Even though rejecting the notion of void, Aristotle considers it a crucial theme in his discussion about motion. That becomes evident when we find four chapters of Physics 4 dedicated to the discussion and refutation of the void. In this paper, I set on an exploratory search for the reasons that moved Aristotle to discuss the idea of void as a container (ἀγγεῖον) in Phys. 4.6 213a15-19, unearthing a series of terms and notions used by previous thinkers that may have led Aristotle to formulate such conception. Special attention is given to Democritus, who, with his theory of atoms and void, is clearly the main target of Aristotle’s criticism of the void. I conclude that the notion of void as a container is not at all strange to ancient thinkers, and that its reconstitution by Aristotle is everything but trivial and simplistic, inasmuch as the Democritean notion of void he intends to refute is everything but trivial and simplistic.

ABSTRACT Mature female hamsters bearing subcutaneous polyacrylamide (PAA) implants, with ethinyloestradiol (EO), for at least 10 days prior to mating revealed: 0.5 and 2.5 mg EO in 7% PAA significantly disturb the timing of oestrus and mating, but have no apparent effect on rate of pregnancy, ovulation and implantation. 2.5 mg EO in 20 and 40% PAA conspicuously reduces the likelihood of pregnancy, although the occurrence of oestrus and mating are affected only slightly. Fertility in these hamsters was virtually restored, judging from pregnancy rates, when they were remated 11 days, or more, following removal of their implants (37 days after implantation), but significantly more foetuses were resorbed in these litters. From tissue sections of skin and muscle at the implant site, ovary, uterus, pituitary, adrenals and liver, PAA implants, without EO, cause no overt pathological changes in the bearer. Effects characteristic of oestrogen are present when these implants contain EO, and these include a conspicuous thickening of the epidermis and dermis; haemorrhagic lesions were also noted in the maternal placenta of animals with EO implants. There is an association between reproductive performance and the rate of EO release by an implant. A 7% PAA implant with 2.5 mg EO can release most of it within 2 days, and principally influences events (oestrus and mating) that precede the main target (pregnancy) of a 20% PAA implant, which releases the steroid over the longer interval of 7 days.

Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) is still the main target of the Head and Neck Squamous Cell Cancer (HNSCC) because its overexpression has been detected in more than 90% of this type of cancer. This overexpression is usually linked with more aggressive disease, increased resistance to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, increased metastasis, inhibition of apoptosis, promotion of neoplastic angiogenesis, and, finally, poor prognosis and decreased survival. Due to this reason, the main target in the search of new drugs and inhibitors candidates is to downturn this overexpression. Quantitative Structure-Activity Relationship (QSAR) is one of the most widely used approaches while looking for new and more active inhibitors drugs. In this contest, a lot of authors used this technique, combined with others, to find new drugs or enhance the activity of well-known inhibitors. In this paper, on one hand, we will review the most important QSAR approaches developed in the last fifteen years, spacing from classical 1D approaches until more sophisticated 3D; the first paper is dated 2003 while the last one is from 2017. On the other hand, we will present a completely new QSAR approach aimed at the prediction of new EGFR inhibitors drugs. The model presented here has been developed over a dataset consisting of more than 1000 compounds using various molecular descriptors calculated with the DRAGON 7.0© software.

Opioid signaling plays a central role in pain perception. As such, it remains the main target in the development of antinociceptive agents, despite serious side effects involved. In recent years, hopes for improved opioid painkillers are rising, together with our understanding of allosterism and biased signaling mechanisms. In this review, we focus on recently discovered allosteric modulators of opioid receptors, insights into phenomena underlying their action, as well as on how they extend our understanding of mechanisms of previously known compounds. A brief overlook of their synthesis is also presented.

The importance of monoclonal antibodies in oncology has increased drastically following the discovery of Milstein and Kohler. Since the first approval of the monoclonal antibody, i.e. Rituximab in 1997 by the FDA, there was a decline in further applications but this number has significantly increased over the last three decades for various therapeutic applications due to the lesser side effects in comparison to the traditional chemotherapy methods. Presently, numerous monoclonal antibodies have been approved and many are in queue for approval as a strong therapeutic agent for treating hematologic malignancies and solid tumors. The main target checkpoints for the monoclonal antibodies against cancer cells include EGFR, VEGF, CD and tyrosine kinase which are overexpressed in malignant cells. Other immune checkpoints like CTLA-4, PD-1 and PD-1 receptors targeted by the recently developed antibodies increase the capability of the immune system in destroying the cancerous cells. Here, in this review, the mechanism of action, uses and target points of the approved mAbs against cancer have been summarized.

Chapter 7 demonstrates that sexual sin became the main target for purity discourse in early Christian texts, and attempts to explain why. Christian imagery of sexual defilement drew from a number of traditions—Greco-Roman sexual ethics, imagery of sexual sin from the Hebrew Bible and Second Temple texts, and both Jewish and pagan purity laws, all seen through the lens of Paul’s imagery of sexuality and sexual sin. Two broad currents characterized Christian sexual ethics in the second century: one upheld marriage and the family as the basis for a holy Christian society and church, while the second rejected all sexuality, including in marriage. Writers of both currents made heavy use of defilement imagery. For the first, sexual sin was a dangerous defilement, contaminating the Christian community and severing it from God. For the second, more radical current, sexuality itself was the defilement; virginity or continence alone were pure.

Abstract Weak structure space (briefly, wss) has master looks, when the whole space is not open, and these classes of subsets are not closed under arbitrary unions and finite intersections, which classify it from typical topology. Our main target of this article is to introduce $$\psi _{{\mathcal {H}}}(.)$$ ψ H ( . ) -operator in hereditary class weak structure space (briefly, $${\mathcal {H}}wss$$ H w s s ) $$(X, w, {\mathcal {H}})$$ ( X , w , H ) and examine a number of its characteristics. Additionally, we clarify some relations that are credible in topological spaces but cannot be realized in generalized ones. As a generalization of w-open sets and w-semiopen sets, certain new kind of sets in a weak structure space via $$\psi _{{\mathcal {H}}}(.)$$ ψ H ( . ) -operator called $$\psi _{{\mathcal {H}}}$$ ψ H -semiopen sets are introduced. We prove that the family of $$\psi _{{\mathcal {H}}}$$ ψ H -semiopen sets composes a supra-topology on X. In view of hereditary class $${\mathcal {H}}_{0}$$ H 0 , $$w T_{1}$$ w T 1 -axiom is formulated and also some of their features are investigated.
