Dinobryon taiyuanensis (Chrysophyta, Dinobryaceae), a new freshwater species described from Shanxi province, China

A new freshwater species of Chrysophyceae, Dinobryon taiyuanensis, is described from Linde Lake in Shanxi province, China. This new species is similar to D. sertularia, the type species of the genus, in the shape of the lorica and organization of the colony. The cells have two heterokont flagella surrounded by a lorica and occurred both as free-living, solitary cells or in branched colonies. The lorica of our new species like a bent or S-shaped cone, and shorter than the lorica in D. sertularia. In addition to describing the morphological features of D. taiyuanensis, a phylogenetic analysis based on sequences of the nuclear small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA) and internal transcribed spacer (including internal transcribed spacer 1, 5.8S rDNA and internal transcribed spacer 2) placed this alga in single clade with a considerable sequence distance from the other Dinobryon species. Thus, results of both morphological comparisons and phylogenetic analysis based on molecular data suggest this alga as a new species, increasing the total number of recognized freshwater Chrysophyta species in China.

The new freshwater species of Chrysophyceae, Dinobryon ningwuensis is described from material collected from Pipahai Lake in Shanxi province, China. This new species is similar to D. sertularia, D. sociale and D. sociale var. americana in the shape of the lorica and organization of the colony. The cells have two heterokont flagella surrounded by a lorica and occurred both as free-living, solitary cells or in branched colonies. Our new species is characterized by having a cylindric lorica, wide and short, colonies are narrow and short in length. These features slightly differ D. ningwuensis from D. sertularia, D. sociale and D. sociale var. americana. In addition to describing the morphological structures of D. ningwuensis, a phylogenetic analysis based on sequences of the nuclear small subunit ribosomal DNA (SSU rDNA), internal transcribed spacer 1 (ITS1), 5.8S rDNA and the internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) placed this alga in single clade with a considerable sequence distance from the other Dinobryon species. Thus, results of both morphological comparisons and phylogenetic analysis based on molecular data suggest this alga as a new species, increasing the total number of recognized freshwater Chrysophyta species in China.

<em>Cortinarius gueneri</em> (subgen. <em>Telamonia</em> sect. <em>Laeti</em>) is described as a new species from Turkey based on morphological and molecular data. It can be recognized by the somewhat irregular conical to campanulate, translucent-striate, rusty brown pileus; pale yellowish to cinnamon brown broadly attached lamellae; pale salmon to pinkish brown stipe; narrowly amygdaloid to ellipsoid basidiospores; and its putative association with <em>Carpinus orientalis</em>. Full description of the new species is given with field photos, microscopic illustrations, and a short discussion. Phylogenetic analysis of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region is also provided.

A new species belonging to Lactarius subg. Plinthogalus was discovered during a long-term project on the diversity of Korean Lactarius. This species is proposed here as Lactarius cucurbitoides. The status of L. cucurbitoides as a new species is supported by molecular data and morphological features. Phylogenetic analysis based on internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequences shows that L. cucurbitoides is closely related to L. subplinthogalus, L. friabilis, and L. oomsisiensis, with pairwise distances of 2.8–4.3%. Morphological characters of L. cucurbitoides that distinguish it from these closely related species are a pale yellow to pale orange colored pileus and non-discoloration of white latex. The new species is described and illustrated in the present paper.

Three new species of Tricholomopsis were described and illustrated based on collections from Shanxi Province in North China. Tricholomopsis galeata sp. nov. is closely related to T. pteridiicola but distinguished from the latter by its large pileus with red to purple reddish fibrous scales and the absence of pleurocystidia. Tricholomopsis pallidolutea sp. nov. is similar to T. sulfureoides and T. flavescens in macromorphology but is differentiated from T. sulfureoides by its dark orange fibrous scales on the pileal surface and narrow basidiospores (avQ = 1.77 ± 0.33), and from T. flavescens by its abundant pleurocystidia. Tricholomopsis mitirubicunda sp. nov. is morphologically similar to T. rutilans but is distinguished from the latter by its abundant pleurocystidia. Phylogenetic analysis supported the taxonomic position of the three new species in the genus Tricholomopsis.

Two new species of Dentipellis are described from China based on morphological characteristics and molecular data. Dentipellis longiuscula is characterized by annual, resupinate hydnoid basidiomata with moderately long spines, rough basidiospores (5–6 × 3–3.6 µm) and absence of gloeoplerous hyphae and gloeocystidia. Dentipellis tropicalis is characterized by hydnoid basidiomata with numerous gloeocystidia presenting in hymenium, and minutely rough basidiospores (5–5.5 × 2.5–3.2 µm). Phylogenetic analysis based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and nuclear large subunit ribosomal (nLSU) RNA gene regions confirmed the affinity of the new species in Dentipellis and indicated their relationships with other species in the genus.

Hohenbuehelia odorata sp.nov. is described based on morphological and molecular data of the nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (nrITS) region from Kerala State, India. The macro- and micromorphological features in conjunction with nrITS-based phylogenetic analysis performed using Maximum Likelihood (ML) method supported the novelty of H. odorata. Complete morphological descriptions, photographs and comparisons with similar species and a key to the Indian species of Hohenbuehelia are provided.

A new freshwater alga species of Ulvella shanxiensis, is found in the circulating neutral water spring in China (Shanxi Province), growing epilithic and epiphytic on other substrates. This new species is characterized by olive-green, disc-shaped hollow thallus with irregularly vesicular morphology, which composed of 2–3 layers cells. Most characteristics were in agreement with Ulvella, but distinguished from the other freshwater members by thalli dimensions and cell diameter. In addition to describing the morphological structures of U. shanxiensis in detail, phylogenetic analysis based on sequences of the rbcL and 18S rDNA gene placed the algae in single clade with two samples, and demonstrated the separation between U. shanxiensis and other Ulvella species with a considerable sequence distance. Comparing with U. bullata, the internal transcribed spacer secondary structure of the new species has some compensatory base changes in 1 Helix and hemi-CBCs in 2–3 Helix, differed in several ways from that of other Ulvella algae. Consequently, these results of morphological observation and phylogenetic analysis suggest this alga as a new species, and bring a new record in the total number of recognized freshwater Ulvella species in China.

Based on phylogenetic studies, the Inonotus linteus complex has been recently divided into two genera, Sanghuangporus and Tropicoporus. During investigations on the species diversity of the Inonotus linteus complex from China, a new species, Sanghuangporus quercicola sp. nov., is described based on morphological and molecular data. Morphologically, it is characterized by perennial, pileate basidiomata, a heterogeneous hyphal system with monomitic in context and dimitic in trama, and broadly subglobose to ovoid, thick-walled basidiospores measuring as 3–3.9 × 2.4–2.8 μm. Phylogenetically, the status of S. quercicola is strongly supported based on sequences of the nuclear internal transcribed spacer (ITS) regions.

A new species of freshwater red alga, Sheathia matouensis, is described and illustrated based on material collected in spring water from the Hongdong region of Shanxi province, China. Phylogenetic analysis of sequence data from the rbcL and psbA indicated the separation between S. matouensis and the other species of genus Sheathia. Additionally, from a morphological point of view, S. matouensis differs from other species of the genus Sheathia by the smaller whorls and carpogonium. Therefore, the results based on both morphological observation and molecular evidences facilitated the proposal of this new species - S. matouensis. It represents another species in the freshwater red algal diversity in China and the description of this new species provides more molecular data for phylogenetic analysis of genus Sheathia.

Abstract The systematics and taxonomy of the broadly distributed bats of the genus Cynomops has changed considerably in the last few years. Among the major changes, Cynomops abrasus was split into two species of large-bodied forms (Cynomops mastivus and C. abrasus) distributed east of the Andes. However, large Colombian specimens identified as C. abrasus from the western side of the Andes had yet to be included in any revisionary work. Phylogenetic analysis performed in this study, using mtDNA sequences (Cytochrome-b), revealed that these Colombian individuals are more closely related to Cynomops greenhalli. Morphological and molecular data allowed us to recognize populations from western Colombia, western Ecuador and northwestern Peru, as members of a new species of Cynomops. Characters that allow for its differentiation from C. greenhalli include a larger forearm, paler but more uniform ventral pelage, more globular braincase, and well-developed zygomatic processes of the maxilla (almost reaching the postorbital constriction). This study serves as another example of the importance of including multiple lines of evidence in the recognition of a new species. Given its rarity and the advanced transformation of its habitat, this new species is particularly important from a conservation perspective.
