George Archibald Grant Mitchell, OBE, TD, MB, ChB, ChM, MSc, DSc, FRCS (1906–1993) was a professor of anatomy at the University of Manchester from 1946 to 1973. He is mainly remembered for his research in neuroanatomy, especially of the autonomic nervous system. He studied medicine at the Aberdeen University, and after qualifying in 1929 he held posts in surgery and anatomy and worked as a surgeon in the Highlands. In 1939, he joined the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was based in Egypt and the Middle East, where he carried out trials of sulphonamides and penicillin on wounded soldiers; in 1943, he returned to England as Adviser in Penicillin Therapy for 21 Army Group, preparing for the invasion of Europe.

Sarah Frankcom worked at the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester between 2000 and 2019, and was the venue’s first sole Artistic Director from 2014. In this interview conducted in summer 2019, she discusses her time at the theatre and what she has learned from leading a major cultural organization and working with it. She reflects on a number of her own productions at this institution, including Hamlet, The Skriker, Our Town, and Death of a Salesman, and discusses the way the theatre world has changed since the beginning of her career as she looks forward to being the director of LAMDA. Rachel Clements lectures on theatre at the University of Manchester. She has published on playwrights Caryl Churchill and Martin Crimp, among others, and has edited Methuen student editions of Lucy Prebble’s Enron and Joe Penhall’s Blue/Orange. She is Book Reviews editor of NTQ.

I kid you not.  This is a time in Pacific regional history where as a middle-aged Tongan woman with European, Maori, and Samoan ancestries who was born and raised in New Zealand, I teach students taking my undergraduate papers how not to go about making stereotypical assumptions.  The students in my classes are mostly Maori and Pakeha (white, European) New Zealanders.  They learn to interrogate typecasts produced by state policy, media, and academia classifying the suburbs of South Auckland as overcrowded with brown people, meaning Pacific Islanders; overburdened by non-communicable diseases, like obesity and diabetes; and overdone in dismal youth statistics for crime and high school drop-outs.  And then some well-meaning but incredibly uninformed staff members at the university where I am a senior lecturer have a bright idea to give away portions of roast pig on a spit to Pacific Islanders at the South Auckland campus open day. Who asked the university to give us free roast pig?  Who asked us if this is what we want from a university that was planted out South in 2010 to sell degrees to a South Auckland market predicted to grow to half a million people, largely young people, in the next two decades? (AUT University, 2014).  Who makes decisions about what gets dished up to Pacific Islanders in South Auckland, compared to what their hopes might be for university education prospects?  To rephrase Julie Landsman’s essay, how about “confronting the racism of low expectations” that frames and bounds Pacific Islanders in South Auckland when a New Zealand university of predominantly Palangi (white, European) lecturers and researchers on academic staff contemplate “closing achievement gaps?” (Landsman, 2004). Tackling “the soft bigotry of low expectations” set upon Pacific Islanders getting into and through the university system has prompted discussion around introducing two sets of ideas at Auckland University of Technology (The Patriot Post, 2014).  First, a summer school foundation course for literacy and numeracy on the South campus, recruiting Pacific Islander school leavers wanting to go on to study Bachelor’s degrees.  Previously, the University of Auckland had provided bridging paths designed for young Pacific peoples to step up to degree programmes (Anae et al, 2002).  Second, the possibility of performing arts undergraduate papers recognising a diverse and youthful ethnoscape party to an Auckland context of theatre, drama, dance, music, Maori and Pacific cultural performance, storytelling, and slam poetry (Appadurai, 1996).  Although this discussion is in its infancy and has not been feasibility scoped or formally initiated in the university system, it is a suggestion worth considering here. My inquiry is frank: Why conflate performance and South Auckland Pacific Islanders?  Does this not lend to a clichéd mould that supposes young Pacific Islanders growing up in the ill-famed suburbs of the poor South are naturally gifted at singing, dancing, and performing theatrics?  This is a characterisation fitted to inner-city Black American youth that has gone global and is wielded to tag, label, and brand urban Pacific Islanders of South Auckland.  Therefore, how are the aspirational interests of this niche market reflected in the content and context of initiatives with South Auckland Pacific Islander communities in mind?

On 17 April 1899, in Kirkham, Lancashire, Vincent Brian Wigglesworth was born into a talented and idiosyncratic Victorian family with roots going back to the hamlet of Wigglesworth in the south-west comer of Yorkshire. He was the son of Sydney Wigglesworth, M.R.C.S., L.R.C.P., Captain R.A.M.C., and Margaret Emmeline (née Pierce). Sydney Wigglesworth was a general practitioner but also an amateur mechanic and inventor who had studied engineering at Owens College (later the University of Manchester) before changing to medicine. He made scale models of locomotives and was a passionate pioneer motorist. Margaret Pierce came from a well-to-do family of London solicitors originating from Devon yeoman stock with business and nautical interests (Pierce Sound in North West Canada is named after an eighteenth-century ancestor). As an amateur painter trained at South Kensington she developed a great eye for colour. It was the kind of family that produced many famous Englishmen, artists as well as scientists. V.B.W.’s scientific illustrations show that he inherited his mothers artistic talent. His elder brother’s career as a landscape painter was cut short by his early death in 1936.

Abstract Resorting to personal memories from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, the author, who defended in 1971 at the University of Rome a thesis entitled Iranian Elements in Brahui, under Prof. Bausani’s direction (later revised and published under the title Iranian lexical elements in Brāhūī [Naples: Istituto Universitario Orientale, 1979]), reconstructs the political and cultural climate in which – at the end of the 1970s – a major subject of enquiry was the problem of the nature of the national unity among the countries of the Arab world. At the urging of Biancamaria Scarcia, Bausani decided to publish at the Institute of Islamic Studies of the University of Rome a volume of historical and linguistic essays coordinated by himself and B. Scarcia (Mondo islamico tra interazione e acculturazione [Roma: Istituto di studi islamici, 1981]). In this volume, Bausani published an essay on the concept of ‘Islamic language’ that took stock of his previous proposals made over more than twenty years (starting with his speech at the 1966 Ravello conference on a comparative history of the Islamic literatures). The author demonstrates that notwithstanding his use of linguistic terminology, Bausani’s main interest has always been the investigation of the possibility of identifying minimum distinctive traits present in the different literary typologies of various countries of Islamic culture.

With the passing of Joseph William Mellor on 24 May science lost an outstanding worker. The clay industries of this country lost a great leader, a pioneer in clay technology, appreciated alike for his high endeavour, achievement, and astuteness. Mellor was born at Huddersfield in 1869. When ten years old he was taken by his parents to New Zealand. During his youth he worked in a boot factory and took classes in the evenings at the Dunedin Technical School. At twenty-three he matriculated and a year later entered the University of Otago. After graduating and serving as a science lecturer a t an agricultural college he was awarded an 1851 Exhibition which took him to the University of Manchester in 1899

This chapter examines how novels in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the South Pacific were reviewed and publicized, and how readerships were informed and created. Literary journalism in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the South Pacific varies according to the populations, histories, and communications infrastructure of each location. In general, a common pattern has been initial evaluations of work against British and European, then latterly American, models, during which time commentators promoted local writing and sketched national ideals for an independent artistic expression. The chapter considers how book reviews were undertaken, as well as the role of reviewers, in newspapers, magazines, literary journals, academic periodicals, and on radio and television programmes. It shows that all the emergent national literatures in English functioned in an increasingly transnational space in the four nations from the 1950s, first under the rubric of Commonwealth literature and then as postcolonial literatures.
