A new species of spider crab, Collodes tuerkayi n. sp., is described and illustrated from the Western Atlantic (Puerto Rico and northern Brazil). The new species superficially resembles C. inermis A. Milne-Edwards, 1878, in the general appearance of the body, but is distinguished by the details of the carapace, thoracic sternum and antennal ornamentation and the proportion of the pereopods.

A new species of eurysquilloid stomatopod,Eurysquilla petronioisp. nov., is described from the tropical western Atlantic.Eurysquilla petronioisp. nov. is the fourteenth species of the genus to be recognized worldwide, the fifth species from the western Atlantic and the second from Brazilian waters. It is most closely related toE. maiaguesensisfrom Puerto Rico, but differs chiefly in having an unarmed versus apically spinous rostral plate and 6 or 7 rather than 8–10 teeth on dactylus of raptorial claw. A key to the species of the genus is provided.

A new species of spider crab, Hemus magalae n. sp. (Majidae), is described from a single male specimen from Islas de las Perlas, Pacific Ocean coast of Panamá. This species differs from its congeners with respect to many features of the carapace including mid-line elevation and lateral dentition. Hemus A. Milne-Edwards, 1875, now includes four species, three from coastal waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean and one from shallow waters in the tropical western Atlantic Ocean. A key to the Pacific and Atlantic species of Hemus is provided.

Centropomus irae sp. nov. (Centropomidae) is described from two localities in the state of Amapá, northern Brazil. The new species differs from all its congeners by the typically brown-colored lateral line, the relatively smaller mean interorbital width (4.1% of SL vs. 5.2–6.9%), mean snout length (8.9% of SL vs. 9.8–11.1%), mean diameter of the orbit (4.5% of SL vs. 5.4–7.3%), and mean mandible length (15.7% of SL vs.19.9–21.6%). The new species can also be distinguished from the similar Centropomus undecimalis by the number of scales around the caudal peduncle (18–23, usually 19–21, vs. 22–28, usually 24–27). With Centropomus irae sp. nov., seven species of the genus are now known to occur in the western Atlantic. Three new species and a new genus of majoid crabs from deep waters in the eastern Pacific are described and illustrated using morphological and molecular data. A new species of inachoidid, Collodesanartiussp. n. is described from Peru, which resembles C.tenuirostris Rathbun, 1893, in the general appearance of the carapace, but is distinguished by the details of tubercles on the carapace and thoracic sternum, proportions of the pereopod articles, and bathymetric distribution. A new epialtid, Nibiliamachalasp. n., is described from Ecuador; Nibilia A Milne-Edwards, 1878 has, until now, been considered to be monotypic, occurring only in the western Atlantic. This new species, from the eastern Pacific, closely resembles N.antilocapra (Stimpson, 1871) in the general morphology, but can be distinguished by the number of spines on the carapace and pereopods. Another epialtid, Solincaaulixgen. n. et sp. n, is establish for material collected from Ecuador and Peru, and can be easily identified from other taxa by the presence of a deep furrow between the very inflated branchial regions.

Abstract A new species of Rhyacoglanis is described from the rapids of Jatobal, Pará State, Brazil. This species differs from the congeners by fusing hypurals 3, 4, and 5 (vs. hypural 5 free). It also differs from the other species, except for Rhyacoglanis epiblepsis, by the color pattern with numerous dark spots on the body, short post-cleithral process, rounded pectoral and caudal fins, and incomplete lateral line. This species is known only from the type locality, which is currently flooded by the Tucuruí reservoir.

Gyrinus rhyssonotum sp. n. is described and illustrated based on adult males and females collected in Barcelos County, Amazonas state, Brazil. The new species belongs to the subgenus Oreogyrinus Ochs, 1935 and it is compared with Gyrinus (Oreogyrinus) fittkaui Ochs, 1963 and G. (O.) opalinus Régimbart, 1883, both occurring in the Brazilian Amazonas and G. (O.) colombicus Régimbart, 1883 and G. (O.) venezolensis Ochs, 1954, these two latter alien to the Brazilian fauna but with which G. (O) rhyssonotum sp. n. seems to be more closely related, though the new species can be distinguished from both by a series of characteristics, mainly observed in the body shape, elytra, pronotum, and in male and female genitalia.

We describe adult morphology, advertisement call, and natural history diagnostic of a new species of Eleutherodactylus from a fresh water (palustrine) herbaceous wetland of northern coastal Puerto Rico. The new species is apparently the smallest Puerto Rican Eleutherodactylus and is morphologically most similar to E. gryllus, which inhabits high-elevation humid forests and cloud forests. Although both species have well-developed glands throughout the body, morphological ratios, body coloration, frequency of calls, call structure, and habitat association indicate that it is a well-differentiated species. The new species and E. gryllus may have diverged from an ancestral wetland-dwelling species.

Nineteen species of the neotropical gobiid genus Elacatinus are currently known from the western Atlantic, six of which are closely associated with sponges. Elacatinus colini is described as a new species of sponge-dwelling goby from Belize and Islas de la Bahía, Honduras. Formerly regarded as a color variant of E. xanthiprora (Böhlke & Robins) from Florida, it is differentiated principally by having a white instead of bright yellow stripe on the body, and 17 or 18 vs. 19 or 20 pectoral-fin rays. A second new species, E. serranilla, also formerly identified as a color form of E. xanthiprora, is described from three specimens from the Serranilla Bank in the Caribbean Sea (15°50’N, 79°50’W) and one from Jamaica (formerly a paratype of E. xanthiprora). It is distinct in having 10 dorsal soft rays (vs. 11 or 12 for E. xanthiprora), a bluish white dorsolateral stripe and median rostral band, longer dorsal-fin spines, and longer dorsal and anal soft rays. Elacatinus xanthiprora is presently known from Dry Tortugas (type locality) north to Miami in the Atlantic, and north to 28°41’N, 83°45’W on the Gulf coast of Florida, where the largest specimen (ANSP 148926, 43.1 mm SL) was collected at a depth of 26 m. Specimens off the east coast of Nicaragua in 27 m, and from nearby Isla de Providencia in 3–13 m, also previously identified as E. xanthiprora, probably represent two different undescribed species. Additional collection of specimens from the latter two localities is recommended for details of life color and DNA analysis.

A new species of scaly blenny, Labrisomus conditus sp. n., is described from Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, off northeastern Brazil. It differs from its Western Atlantic congeners by the following combination of characters: nuchal cirri when depressed not reaching dorsal-fin origin, 68 to 73 lateral line scales, first and second dorsal-fin spines slightly shorter than third spine and not flexible, numerous pale dots overall (light blue in life), opercular dark spot with incomplete and diffuse broad pale margin (orange in life). The new species is a territorial bottom-dweller in rocky shores and is found among algae and in crevices at depths from 0.5 to 6 m. Labrisomus conditus sp. n. feeds mostly on crustaceans (crabs, amphipods) and molluscs (snails, bivalves). The new species increases to five the species within the genus Labrisomus recorded from Southwestern Atlantic.

I have received from South Africa specimens of blood taken from cattle which contain a new species of Trypanosoma. This new species can be at once distinguished from the Trypanosomas of Surra, Tse-tse Fly Disease, or Rat by its larger size, it being almost twice as large as any of the others. In general appearance it conforms closely to the others in possessing an oval protoplasmic body, a longitudinal fin-like membrane, and a single flagellum.
