The Neumann axisymmetric boundary value problem is considered for a vibrating thin clamped circular plate embedded in the flat rigid screen in the outlet of the circular cylindrical cavity. It is assumed that the two pistons, one cylindrical and the other one annular/circular, are vibrating inside the cavity with the same single frequency and different initial phases. The pistons are the only sources of excitation of the fluid. The acoustic pressure difference on both sides of the plate forces its vibrations. The acoustic waves are radiated into the half-space above it. A rigorous theoretical analysis of sound radiation has been performed based on the exact solution of the problem of free vibrations of the plate. The system of three coupled partial differential equations is solved. They are the two Helmholtz equations for the cavity and for the half-space, and the equation of motion of the plate. Consequently, the acoustic pressure distribution in both spaces is presented as well as the acoustic power radiated.

We present a numerical and experimental study of acoustophoretic manipulation in a microfluidic channel using dual-wavelength standing surface acoustic waves (SSAWs) to transport microparticles into different outlets. The SSAW fields were excited by interdigital transducers (IDTs) composed of two different pitches connected in parallel and series on a lithium niobate substrate such that it yielded spatially superimposed and separated dual-wavelength SSAWs, respectively. SSAWs of a singltablee target wavelength can be efficiently excited by giving an RF voltage of frequency determined by the ratio of the velocity of the SAW to the target IDT pitch (i.e., f = cSAW/p). However, the two-pitch IDTs with similar pitches excite, less efficiently, non-target SSAWs with the wavelength associated with the non-target pitch in addition to target SSAWs by giving the target single-frequency RF voltage. As a result, dual-wavelength SSAWs can be formed. Simulated results revealed variations of acoustic pressure fields induced by the dual-wavelength SSAWs and corresponding influences on the particle motion. The acoustic radiation force in the acoustic pressure field was calculated to pinpoint zero-force positions and simulate particle motion trajectories. Then, dual-wavelength SSAW acoustofluidic devices were fabricated in accordance with the simulation results to experimentally demonstrate switching of SSAW fields as a means of transporting particles. The effects of non-target SSAWs on pre-actuating particles were predicted and observed. The study provides the design considerations needed for the fabrication of acoustofluidic devices with IDT-excited multi-wavelength SSAWs for acoustophoresis of microparticles.

A theoretical analysis of transient sound radiation from a clamped circular plate is given using a pressure impulse response method. The vibration response of the plate to a transient point force is obtained. The modal pressure impulse response functions for the plate are derived from the Rayleigh surface integral and numerically convoluted with the modal acceleration response of the plate. The impulse response functions are closely related to the mode shapes and the geometry of the problem. They relate the spatial domain to the temporal domain of the pressure waves. The pressure impulse response waveforms are given for a number of plate modes and the changes in the waveforms with distance from the plate are shown. Sound radiation due to forced and free vibrations of the plate are discussed.

At present, development of manufacturer’s ultrasonic cleaning tank (UCT) to match the requirements from consumers usually relies on computer simulation based on harmonic response analysis (HRA). However, this technique can only be used with single-frequency UCT. For dual frequency, the manufacturer used information from empirical experiment alongside trial-and-error methods to develop prototypes, resulting in the UCT that may not be fully efficient. Thus, lack of such a proper calculational method to develop the dual frequency UCT was a problem that greatly impacted the manufacturers and consumers. To resolve this problem, we proposed a new model of simulation using transient dynamics analysis (TDA) which was successfully applied to develop the prototype of dual frequency UCT, 400 W, 18 L in capacity, eight horn transducers, 28 and 40 kHz frequencies for manufacturing. The TDA can indicate the acoustic pressure at all positions inside the UCT in transient states from the start to the states ready for proper cleaning. The calculation also reveals the correlation between the positions of acoustic pressure and the placement positions of transducers and frequencies. In comparison with the HRA at 28 kHz UCT, this TDA yielded the results more accurately than the HRA simulation, comparing to the experiments. Furthermore, the TDA can also be applied to the multifrequency UCTs as well. In this article, the step-by-step development of methodology was reported. Finally, this simulation can lead to the successful design of the high-performance dual frequencies UCT for the manufacturers.

The paper concerns on the free vibrations of circular plate with arbitrary number of the mounted masses at arbitrary positions by using the integral equation method. A set of complete systems of orthogonal functions, which is constructed by Bessel functions of the first kind, is used to construct the Green's function of circular plates firstly. Then the eigenvalue problem of free vibration of circular plate carrying oscillators and elastic supports at arbitrary positions is transformed into the problem of integral equation by using the superposition theorem and the physical meaning of the Green’s function. And then the eigenvalue problem of integral equation is transformed into a standard eigenvalue problem of a matrix with infinite order. Numerical examples are presented.

Acoustic levitation forces can be used to manipulate small objects and liquid without mechanical contact or contamination. To use acoustic levitation for contactless robotic grippers, automated insertion of objects into the acoustic pressure field is necessary. This work presents analytical models based on which concepts for the controlled insertion of objects are developed. Two prototypes of acoustic grippers are implemented and used to experimentally verify the lifting of objects into the acoustic field. Using standing acoustic waves and by dynamically adjusting the acoustic power, the lifting of high-density objects (>7 g/cm3) from acoustically transparent surfaces is demonstrated. Moreover, a combination of different acoustic traps is used to lift lower-density objects from acoustically reflective surfaces. The provided results open up new possibilities for the implementation of acoustic levitation in robotic grippers, which have the potential to be used in a variety of industrial applications.

The apparent resistivity technique using half‐space models has been employed in helicopter‐borne resistivity mapping for twenty years. These resistivity algorithms yield the apparent resistivity from the measured in‐phase and quadrature response arising from the flow of electrical conduction currents for a given frequency. However, these algorithms, which assume free‐space magnetic permeability, do not yield a reliable value for the apparent resistivity in highly magnetic areas. This is because magnetic polarization also occurs, which modifies the electromagnetic (EM) response, causing the computed resistivity to be erroneously high. Conversely, the susceptibility of a magnetic half‐space can be computed from the measured EM response, assuming an absence of conduction currents. However, the presence of conduction currents will cause the computed susceptibility to be erroneously low. New methods for computing the apparent resistivity and apparent magnetic permeability have been developed for the magnetic conductive half‐space. The in‐phase and quadrature responses at the lowest frequency are first used to estimate the apparent magnetic permeability. The lowest frequency should be used to calculate the permeability because this minimizes the contribution to the measured signal from conduction currents. Knowing the apparent magnetic permeability then allows the apparent resistivity to be computed for all frequencies. The resistivity can be computed using different methods. Because the EM response of magnetic permeability is much greater for the in‐phase component than for the quadrature component, it may be better in highly magnetic environments to derive the resistivity using the quadrature component at two frequencies (the quad‐quad algorithm) rather than using the in‐phase and quadrature response at a single frequency (the in‐phase‐quad algorithm). However, the in‐phase‐quad algorithm has the advantage of dynamic range, and it gives credible resistivity results when the apparent permeability has been obtained correctly.
