time to diagnose and treat DR, and the automated system can simplify the work of ophthalmologists. The objective is to present an overview of various works recently in detecting and segmenting the various lesions of DR. Papers were categorized based on the diagnosing tools and the methods used for detecting early and advanced stage lesions. The early lesions of DR are microaneurysms, hemorrhages, exudates, and cotton wool spots and in the advanced stage, new and fragile blood vessels can be grown. Results have been evaluated in terms of sensitivity, specificity, accuracy and receiver operating characteristic curve. This paper analyzed the various steps and different algorithms used recently for the detection and classification of DR lesions. A comparison of performances has been made in terms of sensitivity, specificity, area under the curve, and accuracy. Suggestions, future workand the area to be improved were also discussed. Keywords: Diabetic retinopathy, Image processing, Morphological operations, Neural network, Fuzzy logic.

Traffic light plays an important role in the urban traffic management. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the traffic controller for effective traffic management and better traffic flow leading to greener environment. In this paper, an advanced and intelligent traffic light controller is proposed, utilising the fuzzy logic technology and image processing technique. A fuzzy logic control has been implemented to provide the attribute of intelligence to the system. For real-time image acquisition, the process is further linked to the fuzzy logic controller which generates a unique output for each input pattern. Here image processing and fuzzy logic tool boxes of MATLAB are used where the final output is sent to Peripheral Interface Controller (PIC) microcontroller to drive the traffic signals in the desired manner. The results obtained show an improvement of 44% in the overall outcome of traffic management as compared to the conventional traffic controller, marking great feasibility and practicality of the current model.

This paper presents a new method for calculating the insulation health index (HI) of oil-paper transformers rated under 110 kV to provide a snapshot of health condition using binary logistic regression. Oil breakdown voltage (BDV), total acidity of oil, 2-Furfuraldehyde content, and dissolved gas analysis (DGA) are singled out in this method as the input data for determining HI. A sample of transformers is used to test the proposed method. The results are compared with the results calculated for the same set of transformers using fuzzy logic. The comparison results show that the proposed method is reliable and effective in evaluating transformer health condition.
