Pasty rocket engines have broad application prospects in the aerospace field. To study the internal ballistic characteristics of the pasty propellant rocket engine, the burning surface change model of pasty propellant was built. The calculation program was developed to calculate the pressure evolution in the combustion chamber, and the experiment was carried out based on a pasty propellant rocket test system. The data calculated by the program are in good agreement with the experiment, the error of the initial pressure peak is only 4.02%, and the internal ballistic characteristics of the rocket engine at each stage were analyzed detailly. The effects of ignition delay time, transport pipeline structure, free volume of the combustion chamber, mass flow rate, and flow velocity of the pasty propellant on internal ballistic characteristics of the pasty propellant rocket engine are investigated. The results indicate that when the ignition delay time increases, the pressure rises faster and the initial pressure peak increases obviously. The transport pipe diameter changes from 11.3 mm to 7.4 mm, and the initial combustion time and residual propellant combustion time decreased by 41.3% and 36.0%. The reduction of the free volume of the combustion chamber can reduce the initial pressure peak and the time to reach the equilibrium pressure. The initial pressure spike and equilibrium pressure rise with the increase of the pasty propellant flow velocity. While the ignition transient decreased with the increase of the pasty propellant flow velocity. The internal ballistic properties can be improved by reducing the ignition delay time, the diameter of the transport pipeline, and the free volume of the combustion chamber, or by increasing the mass flow rate of the pasty propellant rocket engine.

This study presents the effect of ignition energy (Eig) on ignition delay time (tdelay) and uncertainty of laminar burning velocity (Su0) measurement of lean methane/air mixture in a constant volume combustion chamber. The mixture at an equivalence ratio of 0.6 is ignited using a pair of electrodes at the 2-mm spark gap. Eig is measured by integrating the product of voltage V(t) and current I(t) signals during a discharge period. The in-chamber pressure profiles are analyzed using the pressure-rise method to obtain tdelay and Su0. Su0 approximates 8.0 cm/s. Furthermore, the increasing Eig could shorten tdelay, leading to a faster combustion process. However, when Eig is greater than a critical value, called minimum reliable ignition energy (MRIE), the additional elevating Eig has the marginal effect on tdelay and Su0. The existence of MRIE supports to optimize the ignition systems and partly explains why extreme-high Eig>> MRIE has less contribution to engine performance.

This paper discusses the effect of ignition delay time in diesel engines on the formation of particulate matter, using fuel formulations with different sulfur concentrations from various sources. Our findings indicate that the cetane number has a significant influence on particulate matter emissions, especially in engines with mechanical fuel injection. The maximum pressure in the combustion chamber increases as the cetane number increases, favoring the increase in the cracking reactions of high molecular weight fractions remaining in the liquid state and thus increasing the production of particulate matter. In certain conditions, this increase in pressure has a beneficial effect on the thermal efficiency of the cycle. Higher temperatures in the combustion chamber augment the speed of oxidation, reducing unburned hydrocarbon emissions. The ignition delay time of fuel has a strong effect on the formation of particulate matter and on the emission of unburned hydrocarbons.

The paper presents the results of ignition and thermal behavior for samples of high-energy materials (HEM) based on ammonium perchlorate (AP) and ammonium nitrate (AN), active binder and powders of Al, B, AlB2, and TiB2. A CO2 laser with a heat flux density range of 90-200 W/cm2 was used for studies of ignition. The activation energy and characteristics of ignition for the HEM samples were determined. Also, the ignition delay time and the surface temperature of the reaction layer during the heating and ignition for the HEM samples were determined. It was found that the complete replacement of micron-sized aluminum powder by amorphous boron in a HEM sample leads to a considerable decrease in the ignition delay time by a factor of 2.2-2.8 at the same heat flux density due to high chemical activity and the difference in the oxidation mechanisms of boron particles. The use of aluminum diboride in a HEM sample allows one to reduce the ignition delay time of a HEM sample by a factor of 1.7-2.2. The quasi-stationary ignition temperature is the same for the AlB2-based and AlB12-based HEM samples.

Based on GRI3.0, we study the main chemical kinetics process about reactions of singlet oxygen O2(a1Δg) and ozone O3 with methane-air combustion products, inherit and further develop research in chemical kinetics process with enhancement effects on methane-air mixed combustion by these two molecules. In addition, influence of these two molecules on ignition delay time and flame speed of laminar mixture are considered in our numerical simulation research. This study validates the calculation of this model which cotains these two active molecules by using experimental data of ignition delay time and the speed of laminar flame propagation. In CH4-air mixing laminar combustion under fuel-lean condition(ф=0.5), flame speed will be increased, and singlet oxygen with 10% of mole fraction increases it by 80.34%, while ozone with 10% mole fraction increase it by 127.96%. It mainly because active atoms and groups(O, H, OH, CH3, CH2O, CH3O, etc) will be increased a lot after adding active molecules in the initial stage, and chain reaction be reacted greatly, inducing shortening of reaction time and accelerating of flame speed. Under fuel rich(ф=1.5), accelerating of flame speed will be weakened slightly, singlet oxygen with 10% in molecular oxygen increase it by 48.93%, while ozone with 10% increase it by 70.25%.
