An eight-year-old male Pyrenean mountain dog was presented with a comminuted fracture of the right calcaneus following motor vehicle trauma. The fracture was stabilised with a plate-rod construct, using the String of Pearls locking plate system and an intramedullary pin. Healing was uncomplicated.

Abstract Objectives The aim of this study was to describe a case of an intra-articular olecranon fracture in a lamb repaired using a String of Pearls locking plate system, intramedullary pin and lag screws. Materials and Methods A 6-month-old, 20 kg, purebred male Merino lamb was referred for evaluation of a non-weight bearing lameness of the left thoracic limb of unknown duration. Orthogonal radiographic assessment of the left elbow revealed a complete, closed, long sagittal oblique, minimally displaced fracture of the olecranon involving the ulnar shaft at the level of the radial physis, extending proximally through the distal semilunar notch to the mid-body of the olecranon. The fracture was repaired using a String of Pearls locking plate system spanning both the proximal radius and olecranon, an intramedullary pin in the ulna and lag screws across the fracture line. Results Orthogonal radiographic assessment of the left elbow at 8 weeks postoperatively revealed implant quiescence with radiographic union of the fracture site. Long-term telephone follow-up at 3 and 6 months postoperatively found the patient was no longer restricted in activity, with free access to the field, and was not displaying an overt lameness. Clinical Significance The authors describe a novel method to treat an intra-articular in a lamb olecranon fracture in a lamb using a String of Pearls locking plate system, intramedullary pin and lag screws.

Abstract Objective The aim of this study was to describe the successful surgical treatment of a complicated mandibular fracture with a 3.5 mm string-of-pearls (SOP) locking plate in a 5-month-old Appaloosa filly presenting with neurological signs. Study Design This is a case report. Results The neurological signs were due to severe head trauma and stabilized with medical treatment. Financial concerns initially prevented advanced imaging; radiographs identified a mandibular symphysis fracture, a fracture of the left vertical ramus that originated at the junction between the horizontal and vertical ramus and extended toward the coronoid process and rostral maxillary fractures. Following intra-dental wiring of the symphysis fracture, a lateral malocclusion developed. Computed tomography additionally identified fractures of the right wing of the basisphenoid bone, right zygomatic arch, left paracondylar process and the lateral body of the mandible. The vertical ramus fracture was repaired utilizing a 20-hole 3.5 mm SOP plate contoured to the ventral aspect of the angle of the mandible. A scaled (1:4) three-dimensional printed model aided pre- and intra-operative surgical planning. The filly was comfortable and eating well at the 4-week recheck. Radiographs showed good callus formation at the maxilla, healing of the mandibular symphysis and ramus. Just prior to the 10-week recheck, the filly suffered severe enterocolitis and was euthanatized. Conclusion The locking function of the SOP plate provided adequate stability for the fracture to heal without the expense of locking screws. The three-dimensional printed model aided in navigation of the complex fracture without the availability of fluoroscopy.

SummaryObjectives: To describe the use of the Fixin locking plate system for stifle arthrodesis in dogs and to retrospectively report the clinical and radiographic outcomes in six cases.[uni2028]Materials and methods: Medical records of dogs that had arthrodesis with the Fixin locking plate system were reviewed. For each patient, data pertaining to signalment and implant used were recorded. Plate series and thickness, number of screws placed, number of cortices engaged, and screw diameters were also recorded. The outcome was determined from clinical and radiographic followups. Radiographic outcomes assessed included the measurement of the postoperative femoral-tibial angle in the sagittal plane.Results: Six dogs met the inclusion criteria for the study. Mean body weight was 13 kg (range: 3 - 34 kg). Radiographic follow-up (mean: 32 weeks, range: 3 - 52 weeks) was available for all dogs. In one case, an intra-operative complication occurred. In another case, a tibial fracture occurred 20 days after surgery. All arthrodeses healed and no implant complication was detected although all cases had mechanical lameness.Clinical significance: Stifle arthrodesis can be performed successfully using a Fixin locking plate system.
