The self-assembly of cyclohexylamine dithiocarbamate (C6DTC) on gold (Au) and gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) was studied electrochemically using cyclic voltammetry (CV). Cyclic voltammetry was used to study the systemFe(CN)63-/Fe(CN)64-at the electrode surface of (C6DTC/Au) and (C6DTC/AuNPs). The application of the resulting chemically modified surface as a selective sensor for cysteine, among other amino acids, was investigated. Linear oxidative desorption technique was used to characterize the modified electrode that consists of the self-assembled monolayer of cyclohexylamine dithiocarbamate on gold nanoparticles deposited on Au electrode (C6DTC/AuNPs/Au). The results showed an enhancement in the oxidation peak of cysteine on the modified electrode and hence a greater sensitivity.

During the last number of years a variety of crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA) processes based on semicrystalline block copolymers have been developed to prepare a number of different nanomorphologies in solution (micelles). We herein present a convenient synthetic methodology combining: (i) The anionic polymerization of 2-vinylpyridine initiated by organolithium functionalized phosphane initiators; (ii) the cationic polymerization of iminophosphoranes initiated by –PR2Cl2; and (iii) a macromolecular nucleophilic substitution step, to prepare the novel block copolymers poly(bistrifluoroethoxy phosphazene)-b-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PTFEP-b-P2VP), having semicrystalline PTFEP core forming blocks. The self-assembly of these materials in mixtures of THF (tetrahydrofuran) and 2-propanol (selective solvent to P2VP), lead to a variety of cylindrical micelles of different lengths depending on the amount of 2-propanol added. We demonstrated that the crystallization of the PTFEP at the core of the micelles is the main factor controlling the self-assembly processes. The presence of pyridinyl moieties at the corona of the micelles was exploited to stabilize gold nanoparticles (AuNPs).

The pH-responsive self-assembly of a zwitterionic amphiphile was expanded to the recovery of gold (Au) nanoparticles. Multilayered lamellae were incorporated into the nanoparticles. Redispersion of nanoparticles was achieved by the transition of self-assembly based on pH.

The preparation and properties of tert-dodecanethiol protected gold nanoparticles amenable to very rapid surface functionalization by associative mechanism is described. The new material can be easily prepared by controlling the reaction time, because only a limited but enough number of tert-dodecanethiol to stabilize the gold clusters is bond to the surface until about an hour. Accordingly, it can be isolated as a solid and handled much like the highly stabilized Brust-Schiffrin analogues, but reacted very rapidly with any molecular species containing one or multiple functional groups such as thiol, disulfide, pyridine, etc., These characteristics are ideal for the preparation of a variety of new organic–inorganic hybrid nanomaterials by coordinative self-assembly. This possibility was illustrated using meso-tetra(4-pyridyl)porphyrin, which promptly bonded to the reactive protected gold nanoparticles generating a solid that can be grown as thin films with layer-by-layer control on a suitably modified surface.

The electrochemical behavior of viologen self-assembled monolayer has been investigated with QCM, which has been known as ng order mass detector. The self-assembly process of viologen was monitored using resonant frequency (ΔF) and resonant resistance (R). The QCM measurements indicated a mass adsorption for viologen assembling on the gold surface with a frequency change of about 300, 135 Hz and its surface coverage (Γ) was calculated to be 5.02 × 10-9 and 1.64 × 10-9 mol/cm2. A reversible redox process was also observed and analyzed with an ionic interaction at the viologen/solution interface using ΔF.
