A new approach to normalize myocardial temperature in the open-chest pig model

To prevent unphysiological temperature fluctuations in the myocardium in the open-chest model, we constructed a thermocage. Five pigs under pentobarbital sodium anesthesia underwent repetitive left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery occlusions. Myocardial temperature was measured without any thoracic temperature-controlling device and in the presence of either a heating lamp or the thermocage. Without any thoracic temperature-controlling device, the temperature at 5-mm myocardial depth was 1.28 ± 0.33°C below the intra-abdominal temperature ( P < 0.05). During a proximal 5-min LAD occlusion, myocardial temperature decreased by 1.86 ± 1.02°C in the ischemic area ( P < 0.05). Both the heating lamp and the thermocage abolished the difference between intra-abdominal and myocardial temperatures and prevented the decrease in myocardial temperature during ischemia. Only the thermocage minimized myocardial temperature fluctuations due to air currents and prevented epicardial exsiccation. We conclude that either a thermocage or a heating lamp may be used to normalize myocardial temperature in the open-chest pig model. However, the thermocage is superior to the lamp in minimizing temperature fluctuations and preventing epicardial exsiccation.

SummaryIntestinal mucosa heparin (IMH) and beef lung heparin (BLH) were infused into dogs subjected to myocardial ischemia by intermittent coronary artery occlusions. The IMH was from a mixture of beef, sheep, and pig intestinal mucosa. Initial control occlusion and recovery was followed by a second occlusion with 60,000 units of IMH or BLH added. Electrocardiographic S-T segment elevations (ST) were measured acutely. There were no significant differences in ST in non-ischemic myocardium before occlusions or with occlusions. In ischemic myocardium, IMH significantly lowered control ST 84% in amount (t = 6.1 p <0.00005), and 76% in number (t = 11.6 p <0.00001). BLH lowered control ST a significant, lesser, 36% in amount (t = 3.6 p <0.008), and 35% in number (t = 3.2 p <0.01). The difference between IMH and BLH in ischemic myocardium was a significant 48% in amount (t = 4.0 p <0.0007), and 41% in number (t = 2.0 p <0.06). Myocardial adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels were assayed after 90 min. ATP levels were 31% higher in both ischemic and non-ischemic myocardium in IMH-treated dogs than in BLH- treated. It was concluded that IMH and BLH are functionally different, and IMH was significantly more effective.

The phenomenon of economic growth is studied by economists and statisticians in various aspects for a long time. Economic theory is devoted to assessing factors of growth in the tradition of R. Solow, R. Barrow, W. Easterly and others. During the last quarter of the century, however, the institutionalists, namely D. North, D. Wallis, B. Weingast as well as D. Acemoglu and J. Robinson, have shown the complexity of the problem of development on the part of socioeconomic and political institutions. As a result, solving the problem of how economic growth affects inequality between countries has proved extremely difficult. The modern world is very diverse in terms of development level, and the article offers a new approach to the formation of the idea of stylized facts using cluster analysis. The existing statistics allows to estimate on a unified basis the level of GDP production by 174 countries of the world for 1992—2016. The article presents a structured picture of the world: the distribution of countries in seven clusters, different in levels of development. During the period under review, there was a strong per capita GDP growth in PPP in the middle of the distribution, poverty in various countries declined markedly. At the same time, in 1992—2016, the difference increased not only between rich and poor groups of countries, but also between clusters.

AbstractIn this article we present a new approach to words of the type zigzag, chitchat, etc. in English. Such words form a formal (phonological) and functional (semantic) pattern in English. We argue that this pattern should be analysed in a construction-based approach, which has clear advantages over other approaches, e.g. analyses involving extragrammaticality or a synchronically productive reduplication process. We propose to extend the construction-based approach beyond its original scope (syntactic constructions) to words that may even no longer be morphologically complex. Finally, we make a tentative suggestion about how the difference between productive and unproductive patterns could be captured in the construction-based approach.

Awake mice (22.6--32.6 g) were anesthetized intravenously during head-out body plethysmography. One minute after pentobarbital sodium anesthesia, tidal volume had fallen from 0.28 +/- 0.04 to 0.14 +/- 0.02 ml and frequency from 181 +/- 20 to 142 +/- 8. Functional residual capacity (FRC) decreased by 0.10 +/- 0.02 ml. Expiratory flow-volume curves were linear, highly repeatable, and submaximal over substantial portions of expiration in awake and anesthetized mice; and expiration was interrupted at substantial flows that abruptly fell to and crossed zero as inspiration interrupted relaxed expiration. FRC is maintained at a higher level in awake mice due to a higher tidal volume and frequency coupled with expiratory braking (persistent inspiratory muscle activity or increased glottal resistance). In anesthetized mice, the absence of braking, coupled with reductions in tidal volume and frequency and a prolonged expiratory period, leads to FRCs that approach relaxation volume (Vr). An equation in derived to express the difference between FRC and Vr in terms of the portion of tidal volume expired without braking, the slope of the linear portion of the expiratory flow-volume curve expressed as V/V, the time fraction of one respiratory cycle spent in unbraked expiration, and respiratory frequency.

The effect of anesthetic drugs on the localization of adult worms in albino mice was compared. The animals with 56 days of infection were anesthetized with pentobarbital sodium, ether or chlorophorm. Perfusion was carried out immediately after, recovering the worms and classifying them in relation to their localization on the liver or portal vein and the mesenteric veins. Our results showed that pentobarbital sodium produced a greater displacement of the worms to the liver (89%) than ether (76%) and chlorophorm (34%) did, when compared to the control group (22%). The difference between pentobarbital sodium and ether was significant (p < 0.05). We suggest that anesthetic drugs may not be used in studies on the distribution of adult worms in several hosts.

Background. Arrhythmia is one of the causes of death in severe coronary artery disease patients who also suffered from cancer. Our research aims to compare the incidence of arrhythmia between severe coronary artery disease patient with and without new-onset tumor. Methodology. We enrolled 79 patients (December 2019–December 2020) with severe coronary artery disease in this study, and 40 of them were complicated with new-onset tumor. The details of all subjects were thoroughly obtained; the laboratory tests were implemented including creatinine before coronary angiography. The appraisal of the severity of coronary artery disease was applied by Gensini score. The cardiac inspection includes UCG, 12-lead ECG, and Holter monitor. Results. Among them, there were 40 patients in the experimental group and 39 patients in the control group. The difference at the baseline between the two sets of figures was not statistically significant ( P > 0.05 ). The incidence of arrhythmia between the two groups was statistically significant ( P < 0.05 ). Conclusions. The incidence of arrhythmia in severe coronary artery disease patients who were complicated with new-onset tumor was higher than that in patients with severe coronary artery disease alone, and attention should be paid to arrhythmia before tumor treatment.

Abstract Background:To explore the application value of thromboelastic graph (TEG) in the assessment of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI).Results: 1.R time (min), K time (min) and LY30(%) in the STEMI group were lower than those in the NSTEMI group, and the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05). The Angle(°) and MA values in the STEMI group were higher than those in the NSTEMI group, and the difference between the two groups was statistically significant (P<0.05). 2.R time(min), K time(min) and LY30(%) gradually decreased with the increase of the number of coronary artery lesions, while Angle(°) and MA value(mm) gradually increased. 3. R time (min), K time (min) and LY30(%) gradually decreased with the aggravation of coronary artery lesions, while Angle(°) and MA value (mm) gradually increased. 4. R time (min), K time (min) and LY30(%) were negatively correlated with Gensini score (r=-0.456, -0.418, -0.483, P<0.001).Angle(°) and MA value(mm) were positively correlated with Gensini score (r=0.531, 0.569, P<0.001).Conclusion: Thromboelastic graph (TEG) can be used as an effective indicator for predicting the condition of patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), evaluating the severity of coronary artery disease, and guiding clinical treatment.
