The basic operation principle of elastic support/dry friction damper in rotor system was introduced and the unbalance response of the rotor with elastic support/dry friction damper was analyzed theoretically. Based on the previous structure using an electromagnet as actuator, an active elastic support/dry friction damper using piezoelectric ceramic actuator was designed and its effectiveness of reducing rotor vibration when rotor traverses its critical speed and blade-out event happened was experimentally verified. The experimental results show that the active elastic support/dry friction damper with piezoelectric ceramic actuator can significantly reduce vibration in rotor system; the vibration amplitude of the rotor in critical speed region decreased more than 2 times, and the active damper can protect the rotor when a blade-out event happened, so the rotor can traverse the critical speed and shut down smoothly. In addition, the structure is much simpler than the previous, the weight was reduced by half and the power consumption was only 5 W.

To reduce the excessive vibration of a high-speed rotor system as it passes its critical speed, a viscoelastic-friction damper(VEFD) are introduced into the support. Its stiffness factor is analyzed. Results show, the stiffness factor decreases with the cone angle increasing among 55-80 degrees monotonically. And it is the same trend when the stiffness of the damping material ring decreases. In the case of friction coefficient among 0.1-0.5, the stiffness factor increases monotonically. So adopted a proper structure, suitably chosen the above parameters and the axial stiffness of the outer-ring, the damper can present appropriate stiffness.

Abstract Based on rotor dynamics theory, a two-disk flexible rotor system representing an aero-engine with freely supported structure was established with commercial software ANSYS. The physical model of the two-disk rotor system was then integrated to the multidisciplinary design optimization software ISIGHT and the maximum vibration amplitudes experienced by the two disks when crossing the first critical speed were optimized using a multi-island genetic algorithm (MIGA). The optimization objective was to minimize the vibration amplitudes of the two disks when crossing the first critical speed. The position of disk 1 was selected as the optimization variable. The optimum position of disk 1 was obtained at the specified constraint that the variation of the first critical speed could not exceed the range of ±10 %. In order to validate the performance of the optimization design, the proof-of-transient experiments were conducted based on a high-speed flexible two-disk rotor system. Experimental results indicated that the maximum vibration amplitude of disk 1 when crossing the first critical speed declined by 60.9 % and the maximum vibration amplitude of disk 2 fell by 63.48 % after optimization. The optimization method found the optimum rotor positions of the flexible rotor system which resulted in minimum vibration amplitudes.

In this paper, a rotordynamic experiment on a compressor rotor system is presented and the feasibility of gas foil bearings with inhomogeneous bump foils is verified. A push–pull device is designed to obtain the stiffness curve and the nominal clearance of foil bearings. Operating points and dynamic coefficients of the rotor system at each rotating speed are predicted. In rotordynamic analysis, an alternative model of the impeller is proposed and the critical speed is predicted by employing the finite element method, in which the dynamic coefficients of inhomogeneous foil bearings are taken into account. Compared with the experimental result, the accuracy of the prediction for the critical speed is verified to be about 14% error. Two sets of foil bearings with 22 and 41 μm nominal clearance are manufactured and tested. Test results indicate that the vibration amplitude can be greatly reduced by diminishing the bearing clearance. When foil bearings with 22 μm clearance are used, the high-order harmonic frequencies of rotor vibration are significantly inhibited, and the amplitude of the rotating frequency is obviously restricted. Thus, the foil bearing with inhomogeneous bump foils tested in this paper can meet the speed requirement of the compressor when the nominal clearance is set at 22 μm.

A one degree of freedom nonlinear dynamics model of self-excited vibration induced by dry-friction was built firstly, the numerical method was taken to study the impacts of structure parameters on self-excited vibration. The calculation result shows that the variation of stiffness can change the vibration amplitude and frequency of the self-excited vibration, but can not eliminate it, Along with the increase of system damping the self-excite vibration has the weakened trend and there a ritical damping, when damping is greater than it the self-excite vibration will be disappeared.

Friction dampers are installed underneath the blade platforms to improve the reliability. Because of centrifugal forces the dampers are pressed onto the platforms. Due to dry friction and the relative motion between blades and dampers, energy is dissipated, which results in a reduction of blade vibration amplitudes. The geometry of the contact is in many cases like a Hertzian line contact. A three-dimensional motion of the blades results in a two-dimensional motion of one contact line of the friction dampers in the contact plane. An experiment with one friction damper between two blades is used to verify the two-dimensional contact model including microslip. By optimizing the friction dampers masses, the best damping effects are obtained. Finally, different methods are shown to calculate the envelope of a three-dimensional response of a detuned bladed disk assembly (V84.3-4th-stage turbine blade) with friction dampers.

Abstract Typical turbofan engine-support-structure systems having a high thrust-to-weight ratio are light, and the structure primarily comprises a plate and shells. The local vibration response of the support structure is excessively large when different frequency loads are applied. A structural vibration response control method based on dry friction damping is proposed to control the excessive vibration response. A dry friction damper with dynamic suction was designed to enhance the damping characteristics of the rotor supporting structure system in the wide frequency domain, without sacrificing the dynamic stiffness of the structure. The system is designed to effectively control the vibration response of the supporting structure at the working-speed frequency. Through theoretical modeling and simulation analyses, the influence of friction contact and damper structure characteristics on the damping effect is described quantitatively. Furthermore, the design idea and the damping process of the supporting structure are described. The calculation results show that the contact friction of the dry friction damper can consume the vibration energy of the supporting frame. A reasonable design of the contact characteristics and geometric configuration parameters of the damper can further optimize the vibration-reduction effect, and thereby improve the vibration response control design of the supporting structure system of aeroengines.
