Well-defined nanosheet-assembled (BiOCl)x(ZnO)1−xnanoflowers were synthesized by a solvothermal method. It was found that ZnO nanoparticles were anchored on the flower-like BiOCl nanostructures, as demonstrated by varying the initial compositions of the Bi precursor and the volume ratios of mixed solvents (ethylene glycol to water). The as-prepared (BiOCl)0.6(ZnO)0.4nanocomposites showed enhanced photocatalytic activity toward rhodamine B degradation under ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. And the photocatalytic mechanism was discussed in detail.

Quasi-monodispersed SnO2nanocrystal microspheres were successfully fabricated by a solvothermal route with the assistance of poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG, Mn=6000) template. The as-prepared SnO2microspheres were well characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, and FT-IR. The photocatalytic activity for Rh B on the SnO2microspheres was also investigated under UV irradiation. The experimental results show that the quasi-monodispersed SnO2microspheres with diameter about 1.3µm are self-assembled by large quantity of crystallites less than 10 nm. The SnO2microspheres have a good photocatalytic property, as evidenced by the result that over 95% of the Rh B decomposed over the SnO2nanocrystal microspheres within 180 min. The high degradation rate of rhodamine B (Rh B) on the as-synthesized SnO2nanocrystal microspheres can be attributed to the small size of crystals.

Flower-like Bi2WO6 were successfully synthesized using the solvothermal method at different temperatures and characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, and DRS. We also investigated the photocatalytic activity of Bi2WO6 for the decomposition of rhodamine B under visible light irradiation. From XRD and SEM results, the reaction temperature has significant effects on the morphologies of the samples. From DRS results, Bi2WO6 samples displayed the absorption spectrum up to the visible region and then they showed the high photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, as a comparison with TiO2-P25.

Tungsten trioxide (WO3) is known as a visible light responsive photocatalyst, but its photocatalytic activity is relatively low, as compared to that of anatase titanium dioxide (TiO2). To enhance the activity, high specific surface areas are necessary. In this study, WO3particles with a hierarchical architecture, which was assemblies of spherical particles 20 – 30 nm in diameter, were synthesized by the solvothermal method. The hierarchical WO3particles had high specific surface areas and their photocatalytic activity was found to be 2.5 times higher than that of the commercial WO3.

We report the facial synthesis of BiVO4crystals with different morphologies by the solvothermal and hydrothermal process. The phase structure and morphology as-synthesized samples were characterized by XRD, FE-SEM, and UV-vis DRS spectroscopy. We also investigated the photocatalytic activity of BiVO4for the decomposition of rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. The results showed that oliver-like BiVO4was obtained when using the mixed solvent of ethylene glycol and water while starflower-like BiVO4was obtained using the mixed solvent of ethylene glycol monomethyl ether and water. The hydrothermal evolution process the BiVO4product with a rod-like morphology. Oliver-like BiVO4with pure monoclinic scheelite phase and high specific surface area exhibits efficient photodegradation of RhB (k = 7.82x10-3min-1).

TiO2hollow microspheres were synthesized by a facile solvothermal method. The prepared samples were characterized by the XRD, SEM, TEM, BET and UV-vis. The results showed that the TiO2hollow microspheres offered an enhanced photocatalytic activity due to the multiple reflections of the UV light within the inner hollow structure.
