Background. Poor nutritional status affects the normal process of the wound healing stage. There is limited evidence regarding the association between malnutrition and wound healing in Ethiopia. Objective. To assess the association between nutritional status and wound healing progress among adult individuals who had undergone abdominal surgery at Public Hospitals, Ethiopia. Methods. A prospective cohort study was conducted on 310 adult patients who had undergone abdominal surgery from August to December 2019. Data were collected using a standardized, structured, and pretested questionnaire. Anthropometric and serum albumin measurements were used to measure nutritional status. A multivariable Cox-regression analyses model was fitted to show the association between malnutrition and wound healing and p value < 0.05 was used to declare statistical significance value. Results. The cumulative incidence rate of good wound healing was 65.5% (95% CI: 60.0–71.0). Patients who had normal preoperative body mass index (adjusted hazard ratio (AHR) = 2.22 (95% CI: 1.55–3.19)) and normal range of serum albumin level (≥3.5) (AHR = 1.56 (95% CI: 1.05–2.29)) were significantly associated with better wound healing outcomes. Conclusion. Nutritional status had a strong association with good wound healing outcomes. Therefore, nutritional status screening should be done for all adult patients before undergoing abdominal surgery to improve wound healing outcomes and reduce hospital stays.

Background: Diabetic foot ulcers is a major complication of diabetes mellitus, and precedes >80% of all diabetes related lower leg amputations. One of the risk factors in non-healing diabetic ulcer is low serum albumin level. The objectives of this study were to study the effect of low serum albumin level in patients with diabetic foot ulcer and to study the factors affecting wound healing in diabetic ulcer. Methods: Prospective cohort study in a tertiary hospital. Results: The mean age among study was 57.8 out of which 68.3% were males and 31.7% were females. 55% patients presented with slough over ulcer, 29.2% patients presented with healthy granulation and 15.8% patients presented with extensive wound infection. Among study group 50% patients had good glycaemic control and 50% patients had poor glycaemic control. Conclusions: Low serum albumin level is one of the attributable risk factor of non-healing ulcers in diabetic foot. Poor glycaemic status is also a risk factor for non-healing ulcer.

Abstract Purpose The aim of this study was to study the nutritional profile of node negative and node positive patients undergoing treatment for head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC). Methods This prospective cohort study was conducted between 2018 and 2020. Patients diagnosed with HNSCC, planned for treatment were enrolled after written informed consent. In Node negative(N0) and Node positive(N+) cohorts of patients, nutritional status was determined using- anthropometric measures and Subjective Global Assessment (SGA) scale pre-treatment, during and after treatment. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 22. Data was analyzed using parametric and non-parametric tests, p value of 0.05 was considered significant. Results 161 patients were analyses, 73 N0 and 88 N+ cohorts. Pre-treatment, 9.6 to 20.4% patients in N0 and 23.9 to 32.8% patients in N+ cohorts were malnourished. Incidence of malnutrition at completion of treatment was 40.8–52.5% overall, 20.5–41.1% N0, 39.5–62.8% N+. Mean reduction in weight (11.1% ±7.82 v/s 6.26% ±8.3, p=0.000), mean reduction in BMI (2.57 ±1.87 v/s 1.29 ±1.62, p=0.000), median reduction in MUAC (2cm v/s 1cm, p=0.000) and median increase in SGA score were higher (13 v/s 6, p=0.000) in multi-modality as compared to single modality treatment. Similar findings were noted in N0 and N+ cohorts. Conclusion As compared to N0, N+ patients had higher burden of malnutrition at diagnosis, more worsening of nutritional parameters during treatment. More decline in Nutritional status was seen in patients receiving multi-modality as compared to single modality treatment.

Sirin S et al. Psychosocial effects of otoplasty in adult patients: a prospective cohort study.
