IMPROVED DETECTION OF RARE-EVENT RISK OF A PORTFOLIO WITH U.S. REITs

In measuring the market risks of a portfolio, value-at-risk (VaR) is one of the most commonly used tools. In this paper, the copula-generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity (GARCH) method is used to determine whether it is a better alternative for estimating the VaR of portfolios containing U.S. real estate investment trusts (REITs). The FTSE NAREIT US Real Estate Index, all REITs and the S&P 500 index are used to construct a portfolio. In total, 2800 daily data covering the period of the subprime mortgage crisis of 2007–2009 are used in this paper. We used six constant and two time-varying copula models combined with two GARCH models to form sixteen copula-GARCH models to depict the joint distribution of the two assets in the portfolio. We then computed corresponding one-day VaRs. Compared with the traditional VaR models, our results showed that the time-varying symmetrized Joe–Clayton (SJC) copula model combined with the GARCH Student-t innovation (tvSJC-copula–GARCHt) performed the best, regardless of the market situation. Hence, it could be served as a better way of detecting rare-event risk.

PurposeFarmer exchange rate (FER) is the ratio between a farmer's income and expenditure and is also an indicator of farmers’ welfare. There is little research regarding its use in risk modeling in crop insurance. This study seeks to propose a design for a household margin insurance scheme of the agricultural sector based on FER.Design/methodology/approachThis research employs various risk modeling concepts, i.e. value at risk, loss models and premium calculation, to construct the proposed model. The standard linear, static and time-varying copula models are used to identify the dependency between variables involved in calculating FER.FindingsFirst, FER can be considered as the primary variable for risk modeling in agricultural household margin insurance because it demonstrates farmers’ financial ability. Second, temporal dependence estimated using the time-varying copula can minimize errors, reduce the premium rate and result in a tighter guarantee's level of security.Originality/valueThis research extends the previous similar studies related to the use of index ratio in margin insurance loss modeling. Its authenticity is in the use of FER, which represents the farmers' trading capability. FER determines farmers’ losses by considering two aspects: the farmers’ income rate and their ability to fulfill their life and farming needs. Also, originality exists in the use of the time-varying copulas in identifying the dependence of the indices involved in calculating FER.

After more than a decade of existence, crypto-currencies may now be considered an important class of assets presenting some unique appealing characteristics but also sharing some features with real financial assets. This paper provides a comprehensive statistical analysis of the six most important crypto-currencies from the period 2015–2020. Using daily data we (1) showed that the returns present many of the stylized facts often observed for stock assets, (2) modeled the returns underlying distribution using a semi-parametric mixture model based on the extreme value theory, (3) showed that the returns are weakly autocorrelated and confirmed the presence of long memory as well as short memory in the GARCH volatility, (4) used an econometric approach to compute risk measures, such as the value-at-risk, the expected shortfall, and drawups, (5) found that the crypto-coins’ price trajectories do not contain speculative bubbles and that they move together maintaining the long run equilibrium, and (6) using static and dynamic D-vine pair-copula models, assessed the true dependence structure among the crypto-assets, obtaining robust copula based bivariate dynamic measures of association. The analyses indicate that the strength of dependence among the crypto-currencies has increased over the recent years in the cointegrated crypto-market. The conclusions reached will help investors to manage risk while identifying opportunities for alternative diversified and profitable investments. To complete the analysis we provide a brief discussion on the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the crypto-market by including the first semester of 2020 data.

AbstractIn this paper, we use copula-GARCH models applied to daily data from March 2010 to March 2018 to test the time-varying dependence of the Liv-ex 50, a secondary market fine wine index comprised of the ten most recent vintages of the five Bordeaux First Growths, with a portfolio composed of the six main stock markets (S&P 500, CAC 40, DAX 30, FTSE 100, and Hang Seng). Our results suggest that the Liv-ex 50 underperforms the six stock indexes, but provides diversification benefits in terms of volatility, asymmetry, and extreme events. There is a growing interest in the activities of the crypto market by various stakeholders. These stakeholders generally include investors, entrepreneurs, governments, fund managers, climate activists, institutional managers, employees with surplus funds, and crypto miners. This study aims to investigate the accuracy of the GARCH models for measuring and estimating Value-at-risk (VaR) using the Cryptocurrency index for future investment and managerial decision making. Because of this, the present study uses the top 30 Cryptocurrencies index in terms of Market capitalization excluding stable coins to determine the best GARCH models. Many entrepreneurs, institutional managers, fund managers, and other stakeholders have recently included cryptocurrency in their investment portfolio because of the increase in transactions and high returns growth in the global financial market with its associated high returns and volatility. Information communication technology has paved the way for such activities in the global markets. The daily data frequency was applied because of the availability of the data. The empirical analysis has been carried out for the period from January 2017 to December 2020 for a total of 1461observation. The returns volatility is estimated using SGARCH and EGARCH models. The findings evidenced that, using both normal distribution and Student t distribution, EGARCH provides a better measure and estimate than SGARCH concerning high persistence and volatility. Against this background, the present study also examined Backtesting to estimate Value at Risk. Interestingly, the findings of the available study would provide industry players, practitioners, entrepreneurs, and investors the maximum edge on how to use or measure such variables against others to make investment decisions. Also, the findings would subsequently contribute more insight into academia on the study area.

This paper compares the performance of long-memory models (FIGARCH) with short-memory models (GARCH) in forecasting volatility for calculating value-at-risk (VaR) and expected shortfall (ES) for multiple periods ahead for six emerging markets stock indices. We used daily data from 1999 to 2014 and an adaptation of the Monte Carlo simulation to estimate VaR and ES forecasts for multiple steps ahead (1, 10 and 20 days ), using FIGARCH and GARCH models for four errors distributions. The results suggest that, in general, the FIGARCH models improve the accuracy of forecasts for longer horizons; that the error distribution used may influence the decision about the best model; and that only for FIGARCH models the occurrence of underestimation of the true VaR is less frequent with increasing time horizon. However, the results suggest that rolling sampled estimated FIGARCH parameters change less smoothly over time compared to the GARCH models.

The main objective of risk management is to minimize the potential for losses (risk) arising from unexpected changes in currency rates, credit, commodities and equities. One of the risks faced by companies is market risk (value at risk). This article aims to explain that risk management can be one of them by using derivative products. Derivative transactions is very useful for business people who want to hedge (hedging) against a commodity, which always experience price changes from time to time. There are three strategies that can be used to hedge the balance sheet hedging strategy, operational hedging strategies and contractual hedging strategies. Staregi contractual hedging is a form of protection that is done by forming a contractual hedging instruments in order to provide greater flexibility to managers in managing the potential risks faced by foreign currency. Most of these contractual hedging instrument in the form of derivative products. The management can enhance shareholder value by controlling risk. -Party investors and other interested parties hope that the financial manager is able to identify and manage market risks to be faced. If the value of the firm equals the present value of future cash flows, then risk management can be justified.
