From a survey of the interstitial fauna at Giglio, Italy, the new species Symsagittifera smaragdina sp. nov., (Sagittiferidae) is described. We herein transfer the genus Praesagittifera and its three species P. gracilis (Yamasu, 1982), P. naikaiensis (Yamasu, 1982), and P. shikoki Kostenko & Mamkaev, 1990 to the family Convolutidae. In addition the diagnosis for the family Sagittiferidae is revised to include only those species possessing sagittocysts in adult specimens.

A representative of the genus Hemiasterella Carter, 1879 was found for the first time in the Mediterranean Sea during sampling in the shallow waters of the northern Aegean Sea. The new species, H. aristoteliana, is compared with Atlantic Hemiasterella elongata Topsent, 1928. The status of the family Hemiasterellidae is discussed.

Abstract Helminthological examinations of the red mullet Mullus barbatus (Linnaeus) (Mullidae) from the Gulf of Hammamet, off Tunisia, revealed the presence of one undescribed gonad-infecting nematode species, Philometra barbata n. sp. (Philometridae). The new species as other congeneric species is mainly characterized by the shape of the caudal mound, the distribution of the caudal papillae and the shape of the gubernaculum with the presence of a dorsal protuberance consisting of two dorsolateral lamellar parts separated from each other by a smooth median field in the male. The new species differs from its gonadinfecting congeners in the body length of male, the length of spicules and gubernaculum. This is the second nominal species of Philometra reported from fishes of the family Mullidae and the 14th from the Mediterranean Sea.

A new species of Chone (Sabellidae) from the coast of Ustica Island (Mediterranean Sea, north of Sicily) is described. The species, named Chone usticensis sp. nov., is similar to another Mediterranean species, C. filicaudata, in having a long pygidial filiform appendage, but is distinct from this species especially in the peristomium, collar, and in thoracic paleate chaetae shape. A discussion on the presence of the radiolar appendages within the genus Chone is also given.

A new amphipod crustacean, Liljeborgia clytaemnestra sp. nov., is described based on specimens from Malta andthe Bay of Naples. It is quite similar to the sympatric L. dellavallei Stebbing, 1906, but it has narrower and moreregular-sized spines on the propodus of pereiopods 3–4. The longest spine on the dorsolateral border of the pedun-cle of uropod 1 is not strongly elongate in adult males, as in L. dellavallei. The apical spines on the lobes of the tel-son are much longer than in L. dellavallei. L. clytaemnestra sp. nov. is actually more similar to two northeasternAtlantic species, the British L. pallida (Spence Bate, 1857) and the Scandinavian L. brevicornis (Bruzelius, 1859)than to the Mediterranean L. dellavallei. In L. clytaemnestra sp. nov., article 2 of the mandibular palp has setae ondistal third, whilst setae are restricted to tip in the two other species. Article 3 of the mandibular palp is also longerin L. clytaemnestra sp. nov. than in the two Atlantic species. The spines of the outer plate of the maxilliped are lon-ger in L. clytaemnestra sp. nov. than in the two other species. The most distal spine of the propodus of pereiopods3–4 is reduced in L. clytaemnestra sp. nov. and L. brevicornis, but not in L. pallida. The serration of the posteriorborder of the basis of pereiopod 7 is much stronger in L. clytaemnestra sp. nov. than in the two other species.Finally, in L. clytaemnestra sp. nov., the spines of the lobes of the telson are longer than in L. pallida. A lectotypeis designated for L. dellavallei. The presence/absence of a posterodorsal tooth on pleonite 3 in L. dellavallei is dis-cussed. The validity of L. kinahani (Spence Bate, 1862) is questioned. An identification key is proposed for Mediterranean Liljeborgia species.

Two new amphipod species of the family Bogidiellidae were found in the hyporheal of two small rivers on Corsica. Both new species, Bogidiella (Bogidiella) cyrnensis n. sp. and B. paolii n. sp. (provisionally placed in the subgenus Medigidiella, but a definitive classification will have to wait till males are found), encountered at altitudes of 135 m and 750 m, respectively, show more affinities with certain freshwater species of Sardinia than with marine species of the Mediterranean.

Three new species of the boring genus Aka, A. coralliirubri, A. microterebrans and A. ruetzleri are described respectively from the Mediterranean Sea, Celebes Sea and Caribbean Sea. The Indo-Pacific A. maldiviensis, known only for the structure of its epilithic fistules, is here described in more detail. The new species confirm that the sponges comprising the genus Aka are able to bore in biogenic substrata only, in particular coral rock, bivalve shells and the scleraxis of the precious coral Corallium. The study of the macroscopic excavation shows that three different patterns can be described: producing discrete boring chambers, large undivided cavities and interconnecting microtunnels giving rise to a spongious aspect of the substratum.
