A new species, Brachypsectra cleidecostae Lawrence, Monteith & Reid sp. nov., is described from Australia on the basis of one reared adult female from inland Queensland and larvae from the type locality and two other widely separated semi-arid localities in South Australia and Western Australia. Two of the four larval collections were from under tree bark and one was from ground litter. The species is differentiated on both adult and larval characters. The broader mandible with retention of a retinacular tooth may indicate a sister relationship with species of the genus from other continents.

Anopheles (Nyssorhynchus) deaneorum sp. n. is described from specimens collected in Guajará-Mirim, Rondônia state and Rio Branco, Acre state, Brazil, on human and animal baits, inside dwellings and from the progenies of engorged females. A detailed description of the shape of egg, external appearance of adult female and male, genitalias, female cibarial armature and complete chaetotaxy of pupa and larva show that it can be distinguished from Anopheles albitarsis from the type-locality and other areas by the paler general external appearance of the adult, the posterolateral tufts of scales, on the female abdominal terga and the branching of the outer anterior clypeal seta (3-C) of the fourth instar larva (as shown in illustrations). If species can also be distinguished from An. albitarsis from the type locality by the allele frequencies at 11 enzymic loci as represented by Nei's Genetic Distance.

A recent publication by Bruce (2008a) reported the presence of Palaemonella spinulata Yokoya, 1936 in the Dampier Archipelago, Western Australia. This report noted that “The holotype specimen from Misaki, Japan, is considered to be lost (Holthuis 1952; Bruce 1970; Okuno pers. comm.). The designation of a neotype would appear useful but one from Japanese or nearby waters would be more appropriate than one of the present specimens”. The brief description provided by Yokoya (1936), with only a single figure showing the whole specimen, antennule, antenna, mandible, second maxilliped and posterior telson, is inadequate for comparison with other species of the genus. This deficiency has now been rectified by Hayashi (2009) who has provided a detailed and well illustrated description of P. spinulata and designated a neotype from Sagami Bay, near Misaki, the type locality. This re-description immediately indicated that the Western Australian specimens were not conspecific and they are now described as a new species. The specimens are held in the collections of the Western Australian Museum, Perth.

Explanations are made for the choice of a neotype from Kurnell, Botany Bay, N.S.W., Australia. A new combination is made for G. microphylla from Australia (Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania) and Norfolk Island. A new species, G. arenaria, is described from the East Kimberley District of Western Australia, and the Northern Territory. The three species are illustrated in detail. Keys are provided to distinguish these taxa from their allies.

A major landmark in the taxonomy of the shrimps of the subfamily Pontoniinae was the publication of the Siboga Expedition monograph by Holthuis (1952). In this report Holthuis referred four lots of specimens to Periclimenes aesopius (Bate). This species is now placed in the genus Ancylomenes Okuno & Bruce (2010) as Ancylomenes aesopius (Bate, 1863) and is known only from Australian waters (South Australia and Western Australia). Through the kindness of Dr Dirk Platvoet it has been possible to re-examine these Siboga specimens. Re-examination showed that none can now be referred to Bate’s species which is distinguished from all other species of the genus by the presence of three or four post-orbital teeth on the anterior carapace (Bruce, 1977). Several species of Ancylomenes are represented in the Siboga material and Holthuis’s description of the material does not appear based on any specimen in particular. One specimen is however, readily distinguishable from the others by the unusually slender ambulatory dactyli. It is also distinct from all presently known species of Ancylomenes, and is herein designated as a new species and its characters described and illustrated.

We report the discovery of a geographically disjunct and morphologically distinctive species of direct-developing frog of the genus Phrynopus (Phrynopus mariellaleo sp. nov.) that changes considerably our understanding of the distribution of species in this Andean genus. The type locality lies on a subcordillera (Cerro de Campanario area) of the extreme northeastern portion of the Cordillera Central of Peru, on the headwaters of the Mayo River, Amazonas department, at 2575 m asl (6°6’42.9’’S, 77°26’24’’W). This area is situated 170 km to the NE from the northernmost record of Phrynopus known so far. Molecular phylogenetic analyses of a supermatrix (13269 aligned positions of gene sequences of four mitochondrial and ten nuclear genes) of 105 terminals (representing 93 named and 9 unnamed species of Holoadeninae) recover this new species as the sister to Phrynopus auriculatus, a species occurring more than 500 km south of the type locality of the new species. Both Phrynopus auriculatus and the new species occur at moderate elevations on the easternmost stretches of the Andean subcordilleras; their sister relationship point to a potentially broader distribution of species of Phrynopus along the poorly sampled intervening areas of the eastern hills of the Andes. The new species has a conspicuous and visibly large tympanic membrane (a trait rare in the clade), outlined by a marked bold black supratympanic fold and a black facial mask, and exhibits conspicuous dorsolateral, scapular, and middorsal Y-shaped folds. Specimens were found on the forest floor—a rocky substrate covered by a thick layer of leaf litter, moss and roots—of a primary humid montane forest (Yungas ecoregion) with scattered patches of bamboo (Chusquea spp.). Our phylogenetic analyses corroborate the monophyly of all Holoadeninae genera, including Euparkerella and Psychrophrynella, genera for which tests of monophyly were pending, and corroborates Hypodactylus nigrovittatus as part of Hypodactylus and sister to a clade that includes H. brunneus, H. elassodiscus and H. peraccai.

Neorhaphiomidas Norris, with 7 species, is an endemic genus and the only Australian representative of the mydid subfamily Megascelinae. The genus was for many years considered to be restricted to Western Australia but the range of the genus was extended to the eastern part of South Australia with Paramonov's (1961) description of N. inermis. The new species described here, the first record of the genus from Queensland, extends the known distribution of the genus some 1500 km to the north-east.

Known as a monotypic genus for over a century, Marmasoma White, 1916 is an endemic Australian bee fly genus belonging to the tribe Eclimini of the subfamily Bombyliinae. A new species: Marmasoma hortorum sp. nov. is described based on a series of specimens from Western Australia and South Australia. This new species can be easily distinguished from the congener by the inconspicuous pale wing markings and mostly white to pale yellow scales on the body, as well as characters of both male and female genitalia. M. sumptuosum is found in south-eastern Australia, including Tasmania, and some specimens have been collected on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. M. hortorum sp. nov. occurs in south Western Australia, and a pair of specimens has been taken just north of Port Augusta in South Australia. A key to species of Marmasoma is provided.

A new genus, Cryptofavognathus is proposed for two species, Cryptofavognathus afyonensis (Koç & Akyol, 2004) comb. nov. and C. anatolicus sp. nov. The adult female and male of C. anatolicus sp. nov. collected from moss and a bird’s nest are herein described and figured.
