This study aims to emphasize the importance of developing the scientific communication system in line with the successive technological developments. Thus, this theoretical study deals with the concept of scientific communication in regard to various related points. These points are: the elements of communication, the types and forms of scientific communication, the concept of social networks, the emergence and development of social networks, the types of social networks. It also considers the most popular social networking sites, the use of social networks in scientific communication, knowledge of the advantages of using social networks in scientific communication, the obstacles to scientific communication within social networks, ways to overcome these obstacles, the role of free access in developing the process of scientific communication in the digital environment, the role of social networks and the free access usag in supporting scientific communication during the pandemic of Covid-19. Finally, this study found a variety of social networking services that support the process of scientific communication, which must be used, and to overcome any obstacles that may result from the use of these networks.

The research aimed to study and analyze the best global University institutional repositories, which were selected by the search engines and the Spanish website Metrix. A descriptive approach has been used to carry out the research (survey) and a deliberate sample has been taken (ten university repositories) from a community of 500 repositories mentioned in the directory of free access repositories (open Dora), in terms of content, types of digital content management systems, number of recordings, language used and methods of storage and retrieval. The study found that 70% of university institutional repositories used the open source Dspace system. Press articles have been ranked first with a percentage of 100%, while theses came in second rank with regard to the substantive content of the repositories. Moreover, it is found that the position of the repository does not depend on the number of existing recordings as much as it depends on the quality, usage and the links of these recordings.

A stock reduction analysis (SRA) of bigeye croaker Micropogonias megalops was performed based on commercial catch data. SRA solutions were restricted to a 2011 bigeye croaker stock biomass estimate of 14,412 t. The viable solution indicated a reduction in stock of 73.6% from 1983 to 2020 with an initial biomass of 22,186 t. In addition, a possible effect of hyperstability of the stock was evaluated by applying different versions of the Cobb–Douglas catch function. The most probable function based on a multi-model selection procedure was the one wherein the catch does not depend on biomass and is directly proportional to the applied fishing effort of small boats (~7 m) and vessels (~24 m). This situation suggests that in a free access regime, fishing can deplete the resource until it collapses, without observing a significant reduction in its catches until the event is very close.

Today, up to hundreds of RGB and W-LEDs are positioned in a vehicle’s interior context and are able to be individually controlled in intensity, color and sequence. However, which kind of illumination distracts or supports car occupants and how to define such a modern illumination system is still under discussion and unknown. For that, first a definition for an in-vehicle lighting system is introduced. Second, a globally distributed study was performed based on a free-access online survey to investigate in-vehicle lighting for visual signaling within 10 colors, eight positions and six dynamic patterns. In total, 238 participants from China and Europe rated color preferences, color moods, light-position preferences, differences between manual and autonomous driving and also different meanings for dynamic lighting patterns. Out of these, three strong significant (p < 0.05) color preference groups were identified with a polarized, accepted or merged character. For the important driving-signaling mood attention, we found a significant hue dependency for Europeans which was missing within the Chinese participants. In addition, we identified that light positioned at the door and foot area was globally favored. Furthermore, we evaluated qualitative results: men are primarily focusing on fast-forward, whereas women paid more attention on practical light usage. These findings conclude the need for a higher lighting-car-occupant adaptation in the future grounded by deeper in-vehicle human factors research to achieve a higher satisfaction level. In interdisciplinary terms, our findings might also be helpful for interior building or general modern cockpit designs for trains or airplanes.

European Union Member States are called upon to meet internationally proposed environmental goals. This study is based, in particular, on the recommendation of the European Union (EU), which encourages Member States to pursue effective policies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHGs) emissions, including through appropriate changes in the behavioral habits of citizens. In this respect, among the main sectors involved, transport and mobility should certainly be mentioned. National institutions should be adequately involved in order to achieve the objectives set; in this regard, universities must certainly be considered for their educational value. These latter, for instance, could commit to improving the environmental performance of the mobility of their commuter students (to a not insignificant extent), since commuting modes are often the cause of high CO2 emissions; indeed, they still largely involve the use of internal combustion engines based on fossil fuels. In this paper, the effectiveness of a smartphone-app-based method to encourage commuter students to adopt more sustainable transport modes is evaluated. In more detail, starting from a statistical analysis of the status quo of mobility habits of a sample of students at the University of Palermo (Italy), an improvement of current habits toward a more sustainable path is encouraged through a new application (specifically created for this purpose) installed on students’ smartphones. Then, the daily and annual distances traveled by commuters with the new mobility modes are calculated, and the resulting savings in energy and CO2 emissions are estimated. Finally, it is proposed that the reduced emissions could be converted into energy-efficiency credits that the University could use to enter the emission trading system (ETS), here contextualized within the Italian “TEE” (“Energy Efficiency Credits”) scheme, while the benefits for students participating in the program could consist of reduced fees and free access to university services. The results obtained show the feasibility of the proposal. This approach can be considered a useful model that could be adopted by any other public institutions—not only universities—to facilitate their path toward decarbonization.

Accurate and efficiently updated information on color-coated steel sheet (CCSS) roof materials in urban areas is of great significance for understanding the potential impact, challenges, and issues of these materials on urban sustainable development, human health, and the environment. Thanks to the development of Earth observation technologies, remote sensing (RS) provides abundant data to identify and map CCSS materials with different colors in urban areas. However, existing studies are still quite challenging with regards to the data collection and processing costs, particularly in wide geographical areas. Combining free access high-resolution RS data and a cloud computing platform, i.e., Sentinel-2A/B data sets and Google Earth Engine (GEE), this study aims at CCSS material identification and mapping. Specifically, six novel spectral indexes that use Sentinel-2A/B MSIL2A data are proposed for blue and red CCSS material identification, namely the normalized difference blue building index (NDBBI), the normalized difference red building index NDRBI, the enhanced blue building index (EBBI), the enhanced red building index (ERBI), the logical blue building index (LBBI) and the logical red building index (LRBI). These indexes are qualitatively and quantitatively evaluated on a very large number of urban sites all over the P.R. China and compared with the state-of-the-art redness and blueness indexes (RI and BI, respectively). The results demonstrate that the proposed indexes, specifically the LRBI and LBBI, are highly effective in visual evaluation, clearly detecting and discriminating blue and red CCSS covers from other urban materials. Results show that urban areas from the northern parts of P.R. China have larger proportions of blue and red CCSS materials, and areas of blue and red CCSS material buildings are positively correlated with population and urban size at the provincial level across China.

Eating in the absence of hunger (EAH), a measure of children's propensity to eat beyond satiety in the presence of highly palatable food, has been associated with childhood obesity and later binge eating behavior. The EAH task is typically conducted in a research laboratory setting, which is resource intensive and lacks ecological validity. Assessing EAH in a group classroom setting is feasible and may be a more efficient alternative, but the validity of the classroom assessment against the traditional individually-administered paradigm has not been tested. The objective of this study was to compare EAH measured in a classroom setting to the one-on-one version of the paradigm in a sample of Head Start preschoolers. Children (n = 35) from three classrooms completed both classroom and individual EAH tasks in a random, counterbalanced order. In the group condition, children sat with peers at their classroom lunch tables; in the individual condition, children met individually with a researcher in a separate area near their classroom. In both conditions, following a meal, children were provided free access to generous portions of six snack foods (~750 kcal) and a selection of toys for 7 min. Snacks were pre- and post-weighed to calculate intake. Parents completed a survey of their child's eating behaviors, and child height and weight were measured. Paired t-tests and intraclass correlation coefficients were used to compare energy intake between conditions, and correlations between EAH intake and child BMI, eating behaviors, and parent feeding practices were examined to evaluate concurrent validity. Average intake was 63.0 ± 50.4 kcal in the classroom setting and 53.7 ± 44.6 in the individual setting, with no significant difference between settings. The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.57, indicating moderate agreement between conditions. Overall, the EAH protocol appears to perform similarly in classroom and individual settings, suggesting the classroom protocol is a valid alternative. Future studies should further examine the role of age, sex, and weight status on eating behavior measurement paradigms.

Abstract Background: Leprosy reactions (LR) are severe episodes of intense activation of the host inflammatory response, of uncertain etiology, today the leading cause of permanent nerve damage in leprosy patients. Several genetic and non-genetic risk factors for LR have been described; however, there are limited attempts to combine this information in order to estimate the risk of a leprosy patient to develop LR. Here we present an artificial intelligence (AI)-based system able to estimate risk of LR using clinical, demographic and genetic data.Methods: The study includes four datasets from different regions of Brazil, totalizing 1,450 leprosy patients followed prospectively for at least two years to assess the occurrence of LR. Data mining using WEKA software was performed following a two-step protocol to select the variables included in the AI system, based on Bayesian Networks and developed using the NETICA software.Results: Analysis of the complete database resulted in a system able to estimate LR-risk with 82.7% accuracy, 79.3% sensitivity, and 86.2% specificity. When using only databases for which host genetic information associated with LR was included, the performance increased to up to 87.7% accuracy, 85.7% sensitivity, and 89.4% specificity.Conclusion: We produced an easy-to-use, online, free-access system that allows the identification of leprosy patients at high risk of developing LR. Risk assessment of LR for individual patients may detect candidates close monitoring, with potential positive impact upon the prevention of permanent disabilities, the quality of life of the patients, as well as upon leprosy control programs.

Abstract Background: Ad libitum (AD) feeding is crucial to profitable commercial broiler chicken production. However, it partly disrupts muscle development, causing myopathies like white striping in broilers’ breast meat. For this reason, this study investigated the impacts of intermittent feeding (IF) and fasting strategies as potential alternatives to AD feeding. A total of 384 one-day-old broilers were randomly allotted into 4 groups - ad libitum, 1h-IF group (4 times/day, 1 hour each time), 1.5h-IF (4 times/day, 1.5hrs each time), and acute fasting (1-day acute fasting, 6-days free access to feed). Feed intake, weight gain, muscle structure, differential genes, and protein expressions were assessed in the broiler breast muscles. Results: IF and fasting significantly reduced ectopic fat deposit and muscle fiber size (p < 0.05). Notably, 1.5h-IF promoted PAX7+ satellite cell proliferation supporting muscle growth and repair activities in fast-growth broiler chickens. Consistently, the restricted regimens downregulated the collagen protein synthesis of skeletal muscle-specific E3 ubiquitin ligases (TRIM63 and MAFBX) in 42 – days old breast muscle samples (p < 0.05), especially in the 1.5h-IF group. Compared to AD-fed birds, 1.5h-IF and fasting feeding significantly decreased white striping scores in the breast meat muscle (p < 0.05). ConclusionChronic IF or acute fasting improved muscle health of broiler chickens without significant compromise on growth rate and feed efficiency compared to AD feeding. Therefore, this study presents potential feeding frequencies relevant for optimal growth pace while alleviating the occurrence of myopathic pathophysiology in broiler chickens.
