Vamsapriya yunnana sp. nov., collected from dead bamboo in Yunnan Province of China, is described and illustrated in this paper. The new taxon is characterized by synnematous conidiophores, with enteroblastic, monotretic conidiogenous cells and brown to dark brown, 4–9-septate, fusiform conidia with a long, apical, appendage-like region. The species differs from the type and other species in the genus in having a wider fertile region and rostrate apex of the conidia. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses of a combined ITS, LSU and RPB2 DNA sequence dataset show that V. yunnana is a new species, belonging to the genus Vamsapriya in Xylariaceae.

Phaeosphaeria ampeli is a new species collected from dead leaves of Ficus ampelas in Fanlu Township area, Dahu forest, Chiayi, Taiwan. Phaeosphaeria musae is a new record from dead leaves of Roystonea regia. Both species are described, illustrated and compared with similar species. Phaeosphaeria ampeli is distinguished from other Phaeosphaeria species based on distinct size differences of the ascomata, asci, ascospores and analyses of DNA sequence data. Maximum parsimony, maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses of combined ITS, LSU, SSU and tef1-α sequence data are used to clarify the phylogenetic affinities of the species.

A new species of Neolinocarpon, N. phayaoense was found on a branch of Hevea brasiliensis in northern Thailand. The new species is introduced in this paper, with evidence from morphology and phylogenetic analyses. Descriptions, illustrations and notes are provided for the new taxon. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian inference analyses of a combined LSU and ITS sequence data clarified the phylogenetic affinity in Neolinocarpon, with the species separated from Linocarpon in Linocarpaceae. Neolinocarpon is morphologically distinct from Linocarpon in having immersed ascomata.

Helminthosporium species from submerged wood in streams in Yunnan Province, China were studied based on morphology and DNA sequence data. Descriptions and illustrations of Helminthosporium velutinum and a new species H. aquaticum are provided. A combined phylogenetic tree, based on SSU, ITS and LSU sequence data, place the species in Massarinaceae, Pleosporales. The polyphyletic nature of Helminthosporium species within Massarinaceae is shown based on ITS sequence data available in GenBank.

Tubaria squamata is described as new from Jiaohe county, Jilin province, China. This species is distinctive morphologically because of the small (slightly) hairy or scaly pileus, subelliptic to elliptic non-amyloid basidiospores, subclavate to cylindrical or lageniform cheilocystidia, and a pileipellis as a cutis. Phylogenetic analyses based on internal transcribed spacer sequences with Bayesian Inference analysis (BA) and Maximum Likelihood (ML) showed that T. squamata is different from related species. Illustrations and a complete taxonomic description are also provided, as well as a key to the Tubaria species known from China.

Sanghuangporus vitexicola (Hymenochaetales) is described as a new species based on collections made from Pingtung County, tropical South Taiwan. All studied basidiocarps grew on living trunks of Vitex negundo. This new species is characterized by having perennial, pileate basidiocarps; pore surface yellowish brown, pores 6–8 per mm; context 0.7–1.5 cm thick; setae ventricose to subulate, dark brown, 17–30 × 5–8 μm; basidiospores broadly ellipsoid, brownish, smooth, 4.2–4.8 × 3.2–3.7 μm, with 0.2–0.5 μm thick walls. Maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference phylogenies inferred from the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region of rDNA indicated that six strains of Sanghuangporus viexicola formed a monophyletic group which is sister to S. zonatus. An identification key to known species of Sanghuangporus is provided.

AbstractPilophorus fruticosus Li S. Wang & Xin Y. Wang is described from south-west China. It is characterized by the presence of densely dichotomously branched, partly decorticated pseudopodetia, and by having single, spherical apothecia on the apices of the pseudopodetia. The species grows on siliceous rocks in alpine regions of the Yunnan Province. A detailed description and illustrations are provided. The new taxon is compared with other Pilophorus species.

A new species of the genus Gonyosoma Wagler is described from Yunnan Province, China. The new species closely resembles G. prasinum (Blyth), but it is differentiated from the latter species by the following characters: precloacal plate divided, iris blue and inside of mouth greyish-white in life. Based on phylogenetic analyses of mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence data, the new species is recovered as the sister species to G. prasinum by Bayesian Inference and Maximum Likelihood analyses. The uncorrected pairwise distance between the new species and other species of the genus Gonyosoma ranged from 11.78% to 17.07% calculated using the mitochondrial cytochrome b sequence. This discovery increases the number of Gonyosoma species to seven.

The genus Elaphe is a highly diverse snake group with wide distribution in Eurasia. Here, based on morphological comparisons and molecular data, we describe a new species of this genus from western Sichuan, China. Bayesian inference and maximum-likelihood analyses of two mitochondrial DNA fragments (CO1 and 12S) showed that the new taxon differs from its congeners (CO1-based p-distance ≥ 4.1%). Morphologically and ecologically, the new species can be diagnosed from other species by a combination of the following characters: 1) medium body size, < 780 mm in total length; 2) midbody dorsal scales in 23 rows generally, not keeled; 3) ventrals 169–180 and subcaudal pairs 56–63; 4) first preocular docked with frontal; 5) internasal scales approximately trapezoidal; 6) length of gap between internasals more than 3/5 that between prefrontal; 7) length of tip of snout to frontal slightly larger than length of frontal; 8) ovoviviparous. Currently, the new species is known only from the Sichuan and Shaanxi provinces in China. This new species brings the total number of species in the genus Elaphe to 18.

A new orchid species, Cymbidium yunnanensis (Orchidaceae; Epidendroideae; Cymbidieae), from Yunnan Province, China, is described and illustrated. Based on morphological and molecular analyses, we demonstrate that this new species is similar to C. floribundum, but it differs in its smaller size, leaves 5–15 cm, shorter scape, white flowers with pale purplish markings on its sepals and petals, lip with purplish red blotch, petals narrowly falcate oblong and lip midlobe nearly round with column foot 1.5–2.0 mm long. Phylogenetic analyses based on nuclear ribosomal ITS and plastid (matK, rbcL) DNA sequence data support C. yunnanensis as a new species.

A new species of terrestrial ascomycetes belonging to the genus Lonicericola (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes) found on dead branches of Caprifolioideae sp. in Yunnan Province, China is described and illustrated. A new classification is proposed to accommodate the new taxon based on the interpreted results from multigenic phylogenetic inference and micro morphological comparisons. The analysis of a combined SSU, LSU, ITS rDNA and tef1 dataset significantly supports both the shared monophyletic origin of Lonicericola in Parabambusicolaceae as well as L. fuyuanensis as a distinct new species. Comparisons of the distinct morphology of the new species L. fuyuanensis with the type species of the genus, L. hyaloseptispora, and other genera of the family Parabambusicolaceae are made.
