Purpose. To evaluate the refractive and the quality of vision outcomes of toric IOL implantation in patients with low astigmatism. Design. Prospective study of single-arm. Methods. Patients with corneal astigmatism range from 0,75 D to 1,5 D and cataract that underwent cataract surgery with toric IOL. The measurements were performed preoperatively and 6 weeks after the surgery. Patients were evaluated for visual acuity with and without correction, contrast sensitivity, static and dynamic refraction, and quality of life questionnaire. Pre- and postoperative values were compared and their variations were evaluated for linear correlation. Results. 21 eyes of 21 patients. Postoperative mean uncorrected visual acuity was 0.80±0.19, and the best corrected visual acuity was 0.97±0.15. p<0.001 compared to preoperative values. The average postoperative refractive cylinder was -0.34±0.39. The questionnaire’s total value before and after surgery was, respectively, 43.20±15.76 and 79.70±10.11 (p<0.001). The correlation coefficients between the values of the questionnaire variation and the UCVA, BCVA, and CS variation were, respectively, 0.548 (p=0.005), 0.508 (p=0.009), and 0.409 (p=0.033). Conclusion. Patients with low astigmatism who underwent phacoemulsification with toric IOL implantation experienced significant decrease in refractive astigmatism and improvement in their quality of life.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the functioning, symptoms, and quality of life (QoL) of patients with breast or colon cancer before and after their first-cycle (FC) chemotherapy. Design: One-group pretest/posttest design. Method: The study utilized the standardized Arabic-translated Quality of Life Questionnaire Version 3 from the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer in measuring the functioning, symptoms, and QoL of 120 Saudi patients diagnosed with breast or colon cancer. Dependent t test was used in analyzing the presence of significant differences in mean scores before and after chemotherapy with periods ranging from 14 days to 21 days following the treatment protocol. Results: The findings revealed significant differences in the functioning, symptoms, and QoL among patients with breast or colon cancer before and after FC chemotherapy ( p < .001). Baseline scores showed higher physical, role, emotional, cognitive, and social functioning; lesser symptoms; lower financial difficulties; and better overall global health status compared to post-FC chemotherapy. Conclusion: Assessing the QoL of patients with breast or colon cancer undergoing FC chemotherapy is essential to establish a holistic care plan in supporting and alleviating the unfavorable effects of chemotherapy and implement patient-centered interventions that aid in the enhancement of their overall QoL.

Introduction. Obesity is increasing worldwide and in Lebanon with a negative impact on the quality of life. The primary objective of this study is to measure the quality of life in obese subjects before and after bariatric surgery, depending on age, sex, and degree of weight loss. A secondary objective is to determine the impact of bariatric surgery on comorbidities associated with obesity. Materials and methods. Patients undergoing laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy for BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2 between August 2016 and April 2017 were included. Participants completed the Moorehead-Ardelt Quality of Life Questionnaire II (MA II) prior to operation and one year after. Statistical analysis was carried out using SPSS statistics version 20.0. Results. 75 patients participated in the study. The majority were women (75%), and the mean age was 36.3 years. The mean weight loss was 36.57 kg (16–76). Initially, the total MA II score was −0.33 ± 0.93. Postoperatively, it increased to 1.68 ± 0.62 (p≤0.001). All MA II parameters improved after surgery (p≤0.001), but this improvement was independent of age and sex. Improvement in self-esteem, physical activity, work performance, and sexual pleasure was influenced by the degree of weight loss (p≤0.001). All comorbidities associated with obesity regressed significantly after sleeve gastrectomy (p<0.05) with the exception of gastroesophageal reflux and varicose veins of the lower limbs. Conclusion. Sleeve gastrectomy improves quality of life and allows reduction of comorbidities.

OBJECTIVE: this prospective study aimed to assess the quality of life related to health (QLRH) of patients with lung cancer after chemotherapy treatment. METHOD: The QLRH was assessed using the questionnaires Quality-of-Life Questionnaire-Core 30 (QLQ-C30) and Lung Cancer Module (LC13), version 3.0. RESULTS: the sample was made up of 11 women and 19 men, with an average age of 68 years (51-87 years). After the chemotherapy treatment, the authors observed a clinically-relevant improvement in general quality of life, as well as in the symptoms of dyspnea, insomnia, hemoptysis, cough, thoracic pain, pain in the arm/shoulder, and financial difficulty. There was a worsening on the functional scale which assesses role performance and symptoms of fatigue, nausea and vomiting, sensory neuropathy, pain in other parts, constipation, loss of appetite and alopecia. CONCLUSION: although the patients have an improvement of their QLRH and symptoms related to the lung cancer after the chemotherapy treatment, there was a worsening of the symptoms which resulted from the toxicity of the chemotherapy medications.

Purpose. To evaluate the changes in the quality of life of patients with thyroid eye disease after different methods of orbital decompression. Materials and methods. The study included 24 patients (37 orbits) with thyroid eye disease, aged 41.6 20.6 (from 20 to 79 years), 18 women and 6 men. The patients were divided into two groups. The first group included 12 patients (19 orbits) who underwent orbital fat decompression. The second group included 12 patients (18 orbits) who underwent endoscopic endonasal bony orbital decompression. The Graves ophthalmopathy quality of life questionnaire (GO-QOL) was completed before surgery, and 3 and 6 months after it. Outcome analysis included also the assessment of visual acuity, proptosis, eyelid retraction, and palpebral fissure height. Results. The GO-QOL visual function scores in both groups did not change significantly in 3 and in 6 months after orbital decompression (p 0.05): in the first group, before and after 6 months, scores were 69.27 20.02 and 68.96 18.44, in the second group 53.13 29.13 and 57.81 23.56, respectively. An improvement in the GO-QOL visual function estimation was observed in those patients whose visual acuity improved after surgery. The GO-QOL facial appearance scores significantly improved 3 months after surgery, and continued to increase up to 6 months: in the first group, facial appearance scores improved from 23.96 23.01 to 48.42 25.56 (p = 0.004), in the second group from 47.92 21.04 to 66.15 23.15 (p = 0.037). Conclusions. Orbital decompression significantly improves the quality of life of patients with thyroid eye disease, this is primarily associated with an improvement in facial appearance.

The present study examined the effects of a functional high-intensity suspension training (FunctionalHIIT) on resting blood pressure, psychological well-being as well as on upper body and core strength and cardiorespiratory fitness in moderately trained participants. Twenty healthy, moderately trained adults (10 males and 10 females; age: 36.2 ± 11.1 years, BMI: 23.9 ± 3.7) were randomly assigned to a FunctionalHIIT training group or passive control group (CON). FunctionalHIIT performed 16 sessions (2× week for eight weeks, 30 min per session), whereas CON maintained their habitual lifestyle using a physical activity log. Before and after FunctionalHIIT intervention, resting blood pressure and quality of life (short version of the WHO Quality of Life questionnaire (WHOQOL-BREF)) were assessed. Furthermore, maximum-repetition (leg press, chest press, pulldown, back extension) and trunk muscle strength (Bourban test) as well as cardiorespiratory fitness (Vameval test), were measured before and after the intervention. Both systolic and diastolic blood pressure and WHOQOL-BREF did not change significantly but both showed moderate training-induced effects (0.62 < standardized mean difference (SMD) < 0.82). Significant improvements in the FunctionalHIIT group were evident on leg press (p < 0.01), chest press (p < 0.05), and left side Bourban test (p < 0.05). Cardiorespiratory fitness did not reveal any time effects or time × group interactions. The present study revealed that eight weeks of FunctionalHIIT represents a potent stimulus to improve health-related parameters in young adults, whereas FunctionalHIIT was not sufficient to improve cardiorespiratory fitness.

Background: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a disease with an increasing incidence due to the general aging of the population that decreases the patient’s quality of life. This work aims to study whether selective cut optical filters improve the AMD patient’s quality of life. Methods: Prospective and longitudinal study in 79 patients. Visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, and the line differences in the Colenbrander test were measured. Patients answered The National Eye Institute 25-Item Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI VFQ-25), which measures the quality of life related to vision before and after using cut optical filters. Results: There was an improvement of 5.99 points (3.7–8.3) in NEI VFQ-25 after wearing filters. This improvement was 4.0 points for 450-nm filters and 12.7 points for 511-nm filters. For patients with visual acuity (VA) < 0.25, results of NEI VFQ-25 increased by 10.11 points (1.19–19.02) and for patients with late AMDs, results increased by 5.33 points (1.31–9.35). Conclusions: Selective filters improve the quality of life of patients with AMD. The success rate in the fitting of filters is better for those with VA lower than 0.25 and those with late or advanced AMD.
