A novel ZnPc monomer as well as PPV-ZnPc conjugated polymers have been synthesized and their optical power limiting (OPL) performances toward picosecond laser pulses at 532 nm have been measured. The comparison with the performance of C 60 under the same condition indicates that two of the compounds synthesized outperformed C 60 at picosecond time scale. It was found that conjugated PPV polymers containing a small amount of ZnPc cannot only preserve, but have also showed improvement over the monomer's OPL properties. It is believed that the backbone modification was responsible for the enhanced OPL performance.

ABSTRACTMeasurements of the third-order susceptibilities of new dithienylethylenes in solutions using a degenerate four wave mixing technique at λ=532 nm in picosecond regime were made. From these measurements we deduced the second order hyperpolarizabilities. Optical power limiting properties of the mentioned compounds using nanosecond laser pulses in the visible range are evaluated. The dispersion of nonlinear absorption coefficients is obtained. The appropriate quantum chemical calculations are carried out.

Nonlinear transmission property of excited state proton transfer molecule 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole was investigated at 355 nm and 532 nm using picosecond laser pulses. The experiment result shows that the transmissivity of 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole is nonlinear at 355 nm but it is linear at 532 nm. The nonlinear transmissivity of 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole originates from the larger nonlinearity of tautomer formed in excited state proton transfer process. Therefore 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzoxazole might be used as ultrafast optical amplitude limit material.

AbstractNonlinear optical properties of transition metal-phosphine complexes have been measured at 532 nm by degenerate four-wave mixing. Large second-order molecular hyperpolarizabilities, γ, have been found for complexes containing two phosphine ligands. The measured γ values are closely related to the type and coordination geometry of the phosphine ligands, and the γ values vary as the fifth power of the number of substituents with π-electrons structure.

ABSTRACTA previously presented computer model was used to calculate melt thresholds and carrier temperatures in crystalline silicon and gallium arsenide subjected to picosecond laser pulses at 532 nm. The energy relaxation time of hot carriers was a variable parameter. For Si, a thermalization time of 1 ps yields results which are in very satisfactory agreement with published experimental data: the melt threshold is 0.19 J/cm2, and the maximum carrier temperature for the threshold pulse is 5500 K. The melt threshold in GaAs is substantially less, 0.03 J/cm2 for a thermalization time of 1 ps.

A novel multibranched nonlinear chromophore containing carbazole moiety,4, 4´, 4´´-tris(9-(3,6-tert-butyl)carbazyl-trans-styryl) -1, 3, 5-triphenylbenzene (TCSTPB),was synthesized and characterized by 1HNMR and elemental analysis. One-photon absorption in chloroform shows the optical transparent property of the chromophore in the near infrared region. The properties of optical power limiting induced by three-photon absorption (3PA) are demonstrated. Large 3PA coefficients and the corresponding 3PA molecular cross section as high as 10-74 cm6 s2 was obtained pumped by picosecond laser pulse at 1.06 μm from nonlinear transmission measurements.

Silver nanowires were fabricated in a direct current electric field using a solid-state ionic method, and were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The reverse saturable absorption and optical limiting properties in silver nanowires, suspended in de-ionized water were investigated by using an EKSPLA (PL2143A) picosecond laser, which produced 30 ps laser pulses at 532 nm with a repetition rate of 2 Hz. Experimental results indicate silver nanowires have obvious optical limiting properties.

A single crystal of (5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinato)-silver was obtained and its structure reported. Using direct growth on quartz substrates method, a crystal thin film was obtained and the film’s morphology was investigated by atomic force microscopy. The nonlinear absorption properties of the film were studied using open aperture [Formula: see text]-scan technique by picosecond laser pulses at different fluence at wavelength 532 nm, nonlinear saturable absorption behavior was observed. Time-dependent unrestricted Hartree-Fock with the basis set LanL2DZ was used in computing the linear and non-linear optical properties of (5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrinato)-silver.
