Gastric pneumatosis is the presence of air within the wall of the stomach. It represents a spectrum of conditions ranging from benign disease to septic shock and death. Etiopathologically, it can be classified into emphysematous gastritis or gastric emphysema (GE). Along with hepatoportal venous gas (HPVG), it was considered as an ominous radiological sign and warranted an emergent surgical exploration; however, with widespread use of computerized tomographic (CT) scan, an increasing number of benign causes of GE and HPVG have been reported in the literature, where patients can be managed by noninvasive and conservative measures. We hereby describe a case where recurrent episodes of vomiting led to development of GE and HPVG and the patient was managed successfully by conservative measures.

Localized Cystic Disease of the Kidney (LCDK) is an extremely rare benign disease in pediatric population. Although its management is conservative and generally requires no treatment, the unfamiliarity with the disease can expose such patients to misdiagnosis as renal malignancies or uncertainty for proper treatment. We report such a case in an infant and review the current literature.

Abstract Acinetobacter baumannii is a rare but emerging cause of fulminant community-acquired pneumonia (CAP-AB). We describe a patient from a rural area who developed acute respiratory distress syndrome and septic shock. We describe risk factors and characteristics of this syndrome and review published cases of CAP-AB from North America.

AbstractA case of schwannoma of the larynx is reported. It originated from the left ventricular fold submucosally and extended to the left side of the neck outside the larynx near the carotid sheath. It presented with stridor. CT scan showed a mass in the larynx which had fractured the left thyroid lamina and extended into the neck. An external surgical approach was used and the mass was removed in toto without laryngofissure. Left vocal fold paralysis was noticed during laryngoscopy at the time of the operation. The possibility that the tumour originated from the recurrent laryngeal nerve is discussed. Histopathological photomicrographs and a CT scan are presented.

We present a large hydatid cyst located midline and posterior to prostatic gland and seminal vesicles in an asymptomatic patient. Computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a large retrovesical mass and the transrectal ultrasonography idetified a degenerated hydatid cyst with “ball of wool’’ appearance. Although extremely rare, hydatid disease should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of pelvic particularly retrovesical midline masses.
