The He I photoelectron spectrum of 1-bromotricyclo[2.2.1.02.6] heptane (1- bromonortricyclene ) is compared with that of the parent alkane . Extensive conjugation between bromine and alkane orbitals in the low ionization-energy range produces a complex band pattern which is adequately described by ab initio valence-electron molecular orbital calculations. Consequently 1-bromo-nortricyclene presents a rare example of an alkyl halide in which the halogen character is neither highly localized nor smeared over a high density of states.

AbstractHyperbolic metamaterials with a unique hyperbolic dispersion relation allow propagating waves with infinitely large wavevectors and a high density of states. Researchers from Korea and Singapore provide a comprehensive review of hyperbolic metamaterials, including artificially structured hyperbolic media and natural hyperbolic materials. They explain key nanophotonic concepts and describe a range of applications for these versatile materials.

The origins of the dramatic effect of some dopants on the thermal conductivity of semiconductors are studied. By analyzing the cases of B-doped 3C-SiC, B-doped diamond, N-doped diamond and a simple linear chain model, small symmetry breaking structural distortions and a high density of states are identified as the key ingredients in resonant phonon scattering.
