The modal identification of large and dynamically complex structures often requires a multi-point excitation. Sine sweep excitation runs are applied when it is necessary to concentrate more energy on each line of the frequency spectrum. The conventional estimation of FRFs from multi-point excitation requires uncorrelated excitation signals. In case of multi-point (correlated) sine sweep excitation, several sweep runs with altered excitation force patterns have to be performed to estimate the FRFs. An alternative way, which offers several advantages, is to process each sine sweep run separately. The paper first describes the conventional method for FRF estimation in case of multi-point excitation, followed by two alternative methods applicable in case of correlated excitation signals. Both methods generate a virtual single-point excitation from a single run with multi-point excitation. In the first method, an arbitrary structural point is defined as a virtual driving point. This approach requires a correction of the modal masses obtained from modal analysis. The second method utilizes the equality of complex power to generate virtual FRFs along with a single virtual driving point. The computation of FRFs and the modal identification using virtual single-point excitation are explained. It is shown that the correct set of modal parameters can be identified. The application of the methods is elucidated by an illustrative analytical example. It could be shown that the separate evaluation of symmetric and anti-symmetric multi-point excitation runs yield obviously better and more reliable results compared to the conventional method. In addition, the modal analysis of the separate symmetric and anti-symmetric excitation runs is easier, since the stabilization diagrams are easier to interpret. The described methods were successfully applied during the Ground Vibration Tests on Airbus A380 and delivered excellent results. The methods are highly advantageous and may thus be established as a new standard procedure for testing aerospace structures.

This work presents an experimental modal analysis of an aircraft wing prototype, designed by the Aerodesign team of the University of Brasilia, and performs a ground vibration testing of the prototype. The dynamic response data were acquired using the software LabVIEW, and the modal parameters were identified through the EasyMod toolbox. The modal parameters are characterised for the first seven vibration modes of the structure, with the firsts two being suspension modes of vibration. The effect of small changes in the experimental procedure on the identified modal parameters is discussed. It was observed that the use of an excitation signal as a logarithmic sine sweep and with a frequency range of excitation between 2 to 150 Hz resulted in less noise and more accurate measurement of the structure’s response. Results for different modal identification methods were verified using the Modal Assurance Criterion (MAC), and good correlation was achieved.

Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) has become the preferred method for trenchless pipeline installations. Drilling pressures must be limited and a “no-drill zone” determined to avoid exceeding the strength of surrounding soil and rock. The currently accepted industry method of calculating hydraulic fracturing limiting pressure with application of an arbitrary safety factor contains several assumptions that are often not applicable to specific ground conditions. There is also no standard procedure for safety factor determination, resulting in detrimental impacts on drilling operations. This paper provides an analysis of the standard methods and proposes two alternative analytical models to more accurately determine the hydraulic fracture point and acceptable drilling pressure. These alternative methods provide greater understanding of the interaction between the drilling pressures and the surrounding ground strength properties. This allows for more accurate determination of horizontal directional drilling limitations. A comparison is presented to determine the differences in characteristics and assumptions for each model. The impact of specific soil properties and factors is investigated by means of a sensitivity analysis to determine the most critical soil information for each model.

Experimental characterization and validation of skin components in aircraft entails multiple evaluations (structural, aerodynamic, acoustic, etc.) and expensive campaigns. They require different rigs and equipment to perform the necessary tests. Two of the main dynamic characterizations include the energy absorption under impact forcing and the identification of modal parameters through the vibration response under any broadband excitation, which also includes impacts. This work exploits the response of a stiffened aircraft composite panel submitted to a multi-impact excitation, which is intended for impact and energy absorption analysis. Based on the high stiffness of composite materials, the study worked under the assumption that the global response to the multi-impact excitation is linear with small strains, neglecting the nonlinear behavior produced by local damage generation. Then, modal identification could be performed. The vibration after the impact was measured by high-speed 3D digital image correlation and employed for full-field operational modal analysis. Multiple modes were characterized in a wide spectrum, exploiting the advantages of the full-field noninvasive techniques. These results described a consistent modal behavior of the panel along with good indicators of mode separation given by the auto modal assurance criterion (Auto-MAC). Hence, it illustrates the possibility of performing these dynamic characterizations in a single test, offering additional information while reducing time and investment during the validation of these structures.

A method of modal analysis by a mass-weighted proper orthogonal decomposition for multi-degree-of-freedom and distributed-parameter systems of arbitrary mass distribution is outlined. The method involves reduced-order modeling of the system mass distribution so that the discretized mass matrix dimension matches the number of sensed quantities, and hence the dimension of the response ensemble and correlation matrix. In this case, the linear interpolation of unsensed displacements is used to reduce the size of the mass matrix. The idea is applied to the modal identification of a mass-spring system and an exponential rod.

Bayesian operational modal analysis and modal strain energy are employed for determining the damage and looseness of bolted joints in beam structures under ambient excitation. With this ambient modal identification technique, mode shapes of a damaged beam structure with loosened bolted connections are obtained based on Bayesian theory. Then, the corresponding modal strain energy can be calculated based on the mode shapes. The modal strain energy of the structure with loosened bolted connections is compared with the theoretical one without bolted joints to define a damage index. This approach uses vibration-based nondestructive testing of locations and looseness of bolted joints in beam structures with different boundary conditions by first obtaining modal parameters from ambient vibration data. The damage index is then used to identify locations and looseness of bolted joints in beam structures with single or multiple bolted joints. Furthermore, the comparison between damage indexes due to different looseness levels of bolted connections demonstrates a qualitatively proportional relationship.

Abstract. This paper deals with the description and assessment of uncertainties in land use data derived from Remote Sensing observations, in the context of hydrological studies. Land use is a categorical regionalised variable reporting the main socio-economic role each location has, where the role is inferred from the pattern of occupation of land. The properties of this pattern that are relevant to hydrological processes have to be known with some accuracy in order to obtain reliable results; hence, uncertainty in land use data may lead to uncertainty in model predictions. There are two main uncertainties surrounding land use data, positional and categorical. The first one is briefly addressed and the second one is explored in more depth, including the factors that influence it. We (1) argue that the conventional method used to assess categorical uncertainty, the confusion matrix, is insufficient to propagate uncertainty through distributed hydrologic models; (2) report some alternative methods to tackle this and other insufficiencies; (3) stress the role of metadata as a more reliable means to assess the degree of distrust with which these data should be used; and (4) suggest some practical recommendations.
