Since the image feature points are always gathered at the range with significant intensity change, such as textured portions or edges of an image, which can be detected by the state-of-the-art intensity based point-detectors, there is nearly no point in the areas of low textured detected by classical interest-point detectors. In this paper we describe a novel algorithm based on affine transform and graph cut for interest point detecting and matching from wide baseline image pairs with weakly textured object. The detection and matching mechanism can be separated into three steps: firstly, the information on the large textureless areas will be enhanced by adding textures through the proposed texture synthesis algorithm TSIQ. Secondly, the initial interest-point set is detected by classical interest-point detectors. Finally, graph cuts are used to find the globally optimal set of matching points on stereo pairs. The efficacy of the proposed algorithm is verified by three kinds of experiments, that is, the influence of point detecting from synthetic texture with different texture sample, the stability under the different geometric transformations, and the performance to improve the quasi-dense matching algorithm, respectively.

The intensity and structure of simulated tropical cyclones (TCs) are known to be sensitive to the planetary boundary layer (PBL) parameterization in numerical weather prediction models. In this paper, we use an idealized version of the Hurricane Weather Research and Forecast system (HWRF) with constant sea-surface temperature (SST) to examine how the configuration of the PBL scheme used in the operational HWRF affects TC intensity change (including rapid intensification) and structure. The configuration changes explored in this study include disabling non-local vertical mixing, changing the coefficients in the stability functions for momentum and heat, and directly modifying the Prandtl number (Pr), which controls the ratio of momentum to heat and moisture exchange in the PBL. Relative to the control simulation, disabling non-local mixing produced a ~15% larger storm that intensified more gradually, while changing the coefficient values used in the stability functions had little effect. Varying Pr within the PBL had the greatest impact, with the largest Pr (~1.6 versus ~0.8) associated with more rapid intensification (~38 versus 29 m s−1 per day) but a 5–10 m s−1 weaker intensity after the initial period of strengthening. This seemingly paradoxical result is likely due to a decrease in the radius of maximum wind (~15 versus 20 km), but smaller enthalpy fluxes, in simulated storms with larger Pr. These results underscore the importance of measuring the vertical eddy diffusivities of momentum, heat, and moisture under high-wind, open-ocean conditions to reduce uncertainty in Pr in the TC PBL.

This paper proposes a novel invariant local descriptor, a combination of gradient histograms with contrast intensity (CGCI), for image matching and object recognition. Considering the different contributions of sub-regions inside a local interest region to an interest point, we divide the local interest region around the interest point into two main sub-regions: an inner region and a peripheral region. Then we describe the divided regions with gradient histogram information for the inner region and contrast intensity information for the peripheral region respectively. The contrast intensity information is defined as intensity difference between an interest point and other pixels in the local region. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed descriptor performs better than SIFT and its variants PCA-SIFT and SURF with various optical and geometric transformations. It also has better matching efficiency than SIFT and its variants PCA-SIFT and SURF, and has the potential to be used in a variety of realtime applications.

<p>On the 7th of February 2021, a large rock-ice avalanche triggered a debris flow in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand, India, resulting in over 200 dead or missing and widespread infrastructure damage. The rock-ice avalanche originated from a steep, glacierized north-facing slope with a history of instability, most recently a 2016 ice avalanche. In this work, we assess whether the slope exhibited any precursory displacement prior to collapse. We evaluate monthly slope motion over the 2015 and 2021 period through feature tracking of high-resolution optical satellite imagery from Sentinel-2 (10 m Ground Sampling Distance) and PlanetScope (3-4 m Ground Sampling Distance). Assessing slope displacement of the underlying rock is complicated by the presence of glaciers over a portion of the collapse area, which display surface displacements due to internal ice deformation. We overcome this through tracking the motion over ice-free portions of the slide area, and evaluating the spatial pattern of velocity changes in glaciated areas. Preliminary results show that the rock-ice avalanche bloc slipped over 10 m in the 5 years prior to collapse, with particularly rapid slip occurring in the summer of 2017 and 2018. These results provide insight into the precursory conditions of the deadly rock-ice avalanche, and highlight the potential of high-resolution optical satellite image feature tracking for monitoring the stability of high-risk slopes.</p>

The melt-extrusion transesterification of ethylene/vinylacetate (EVA) copolymer to ethylene/vinylalcohol (EVAL) copolymers has been monitored by on-line near infrared (NIR) spectroscopy. A total of 60 NIR spectra were measured within 37 minutes after the initial addition of octanol (reagent) and catalyst (sodium methoxide) at the exit of the extruder by use of a fibre-optic probe. The most significant intensity change is observed for a band at 7089 cm−1 due to the first overtone of an OH stretching mode of the EVAL copolymers. We can monitor the progress of the reaction by plotting the peak intensity at 7089 cm−1 only. A principal component analysis (PCA) was carried out for the series of NIR spectra in the 7300–6900 cm−1 region. A score plot of PCA factor 1 is almost identical with the plot of the peak intensity at 7089 cm−1. Calibration models for predicting the vinyl acetate content in EVA copolymers have been developed by use of partial least squares (PLS) regression. The correlation coefficient and standard error of prediction are 0.96 and 0.85%, respectively, indicating that the described technique can be used to monitor the transesterification reaction.
