Abstract To address the difficult problems in the study of the effect of average strain on fatigue life under low-cycle fatigue loads, the effect of average strain on the low-cycle fatigue life of materials under different strain cycle ratios was discussed based on the framework of damage mechanics and its irreversible thermodynamics. By introducing the Ramberg-Osgood cyclic constitutive equation, a new low-cycle fatigue life prediction method based on the intrinsic damage dissipation theory considering average strain was proposed, which revealed the correlation between low-cycle fatigue strain life , material properties, and average strain. Through the analysis of the low-cycle fatigue test data of five different metal materials, the model parameters of the corresponding materials were obtained. The calculation results indicate that the proposed life prediction method is in good agreement with the test, and a reasonable characterization of the low-cycle fatigue life under the influence of average strain is realized. Comparing calculations with three typical low-cycle fatigue life prediction models, the new method is within two times the error band, and the prediction effect is significantly better than the existing models, which is more suitable for low-cycle fatigue life prediction. The low-cycle fatigue life prediction of different cyclic strain ratios based on the critical region intrinsic damage dissipation power method provides a new idea for the research of low-cycle fatigue life prediction of metallic materials.

Introduction. Welded joints in large-sized metal structures (e.g., in the structures of ship hulls) subject to low-cycle fatigue are considered. The characteristic appearance of soft interlayers, which are significantly plastically deformed under working loads, was noted. Deformation of the metal structure with damage, especially in the form of cracks, reduces the strength and reliability of structural elements and joints. Pre-deformation negatively affects plasticity; therefore, much depends on the residual plasticity of the cracking material. At the same time, with a decrease in residual plasticity, such an important reliability indicator as the resistance of the material to crack propagation — the fracture toughness – decreases. The paper is devoted to the development of a model that includes analytical dependences for assessing the crack resistance of metal structures and their welded joints with soft interlayers according to the crack resistance limit for all crack sizes.Materials and Methods. The theory and methods of linear mechanics of materials destruction, structural-mechanical approach are used. The calculation results were analyzed and compared to the experimental data and other analytical solutions. The numerical experiment was performed for the ferrite-perlite steel grades of 10, 50, 22K, St3sp, etc., widely used in industry, as well as for alloy steels hardened to medium and high strength of 30KhGSA, 37KhN3A, etc. Results. Analytical dependences are obtained for calculating the relative crack resistance limit according to three main known mechanical characteristics of the state of the material of the soft interlayer of the welded joint.Discussion and Conclusions. The results obtained can be used to assess the crack resistance of pre-deformed structural elements and welded joints (including those with soft interlayers) operating under a transverse load. The results of experimental data and analytical calculations are shown in dimensionless form, which enables to obtain invariant results with respect to the fracture toughness limit.

In biomedical engineering, laser powder bed fusion is an advanced manufacturing technology, which enables, for example, the production of patient-customized implants with complex geometries. Ti-6Al-7Nb shows promising improvements, especially regarding biocompatibility, compared with other titanium alloys. The biocompatible features are investigated employing cytocompatibility and antibacterial examinations on Al2O3-blasted and untreated surfaces. The mechanical properties of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-7Nb are evaluated in as-built and heat-treated conditions. Recrystallization annealing (925 °C for 4 h), β annealing (1050 °C for 2 h), as well as stress relieving (600 °C for 4 h) are applied. For microstructural investigation, scanning and transmission electron microscopy are performed. The different microstructures and the mechanical properties are compared. Mechanical behavior is determined based on quasi-static tensile tests and strain-controlled low cycle fatigue tests with total strain amplitudes εA of 0.35%, 0.5%, and 0.8%. The as-built and stress-relieved conditions meet the mechanical demands for the tensile properties of the international standard ISO 5832-11. Based on the Coffin–Manson–Basquin relation, fatigue strength and ductility coefficients, as well as exponents, are determined to examine fatigue life for the different conditions. The stress-relieved condition exhibits, overall, the best properties regarding monotonic tensile and cyclic fatigue behavior.
