Cubic solid solutions AgxPb[Formula: see text]S are synthesized by chemical co-deposition from aqueous solutions of lead acetate and silver nitrate in the presence of a sulfidizing, complexing and stabilizing agent. For the first time, thermal expansion of the synthesized semiconductor solid solutions AgxPb[Formula: see text]S is determined.

Single-phase powders of AgxPb1-xS cubic solid solutions with a maximum relative silver content up to x = 0.12 were synthesized from aqueous solutions of lead acetate and silver nitrate in the presence of a sulfidizing agent, complexing and stabilizing agents. Thermal expansion of synthesized semiconductor solid solutions AgxPb1-xS was measured for the first time by dilatometry in the temperature range of 295-580 K. It is shown that the replacement of lead atoms by silver atoms in AgxPb1-xS leads to a small decrease in the thermal expansion coefficient associated with a change in the anharmonicity of atomic oscillations.

Single-phase limited cubic solid solutions Pb1-xAgxS based on PbS with a metal sublattice alloyed with silver are obtained. The maximum relative content of silver in solid solutions Pb1-xAgxS reaches x = 0.15. For the first time the thermal expansion of semiconductor solid solutions Pb1-xAgxS was measured by dilatometry method in the temperature range 295-580 K. Substitution of lead atoms by silver atoms in Pb1-xAgxS leads to a decrease in the coefficient of thermal expansion associated with a change in the anharmonicity of atomic vibrations and a weak increase in the elastic properties. For single-crystal particles PbS and solid solutions Pb1-xAgxS, spatial distributions of the elastic modulus E, Poisson's ratio , and linear compressibility  as a function of the direction (hkl) are found. The reflection spectra of the synthesized powders PbS, Ag2S and Pb1-xAgxS are measured and it is shown that the replacement of lead with silver in PbS is accompanied by an increase in the width of the band gap.

The synthesis and structure of disulfane are presented. Pure disulfane, H2S2, has been obtained by the cracking distillation of raw sulfane mixtures in a rotary evaporator, thus substituting the classical cracking column for the rotating flask of the evaporator. Pure, gaseous dideuterodisulfane could be generated by the solvolysis of bis(methyldiphenylsilyl)disulfane, (MePh2Si)2S2, with D2O in the presence of trichloroacetic acid as stabilizing agent. Partially deuterated disulfane has been prepared by H,D exchange between pure H2S2 and DCl. For the first time the molecular structure of HSSH has been determined based solely on microwave spectroscopy with the following parameters: r(SS) = 2.0564 A, r(SH) = 1.3421 A, dihedral angle γ = 90.34°, and <(SSH) = 97.88°.

The objective of the present article is to study the influence of TiB2 addition on the transformation behavior of yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP). A range of TZP(Y)–TiB2 composites with different zirconia starting powder grades and TiB2 phase contents (up to 50 vol%) were processed by the hot-pressing route. Thermal expansion data, as obtained by thermo-mechanical analysis were used to assess the ZrO2 phase transformation in the composites. The thermal expansion hysteresis of the transformable ceramics provides information concerning the transformation behavior in the temperature range of the martensitic transformation and the low-temperature degradation. Furthermore, the transformation behavior and susceptibility to low-temperature degradation during thermal cycling were characterized in terms of the overall amount and distribution of the yttria stabilizer, zirconia grain size, possible dissolution of TiB2 phase, and the amount of residual stress generated in the Y-TZP matrix due to the addition of titanium diboride particles. For the first time, it is demonstrated in the present work that the thermally induced phase transformation of tetragonal zirconia in the Y-TZP composites can be controlled by the intentional addition of the monoclinic zirconia particles into the 3Y-TZP matrix.

Thermal expansion measurements have been performed on a uvarovite rich garnet sample for the first time and compared with the expansion data on grossular and pyrope-rich garnets reported in the literature. A semiclassical model has been used to analyze the data and to obtain various thermodynamic parameters. Using these parameters, the lattice specific heat and the corresponding entropy have also been calculated.
