A catalog of the type material of 59 taxa of Neotropical Pierinae housed in the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC, is presented. Each entry includes the species-group name, the original combination quoted from the original publication, the type locality, the type specimens with their labels, and notes about current taxonomic status. One new synonym has been established, Euterpe dysoni Doubleday, 1847 = Leodonta marginata Schaus, 1902. Lectotypes are designated for 5 species group taxa: Archonias intermedia Schaus, 1913, Hesperocharis jaliscana Schaus, 1898, H. paranensis Schaus, 1898, Pieris sublineata Schaus, 1902, and P. limona Schaus, 1913.

The Stability

A catalog of types of Neotropical Pierinae at the Department of Entomology, Natural History Museum, London, is presented. The collection contains type material of 324 taxa (296 represented by primary types). Each entry includes the species-group name, followed by the generic name, original combination quoted from the original publication, type locality, type specimens as specified with their labels, and notes about current taxonomic status. To increase the stability of nomenclature, and to fix the identity of several species-group names, lectotypes are designated for 116 taxa.

This paper comprises a catalogue of the type material of true butterflies (Papilionoidea) kept in the National Museum of Natural History at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences in Sofia. The collection contains types of nine nominal species group taxa, described by S. Abadjiev, S. Beshkov, I. Buresch, H. Rebel, and K. Tuleschkow. Lectotypes have been designated for Colias myrmidone balcanica Rebel, 1901, Erebia tyndarus macedonica Buresch, 1919, E. gorge pirinica Buresch, 1919, Euchloe gruneri macedonica Buresch, 1921, Sathyrus [sic] arethusa strumata Buresch, 1919, and Doritis apollinus var. thracica Buresch, 1915. One new synonym has been established: Papilio arethusa arethusa [Denis et Schiffermüller], 1775 = Sathyrus [sic] arethusa strumata Buresch, 1919, syn. nov.

The collection of the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., is second only to that of The Natural History Museum (formerly British Museum of Natural History), London, in the number of type specimens of the superfamily Gelechioidea (Lepidoptera). The Smithsonian houses 1,375 gelechioid types: 1,249 holotypes, 48 lectotypes, 1 neotype, 69 species represented by one or more syntypes, and 8 species represented by one or more pseudotypes (i.e., specimens identified as type by an accompanying label that are unlikely to be the type). Three former curators are responsible for the vast majority of the type specimens: August Busck, J. F. Gates Clarke, and Ronald W. Hodges. We present a list of the species for which a type is deposited in the USNM, organized alphabetically. For each species we provide an abbreviated reference to the original description and label data. This list represents the second contribution to a larger effort to make available information on the Lepidoptera type holdings of the USNM.

The type material of Caudofoveata (Aplacophora) deposited in the molluscan collections of the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution (USNM), and of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University (MCZ), USA, are listed. An extensive analysis of the databases and a curatorial revision of all lots from both collections were made, including an examination of material from Dr. Amelie Scheltema’s personal collections, recently donated and under curation in the MCZ. A total of 2313 specimens from 378 type lots representing 33 nominal species group taxa was found. Of these, 2275 specimens from 358 lots representing 27 species are held in the USNM (22 holotypes, 2 syntypes and 334 paratypes) and 38 specimens from 20 lots representing 7 species are in the MCZ (5 syntypes, 9 paratypes, 3 paralectotypes, 3 doubtful paralectotypes). Some taxonomical notes about these species and their type-materials are provided.

First Report

The following four species from Jiangxi Province are new to science: Homoneura (Homoneura) jiangxiensis sp. nov., H. (H.) martini sp. nov., H. (H.) pangae sp. nov. and H. (H.) stepheni sp. nov.. For each species, a diagnosis and description are provided, along with photographs of the habitus and certain characters, and figures of male genitalia. These species belong to the Homoneura (Homoneura) henanensis group (Diptera: Lauxaniidae: Homoneurinae). A key to the species of this species group is presented. This represents the first report of the genus Homoneura for Jiangxi Province. All type specimens for the new species are deposited in the Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History, Washington D.C., USA (USNM).

I he National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institution), Department 01 Paleobiology, recently received the collection of invertebrate fossils (except Insecta and Patagonia material) formerly housed in the Princeton University, Department of Geological and Geophysical Sciences. This fine collection contains approximately 70,000 specimens; type and nontype specimens were stored together in taxonomic order. Current documentation for the entire collection consists of a card catalogue. Following curation, the specimens will be housed taxonomically in standing type and nontype collections. Lists of type specimens received will be published as they are isolated. Borrowers should return specimens to the Department of Paleobiology, National Museum of Natural History, upon completion of loans.

This paper presents redescriptions of amphipods in the genus Metopa (Stenothoidae) in the type-collections of the United States National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. Typeand paratype-material is used for Metopa spinicoxa and M. stelleri. The material used for M. dawsoni is from a station very close to the type locality, and identified by Barnard, who is the author of the species. We have used material from the Albatross expedition in 1906, identified by Shoemaker, for M. cristata and M. majuscula, both originally described by Gurjanova. All species are redescribed using line drawings, and comparisons with the original texts and figures.Key words:
