Ingoldian fungi are frequently found in streams of the northern hemisphere, as well as in other regions worldwide. Even though they have high relevance as decomposers of fallen leaves, information on this group of fungi in Argentina is scarce. To assess the presence of ingoldian fungi in Pampean streams, samples of foam from 14 streams of different basins were collected. Four species and a new form of Tetracladium were recorded: Tetracladium breve, T. furcatum, T. marchalianum, T. setigerum and Tetracladium sp. Tetracladium furcatum is reported for the first time in South America, while T. breve and T. marchalianum are first records for Argentina.

Among the passengers on the ocean liner Provence, as it disembarked from the Argentine capital Buenos Aires on 30 July 1954 at the outset of its 18-day voyage to Marseilles, were members of the theatre company Renaud-Barrault, returning home after a lengthy tour during the course of which it had performed in Brazil, Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. If there was general fatigue at the end of such a gruelling schedule, during which the Company had given over 80 performances, there must have been an accompanying sense of exhilaration, and for perhaps the first time since leaving France on 24 April, an opportunity to relax. (Even the outward journey on Bretagne, the sister ship of Provence, had been taken up with a full schedule of rehearsals for the coming tour.) The joint directors, Jean-Louis Barrault and his wife Madeleine Renaud, as well as the young musical director, Pierre Boulez, joined their colleagues on board Provence a few days later at the Brazilian port of Salvador de Bahia, having opted to return to Brazil for a few days, during which there was an opportunity to witness a candomblé ceremony. For Jean-Louis Barrault, it was evidently a joyous return to the country which was the scene of the Company's first and perhaps greatest triumphs on a tour which had been as successful in every respect as the Company's first visit to South America in 1950.

Abstract This recent case is a leading case relating to local trusts and forced heirship. Forced heirship is a restriction to the liberty to write a will and determine the destiny of his/her future estate by the testator. It can be found in all South America (not in Latin America from Panama to México) and in most Civil Law countries in Europe, besides similar restrictions under sharia law. The way to avoid these restrictions has been the creation of a foreign trust over foreign assets. Although authors have long analyzed whether a local trust allows the avoidance of local forced heirship rules over local assets, there has been no case law in this respect (at least since the inclusion of the trust in Argentine law in 1995). In short, this is the first time a local trust over local assets has been under the scrutiny of the courts to determine if there is a violation of forced heirship.

Pteris cretica L. var. laeta is recorded for the first time in the Comechingones biogeographic province in central Argentina. This is the first record of P. cretica in central Argentina, and P. cretica var. laeta for the country. Until now Pteris cretica has only been known to occur, in America, in North America (Florida), Central America and South America in Neotropical biomes from Peru, Chile, Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay and northern Argentina as established in the Yungas biogeographic province, and as ruderal in Buenos Aires. An updated description is provided, along with pictures, differences with P. cretica var. cretica, and characteristic of the novel habitat of the species.

The genus Orthocis Casey is represented by 46 species occurring in insular and continental areas of the World, except for the Antarctic. Three Orthocis species are currently known from South America: the Andean O. elguetai Lopes-Andrade, from Chile; the Neotropical O. apicipennis (Pic) from a single locality in South Brazil; and O. platensis Brèthes from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Orthocis platensis is here redescribed and recorded for the first time from South and Southeast Brazil.

Ischnura ultima Ris, 1908 is recorded for the first time from Buenos Aires Province, Argentina, 750 km southeast from the southernmost previous known localities (Córdoba Province). This finding supports a stronger biogeographical relationship between the southern hills of Buenos Aires (surrounded by the Pampas lowlands) and the Monte province. In addition, this record supports the odonate endemic areas scheme previously proposed for Argentina.

New records of species of the subfamily Asopinae (Pentatomidae) of Argentina and adjacent countries are presented. A total of 34 species and 17 genera has been recorded for this region. The material studied belongs to the Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales, Buenos Aires, and to the Museo de La Plata, Argentina. Oplomus salamandra, Stiretrus loratus, and Tylospilus distans are new records for Argentina; Tylospilus chilensis for Bolivia; Tylospilus distans for Chile; Alcaeorrhynchus grandis and Oplomus cruentus are cited for the first time for Paraguay; and Discocera cayennensis, Podisus nigrispinus, and Podisus australis for Uruguay. The geographic distributions of the species are mapped.

Drosophila suzukii (Diptera, Drosophilidae) is an exotic species, endemic to Asia and currently a pest to small and stone fruits in several countries of North America and Europe. It was detected in 2013 for the first time in South America, in the south of Brazil. Unlike most drosophilids, this species deserves special attention, because the females are capable of oviposit inside healthy fruits, rendering their sale and export prohibited. Despite the confirmed existence of this species in different states of Brazil, this insect is yet been to be given the pest status. Nevertheless, the mere presence of this species is enough to cause concern to producers of small fruits and to justify further investigation for it’s control, especially chemical control for a possible change in status. Therefore, the goal of this work was to evaluate, in laboratory, mortality of D. suzukii adults and ovicidal effect when exposed to different insecticides registered for species of the Tephritidae and Agromyzidae families in different cultures. The insecticides deltamethrin, dimethoate, spinosad, fenitrothion, phosmet, malathion, methidathion, and zeta-cypermethrin resulted in mortality to 100 % of the subjects three days after the treatment (DAT). Regarding the effects over eggs, it was  established that the insecticides fenitrothion, malathion, and methidathion deemed 100 % of the eggs not viable, followed by phosmet and diflubenzuron, which also caused elevated reduction in the eclosion of larvae two DAT.

Agriculture is the largest fresh water consuming sector, and maize is the most produced and consumed crop worldwide. The water footprint (WF) methodology quantifies and evaluates the water volumes consumed and polluted by a given crop, as well as its impacts. In this work, we quantified for the first time the green WF (soil water from precipitation that is evapotranspired) and the green virtual water exports of maize from Buenos Aires province, Argentina, during 2016–2017, due to the relevance of this region in the world maize trade. Furthermore, at local level, we quantified the green, blue (evapotranspired irrigation), and grey (volume of water needed to assimilate a pollution load) WF of maize in a pilot basin. The green WF of maize in the province of Buenos Aires ranged between 170 and 730 m3/ton, with the highest values in the south following a pattern of yields. The contribution of this province in terms of green virtual water to the international maize trade reached 2213 hm3/year, allowing some water-scarce nations to ensure water and water-dependent food security and avoid further environmental impacts related to water. At the Napaleofú basin scale, the total WF of rainfed maize was 358 m3/ton (89% green and 11% grey) and 388 m3/ton (58% green, 25% blue, and 17% grey) for the irrigated crop, showing that there is not only a green WF behind the exported maize, but also a Nitrogen-related grey WF.

Fossil cedar foliage of the Cupressinocladus interruptus type, with associated seeds and cones, is locally abundant in Paleocene deposits of the Ravenscrag Formation, southwestern Saskatchewan, Canada. Vegetative remains of this type occur frequently in early Tertiary plant assemblages throughout the northern hemisphere, indicating that this now extinct cedar was once widespread. For the first time this cedar can be described on the basis of both vegetative and reproductive morphology. Foliage is frond-like with a characteristic opposite branching pattern. Seed cones are globose and woody and bear four equal and decussate scales with prominent umbos. Seeds bear large, equal, semicircular wings. The fossil cedar appears most closely related to extant Cupressaceae such as Thuja, Chamaecyparis, and Heyderia. Foliage closely resembles that of Thuja, while cones are most similar to those of Chamaecyparis. The fossil differs sufficiently in foliage and seed cone structure to preclude assignment to an extant genus and is here assigned to Mesocyparis borealis gen. et sp. nov. Similarities among such extant genera as Thuja, Chamaecyparis, Heyderia, and Thujopsis and the fossil Mesocyparis borealis suggest that all may belong to a single natural group. Furthermore, this group may be more closely related to the southern hemispheric genera Libocedrus, Papuacedrus, and Austrocedrus than present classification schemes imply. Our examination of the Cupressaceae indicates that a revision of present systems of classification is required to accommodate evidence from both extant and extinct cedars.
