This work aims to investigate the fretting fatigue life and failure mode of steel Q235B plates in single-lap bolted joints. Ten specimens were prepared and tested to fit theS-Ncurve. SEM (scanning electron microscope) was then employed to observe fatigue crack surfaces and identify crack initiation, crack propagation, and transient fracture zones. Moreover, a FEM model was established to simulate the stress and displacement fields. The normal contact stress, tangential contact stress, and relative slipping displacement at the critical fretting zone were used to calculate FFD values and assess fretting fatigue crack initiation sites, which were in good agreement with SEM observations. Experimental results confirmed the fretting fatigue failure mode for these specimens. It was found that the crack initiation resulted from wear regions at the contact surfaces between plates, and fretting fatigue cracks occurred at a certain distance away from hole edges. The proposed FFD-Nrelationship is an alternative approach to evaluate fretting fatigue life of steel plates in bolted joints.

In the Al alloy A2024-T3 extruded material, a rod-like structure is generated parallel to the extrusion direction. In this study, the effects of rod-like structures on fatigue crack initiation and growth behavior were comprehensively investigated. Two types of specimens were used in a fatigue experiment, in which the direction of the load stress amplitude was parallel (specimen P) and perpendicular (specimen V) to the rod-like structure. Based on the experimental and analytical results, the following findings were obtained regarding the fatigue life, location of crack initiation, and fatigue crack growth behavior. Because the fatigue life of specimen P was longer than that of specimen V, it is inferred that the rod-like structure significantly affects the fatigue life. In specimen P, fatigue cracks were generated from the grain boundaries of the Al matrix. By contrast, in specimen V, cracks were generated from the Cu–Mg-based intermetallic compound in the Al matrix. In specimen P, fatigue cracks were more likely to propagate across the rod-like structure, which decreased the fatigue crack growth rate. In specimen V, fatigue cracks did not propagate across the rod-like structure; instead, they propagated through the Al matrix. Therefore, the fatigue crack growth resistance of specimen V was lower than that of specimen P. The relationship between the fatigue crack growth rate and the modified linear elastic fracture mechanics parameter could be used to predict the S–N curve (stress amplitude vs. fatigue life) and fatigue crack growth behavior. The predicted results agreed well with the experimental results.

For conventional materials with solid solution, fatigue damage is often related to microplasticity and is largely sensitive to microstructure at different scales concerning dislocations, grains and textures. The present study focuses on slip bands activity and fatigue crack initiation with special attention on the influence of the size, the morphology and the crystal orientation of grains and their neighbours. The local configurations which favour - or prevent - crack initiation are not completely identified. In this work, the identification and the analysis of several crack initiation sites are performed using Scanning Electron Microscopy and Electron Back-Scattered Diffraction. Crystal plasticity finite elements simulation is employed to evaluate local microplasticity at the scale of the grains. One of the originality of this work is the creation of 3D meshes of polycrystalline aggregates corresponding to zones where fatigue cracks have been observed. 3D data obtained by serial-sectioning are used to reconstruct actual microstructure. The role of the plastic slip activity as a driving force for fatigue crack initiation is discussed according to the comparison between experimental observations and simulations. The approach is applied to 316L type austenitic stainless steels under low-cycle fatigue loading.

AbstractThe study has established the main regularities of a fatigue failure of offshore gas steel pipes installed using S-lay and J-lay methods.We have numerically analyzed the influence of preliminary deformation on the fatigue life of 09Mn2Si steel at different amplitudes of cyclic loading. The results have revealed the regularities of formation and development of a fatigue crack in 17Mn1Si steel after 40 years of underground operation. The quantitative analysis describes the regularities of occurrence and growth of fatigue cracks in the presence of a stress concentration.

Fatigue Property of an Extruded AZ61 Magnesium Alloy with the Processing Layer Introduced by Machining was Investigated. Rotating Bending Fatigue Tests were Carried out with the Specimen with and without the Processing Layer. According to Results of the Fatigue Tests, Fatigue Life Significantly Increased by Introducing the Processing Layer to the Specimen Surface. Fatigue Crack Initiation and Propagation Behaviors were Observed by Replication Technique during the Fatigue Test. Fatigue Crack Initiation Life of the Specimen with the Processing Layer was Slightly Longer than that of the Specimen without the Processing Layer. Higher Fatigue Crack Growth Resistance was also Observed when the Fatigue Crack was Growing in the Processing Layer in the Specimen with the Processing Layer. the Longer Fatigue Life Observed in the Fatigue Test in the Specimen with the Processing Layer could be Mainly due to the Higher Crack Growth Resistance. it is Speculated that the Fatigue Strength can be Controlled by Change in Condition of Machining Process. it could be Effective way in Industry to Improved Fatigue Strength only by the Cutting Process without Additional Surface Treatment Process.

The calculation of average material contact pressure to rolls base on mathematical theory of rolling process given by Karman equation was solved by many authors. The solutions reported by authors are used simplifications for solution of Karman equation. The simplifications are based on two cases for approximation of the circular arch: (a) by polygonal curve and (b) by parabola. The contribution of the present paper for solution of two-dimensional differential equation of rolling is based on description of the circular arch by equation of a circle. The new term relative stress as nondimensional variable was defined. The result from derived mathematical models can be calculated following variables: normal contact stress distribution, front and back tensions, angle of neutral point, coefficient of the arm of rolling force, rolling force, and rolling torque during rolling process. Laboratory cold rolled experiment of CuZn30 brass material was performed. Work hardening during brass processing was calculated. Comparison of theoretical values of normal contact stress with values of normal contact stress obtained from cold rolling experiment was performed. The calculations were not concluded with roll flattening.
