Ubiquitous Computing is moving the interaction away from the human-computer paradigm and towards the creation of smart environments that users and things, from the IoT perspective, interact with. User modeling and adaptation is consistently present having the human user as a constant but pervasive interaction introduces the need for context incorporation towards context-aware smart environments. The current article discusses both aspects of the user modeling and adaptation as well as context awareness and incorporation into the smart home domain. Users are modeled as fuzzy personas and these models are semantically related. Context information is collected via sensors and corresponds to various aspects of the pervasive interaction such as temperature and humidity, but also smart city sensors and services. This context information enhances the smart home environment via the incorporation of user defined home rules. Semantic Web technologies support the knowledge representation of this ecosystem while the overall architecture has been experimentally verified using input from the SmartSantander smart city and applying it to the SandS smart home within FIRE and FIWARE frameworks.

In smart environments, context-aware service sense various kinds of context information and reacts automatically to adapt to changing circumstances. These adaptions may lead to context changes which trigger other services elsewhere in the environment and thus produce cascading reactions. Conflict adaptions or unexpected side effects may exist in this process. This article focuses on service conflicts related to frustrations in service execution and violations of the service's objective. A petri net-based approach is proposed to model and simulate context changes as well as services execution, and a conflicts discovery mechanism was built to detect potential conflicts. The case study of smart home scenarios shows how the method helps locate conflicts caused by different services, validating the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

One of the critical situations facing the society across the globe is the problem of elderly homecare services (EHS) due to the aggravation of the society coupled with diseases and limited social resources. This problem has been typically dealt with by manual assistance from caregivers and/or family members. The emerging Ambience Intelligence (AmI) technology suggests itself to be of great potential for EHS applications, owing to its strength in constructing a pervasive computing environment that is sensitive and responsive to the presence of human users. The key challenge of AmI implementation lies in context awareness, namely how to align with the specific decision making scenarios of particular EHS applications. This paper proposes a context-aware information model in a smart home to tackle the EHS problem. Mainly, rough set theory is applied to construct user activity models for recognizing various activities of daily living (ADLs) based on the sensor platform constructed in a smart home environment. Subsequently, issues of case comprehension and homecare services are also discussed. A case study in the smart home environment is presented. Initial findings from the case study suggest the importance of the research problem, as well as the feasibility and potential of the proposed framework.

Some of the most important features of future IT systems will come from the current research of Semantic Web technologies and distributed systems. Following this idea we set out to implement a middleware solution that builds upon the latest developments of research activity into Internet of Things and, more generally, context-aware systems. These directions where selected because they currently are the main drivers of the research into the applications of semantic technologies. Our focus was mainly on the aspects that we considered to be overlooked by other proposed semantic middleware solutions, such as the support of asynchronous, event based communication and ontology management in distributed systems. The developed middleware was used to build a test system in order to prove its advantages over similar systems that rely on currently used technologies.
