In northern South America, an extensive tropical lowland runs 5,000 km from the Atlantic coast to the foot of the Andes. The slope is gentle until about 500 m where the eastern Andes rise abruptly. The lowland supports Amazonia, which is the most extensive tract of tropical rainforest on the planet. Most of its boundaries are well defined, but the boundary between Amazonia and the forest of the eastern slopes of the Andes has not been clearly defined. To determine for avifauna whether Amazonia is restricted to the lowland of northern South America or whether it also extends up into the eastern slopes of the Andes, different types of data were used. The results indicate that Amazonia may be restricted to the lowland that extends from the Atlantic coast to the foot of the Andes, up to about 500 m. Consequently, the number of bird species strictly endemic to Amazonia would be 290. Comparison with the distribution of vegetation on the eastern slopes of the Andes also suggests that Amazonia as a biome may be restricted to the lowland that extends from the Atlantic coast to the foot of the Andes, up to about 500 m.

Serpophaga hypoleuca P.L. Sclater & Salvin, 1866, is a bird species distributed in northern South America, where it mainly inhabits shrubs on river islands and occasionally large river shores. Its distribution is not well known in Colombia where current records show the species present south of the Amazonas department and locally in Arauca and Vichada. We present a new locality in Colombia along the Guaviare River, in San José del Guaviare, which expands the known distribution of this species in Colombia, filling an information gap for the Guaviare region.

I report an aberrant record of Hoatzin Opisthocomus hoazin in the Andes of Lara, Venezuela. During field work in July 2011 in the Yacambú National Park, in an area of premontane cloud forest, I observed and photographed an individual of O. hoazin in El Blanquito reservoir. This is the first record of the species in Lara State, and apparently the highest record of the species in northern South America.

A new species of Piper L. (Piperaceae) from the eastern slopes of the Andes in Colombia and Peru, P. callejasii W. Trujillo & M. A. Jaram., is described and illustrated, and morphological comparisons with similar species are discussed. Piper callejasii is distinguished by its stigmas being sessile, rather than on a long style as in four similar species. Its conservation status is suggested to be Endangered.

AbstractThe genus Dietta Sharp, 1876 was previously known in the Neotropics only by D. sharpi Matthews, 1887 from Panama. This paper describes a new subgenus of Dietta, Mesodiettasubgen. nov., occurring in Middle America and northern South America west of the Andes, composed of D. (M.) sharpi Matthews and eight additional new species: D. (M.) esmeraldassp. nov., D. (M.) latidenssp. nov., D. (M.) lobidenssp. nov., D. (M.) mesoamericasp. nov., D. (M.) mexicanussp. nov., D. (M.) puntarenassp. nov., D. (M.) rectispinasp. nov., and D. (M). uncinatasp. nov. Additionally, seven new species of Dietta, subgenus Dietta, are described: D. (D.) argentinensissp. nov., D. (D.) atlanticasp. nov., D. (D.) geraisensissp. nov., D. (D.) guianasp. nov., D. (D.) huanucosp. nov., D. (D.) pauloensissp. nov., and D.(D.) sucumbiossp. nov.

A review of the phylogenetic relationships of the subfamilies of Simaroubaceae is presented and the distribution patterns of the American genera are discussed. Engler's six subfamilies are evaluated and the three subfamilies represented in the Americas and their included genera are discussed in detail. The eight American genera fall into three broad distributional categories: widely distributed throughout the neotropics, limited to northern South America, and disjunct between the West Indies, Central America and Mexico and southern South America. These distributions are discussed and interpreted.

Based on the morphological study of ca. 470 specimens and geographical studies, we here propose the recognition of six morphotypes within the South American Pteridium esculentum (= P. arachnoideum s.l., or P. aquilinum var. arachnoideum sensu Tryon, or P. esculentum subsp. arachnoideum sensu Thomson). Three of them are widely distributed and well-defined, and we regard them as subspecies of P. esculentum: P. esculentum subsp. arachnoideum s. str., P. esculentum subsp. campestre, comb. et stat. nov., and P. esculentum subsp. gryphus. The other three are more rare. One of these is a pedomorphic form of P. esculentum subsp. arachnoideum, which we name as P. esculentum subsp. arachnoideum var. paedomorficum, nom. nov. The other is a glabrous form of P. esculentum subsp. gryphus, which we name P. esculentum subsp. gryphus var. harpianum, var. nov. The third is a putative hybrid between P. esculentum subsp. arachnoideum and P. esculentum subsp. campestre. All six taxa are keyed, described, illustrated, mapped, and discussed. Pteridium esculentum subsp. arachnoideum s. str. forms an arc of distribution from eastern, to southern, to western South America (but not occurring west of the Andes); Pteridium esculentum subsp. campestre forms an arc of distribution from northeastern Brazil to northern South America (not occurring west of the Andes either); and P. esculentum subsp. gryphus forms an arc of distribution from western to northern South America (occurring also west of the Andes and in Galapagos). This one is morphologically more similar to the Australasian P. esculentum subsp. esculentum.

Micrurus isozonus is a triadal coralsnake occurring in northern Venezuela, eastern Colombia, southern Guyana, and in the extreme northern Brazil. In this paper we firstly publish vouchers to Brazil, and report additional records from three localities in the mountainous region of Taião and Apiaú, state of Roraima. We also extend its known range to the Trans-Andean region in the Atlantic coast of northern South America, municipality of Cartagena at the Caribbean coast of Colombia. Additionally, we present meristic and morphometric data, including the species sintypes.

River basins and river characteristics are controlled in part by their tectonic setting, in part by climate, and increasingly by human activity. River basins are defined by the tectonic and topographic features of a continent, which determine the general pattern of water drainage. If a major river drains to the ocean, its mouth is usually fixed by some enduring geologic structure, such as a graben, a downwarp, or a suture between two crustal blocks. The largest river basins constitute drainage areas of extensive low-lying portions of Earth’s crust, often involving tectonic downwarps. The magnitude of river flow is determined by the balance between precipitation and evaporation, summed over the drainage area. Seasonality of flow and water storage within any basin are determined by the seasonality of precipitation in excess of evaporation, modified in some regions by water stored in snow packs and released by melting, and by water stored in wetlands, lakes, and reservoirs. Increasingly the flows of rivers are influenced by human land use and engineering works, including dams, but in South America these anthropogenic influences are generally less intense and widespread than in North America, Europe, and much of Asia. Thus the major rivers of South America can be viewed in the context of global and regional tectonics and climatology. For reference, figure 5.1 outlines South America’s three largest river basins—the Orinoco, Amazon, and Paraguay-Paraná systems—while figure 5.2 shows the locations of rivers referred to in the text against a background of the continent’s density of population per square kilometer. The geologic history of South America has bequeathed to the continent a number of structural elements that are relevant to the form and behavior of its three major river systems. These structural elements are (1) the Andes; (2) a series of foreland basins, approximately 500 km wide immediately east of the Andes and extending southward from the mouth of the Orinoco to the Chaco-Paraná basin, where the crust is depressed by the weight of the Andes and the sediment derived from the mountains; (3) the Guiana and Brazilian shields reflecting Precambrian cratons and orogenic belts of mostly crystalline metamorphic rocks, partly covered with flat-lying sedimentary rocks and deeply weathered regolith; and (4) the Central Amazon Basin, a large cratonic downwarp with some graben structures dating back to early Paleozoic time, which runs generally east-west between the two shields, connecting the foreland basins to the west with a graben that localizes the Amazon estuary at the Atlantic coast.
