Case studies in a physiology course on the autonomic nervous system: design, implementation, and evaluation

The introduction of case studies on the autonomic nervous system in a fourth-semester physiology course unit for Pharmacy students is described in this article. This article considers how these case studies were developed and presents their content. Moreover, it reflects on their implementation and, finally, the reception of such a transformation among the students as well as the tutor's perception. Specifically, the following issues were addressed. First, how were the course unit and, within the course unit, case study components organized? Second, how was the transformation of the course unit from an originally interactive but rather teacher-centered lecture to an interactive course module achieved? Third, how were the case studies structured, what questions were asked, and what were the answers expected from the students; what additional information was provided by the tutor? Fourth, how did the implementation of these case studies work out in the actual course, i.e., how did the tutor guide the students in this interactive session and how did the students tackle the problems? Finally, how was the integration of interactive modules received by the students and what was their learning experience (as assessed by questionnaires) and learning success (as assessed through the final course exam)? Equally, the tutor's perception of this transformation and its implementation is described.

According to the American Tinnitus Association, up to 30 million people suffer from tinnitus and, of those, 12.2 million experience tinnitus severe enough to warrant medical attention. Tinnitus is believed to result from an abnormal auditory perception reflecting dysregulation of the central (CNS) and autonomic nervous system (ANS). However, regulating the ANS has received very little research attention despite the fact that stress is correlated with exacerbation of symptoms and distress. It is believed that when the autonomic nervous system is calm, the presence of severe tinnitus will be less noticeable and individuals can shift their experience from one of severe debilitation to one of acceptance and peace. Three case studies are presented as an initial investigation into the impact heart rate variability biofeedback may have on the subjective perception of tinnitus and the accompanying distress. Further research is needed, but heart rate variability biofeedback may prove to be an effective adjunct intervention for tinnitus.

Introduction: The stroke is a lesion of the Central Nervous System inducing spasticity, caused by a lesion of the upper motor neuron. The presence of spasticity limits the patient in achieving the necessary adjustments for the execution of required functional movements, causing limitations in daily life activities, interfering in our quality of life. Objective: To analyze the influence of the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) in spastic patient consequential of stroke and decrease spasticity resulting of stimulus in the ANS. Method: It is a case study, where the spasticity was analyzed by means of Electromyography record (RMS), Ashowrth Scale modified and goniometry. The intervention consisted in 10 visits by performing Parasympathetic Laringe-Faringe Maneuvers, Plantar Arch and inhibition of Gastrocnemius. Results: The ANS has influence on the muscular activity, seen that there was a reduction of spasticity with decrease of the RMS values, increase in the amplitude of movement quantified by degrees and by means of the Modified Ashworth Scale. Conclusion: However, the mobilization of the autonomic nervous system through parasympathetic maneuvers are effective in decreasing spasticity due to stroke.
