(Zn2Al-LDH/ZnTPPS)n composite films with notable third-order optical nonlinearities

New inorganic-organic transparent composite films of the formula (Zn[Formula: see text]Al-LDH/ZnTPPS)[Formula: see text] were fabricated using exfoliated cationic Zn[Formula: see text]Al layered double hydroxide (Zn[Formula: see text]Al-LDH) nanosheets and anionic meso-tertra(4-sulfophenyl) zinc porphyrin (ZnTPPS) through an electrostatic layerbylayer self-assembly method. The resulting composite films were characterized by UV-vis spectroscopy (UV-vis) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results showed that the films have relatively smooth and orderly surfaces, with the large ring plane of the porphyrin molecules vertically aligned LDH nanosheets and can grow in a nearly linear fashion with increasing the deposition cycles. Z-scan measurements, which were conducted under laser irradiation at a wavelength of 532 nm pulse width of 6 ns, repetition rate of 10 Hz and light intensity at focus [Formula: see text] of 10 [Formula: see text]J, revealed that the composite films have notable saturation absorption (cf., ZnTPPS in solution shows reverse saturation) and optical nonlinear self-defocusing behavior with the nonlinear optical absorption coefficient [Formula: see text] refractive index [Formula: see text], and third-order NLO susceptibility [Formula: see text] of the films increasing with the increase in number of layers of films ([Formula: see text] value is up to 7.86 × 10[Formula: see text] esu when [Formula: see text] 40), implying the NLO responses could be modified by fine tuning the thickness of composite films.

In this paper, the graphene-polyaniline (PANI) nanocomposite thin film was prepared by the in situ self-assembly method for the ammonia (NH3) gas sensor application, which was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-vis spectroscopy. The NH3 sensing performance and mechanism of the nanocomposite film were investigated. The results revealed that the sensor based on graphene-polyaniline nanocomposite film exhibited better sensing properties and restorability than those of single graphene film.

Layered double hydroxide (LDH) hybrid materials of Zn-Al-layered double hydroxide-3,4-dichlorophenoxy acetate acidnanocomposites (ZADs) were prepared by direct self-assembly method. The pH of the solution was adjusted to 7.5 using 2M NaOH. Various Zn2+ to Al3+ molar ratios, R ranging from 1 to 6 were used with a fixed concentration of 3,4-D at 0.3 M. The Powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) patterns showed the formation of well-ordered nanocomposite with the expansion of basal spacing from 8.9 Å in the Zinc-Aluminium-Layered Double Hydroxide (ZAL) to 18.7 - 22.1 Å in the resulting nanocomposites. The Fourier transform infrared (FTIR)spectra for the nanocomposites showed features for both ZAL and ZAD, showing the successful intercalation of the organic moiety into the LDH interlayer. The percentage loading of 3,4-dichlorophenoxy acetati acid(3,4-D) in LDH was found to be increased from 34.7-48.1 % (w/w), as the mole fraction of Al decreased from 0.44-0.15. This study shows that the mole fraction of zinc ion was replaced by aluminium ion in the LDH plays an important role in controlling the physic-chemical properties of the resulting material.

By a layer-by-layer self-assembly method, reduced graphene oxide-based composite films with high photoelectronic activity were assembled with 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(p-N,N,N-trimethylanilinium)porphyrin and copper sulfophthalocyanine as the co-sensitizers.

Gold-poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (Au-PEDOT) nanowires with Au nanoparticles embedded in the polymer matrix and polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) modified Au-PEDOT coaxial nanocables with a core-shell structure have been synthesized by a new and facile self-assembly method. The morphology and structure features of the composites were characterized by transmission electron microscopy, selected-area electron diffraction, and energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry. The room-temperature electrical conductivity of the casted composite films was about 0.21 S/cm. Photoresponse of the films were also investigated with respect to wide potential applications of the multifunctional composites. Clear photocurrent switching characteristic during switching on/off of a xenon lamp was observed.

Synthesis of a new hybrid nanocomposite materials, zinc-aluminium-fenoprofen, ZAF was successfully accomplished by self-assembly method with molar ratio of Zn to Al; R=2 at concentration of fenoprofen=0.3 M. As a result of the successful intercalation, the interlayer spacing expanded from 9.8 Å in the zinc-aluminium-layered double hydroxide, ZAL to 20.1 Å in the ZAF hybrid nanocomposite. The FTIR spectra of the ZAF show resemblance peaks of ZAL and fenoprofen indicating the inclusion of the organic compound into the LDH interlamellae. The percentage loading of the guest anion, fenoprofen in ZAL was estimated to be about 63.4% (w/w) calculated from the carbon content.

A nanocomposite multilayer film based on a polyoxometalate Na16[P4W30Mn4 (H2O)2O112]·xH2O (Mn4P4W30) was fabricated by the layer-by-layer self-assembly method. It was characterized by UV/Vis spectra and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The electrochromic and electrocatalytic properties were explored using chronoamperometry (CA), UV/Vis spectroscopy and cyclovoltammetry (CV). The attractable feature is a color change of the film by the reduction of the polyoxometalate at different potentials. The film also exhibits good electrocatalytic activity toward the reduction of IO3-.
